best shampoo for teen with sleek/greasy hair

DD is a teen and her hair gets greasy 2 -3 days after washing. She has shoulder length sleek and straight hair.

I have 3c curls which are dry and frizzy. Sleek and greasy hair is a whole new world to me. I never imaged sleek hair to be difficult but here I am.

Any recommendations for shampoo? I cannot seem to be able to find shampoo for greasy hair on the shelves. Help!

I would have thought that most people's hair is greasy 3 days after washing.
I wouldn't call that greasy if she can go that long between washes.

sulphate free shampoo.

chocolateiamydrug · 17/03/2018 07:15

thanks. will give some of those a try.

Hair is still ok on day 2 but needs washing on day 3 (which we do). was wondering if a good shampoo could give us an extra day. DD has complex SN which doesn't make washing hair that easy but seems regular washes are really the only way forward. thanks all.

If I wash my hair every day then it's a lank greasy mess by 7pm in the evening that same day and is an absolute horror by next morning and the idea of not washing it is repulsive. However, if I resist the temptation to get lathering and live with the horrible grease for one day, it starts to improve. If for reasons of travelling or whatever I end up washing my hair too soon after only 24 hrs since the last wash it looks awful again 24 hrs later and takes a few days for the improved pattern to return.

My granny taught me the scalp massage. She was shocked at the waste of water when I claimed I needed to wash my hair every day and she did a proper scalp massage shampoo then and there, and the results were amazing in that my hair stayed ungreasy for the longest it ever had before or since.

Obviously there are numerous types of hair and I can't claim this method is infallible but I know there are plenty of people who think they have to wash their hair every day but who would realise that they are wrong if they tried this.

I think it does also help that I have my hair long and I twist up in a clip. I think hair that is loose and can move around can get greasier quicker and will also look worse with only a small amount of grease as it begins to come back. The other advantage of a long hairstyle with hair of this type is that you can restrict applying conditioner to only the tips of the hair and can keep the conditioner away from the scalp. The hair nearer the scalp doesn't need conditioner, and conditioner on the scalp will make the greasiness worse too.

Snozzle
my hair is never greasy. I wash once every week and my hair gets frizzier between washes. not all hair types go greasy.

I know. You're very lucky to only have to wash once a week.
Only time mine would go that long was when I was pregnant.

I have pretty oily hair which could do with washing daily. However, I don't have time for that so do it every second day. On the second day I do find it's a bit oily (a little dry shampoo before going to bed helps a little) and certainly if I had something on that day I'd have to get it washed. With regards to shampoo, I have found that if I use a gentle daily one, then I definitely have to wash every day. So I avoid those. I use ones that are translucent rather than creamy ones. They clean better. I also mix up what I'm using. I always have 2/3 shampoos in the shower at any one time. If I use a full bottle till it's gone then my hair is definitely not as fresh, but if I switch it up every 2-3 washes then my hair looks better for it.

Based on your dd’s sn I would try and get an extra day with dry shampoo
Wilko do their own brands for £1

And alberto balsam apple is good for greasy roots without over stripping

^It is NOT true that greasy hair needs washing daily. Daily washing makes the problem worse as it will stimulate grease production.

Washing every 2-3 days is best practice for greasy hair and there is no shampoo in the world that will "last longer" to stretch this to more^

You really need to impart this advice to the British Hairdressing Council because that is not what they are currently teaching hairdressers. Friction can over-stimulate oil production, so if you have an oily scalp, you shouldn't use friction when washing the hair. Over drying the scalp can cause the sebaceous glands to over compensate but washing oily hair once a day with a decent, non harsh shampoo will not over dry an oily scalp.

The skin on your head is not much different to the skin on your face. Would you advise a teen with oily skin to not wash their face every day?

Once the hair starts looking oily or becomes uncomfortable, it should be washed, whether this is daily or weekly.

Elvive Extraordinary Clay Shampoo & a small amount of the Conditioner just on the ends not on the scalp worked wonders for mine

witherwings · 17/03/2018 09:45

Zombie mama, I was just coming in to say the exact same. I use L’Oréal Elvive extraordinary clay shampoo and conditioner and it’s the best I’ve ever found. I’ve tried all sorts and took me years to find this. My hairdresser suggested it as it was originally designed for salon use. With long hair, I would suggest using conditioner only on the ends. I wash my hair every other day.

witherwings · 17/03/2018 09:46

L’Oréal elvive in the green bottles

Thought of another couple of things while washing my hair this morning. Never rinse greasy hair with cold water, and never wash it in the bath - both will make it more greasy.
These may not apply to all oily hair - but I received these tips from other greasy hair sufferers when I was a teen and they make a big difference for me.

defineme · 19/03/2018 11:01

Dd has similar hair and use Tgel shampoo for greasy hair (never conditions) with batiste dry shampoo in-between, this adds an extra day at least.

Ladiesfirst · 19/03/2018 21:16

I have had greasy hair since I was ten and have washed almost every day since. I have lots and lots of slightly wavy but fine hair which is super shiny but turn it a Matt pancake but the End of lost days. I discovered Rausch shampoo in Switzerland’s and it’s transformative - there is a gentle shampoo for fine hair which they also recommend
For babies so it’s auper mild smells lovely and works a treat. For extra deep cleansing they have a greasy hair line - dark green seaweed shampoo - again very gentle gives loads of volume but my hair can survive nearly two days with a quick puff of dry shampoo and and ponytail!

thiskittenbarks · 19/03/2018 23:10

@Ladiesfirst I like the sound of that shampoo - where can you buy it in the UK? (Annoyingly my DP just got back from Switzerland yesterday!)

Ladiesfirst · 20/03/2018 06:16

I am afraid I have never tried to track it down here as buy supplies when I am over there for work but the internet must have some
