Having the chutzpah to cut your hair short is brave and therefore the antithesis of what is rudely dismissed as mummish

All this talk of I want to go shorter but I'm afraid it's a mum cut.

Argh.

I'm in my late forties with hair 3 inches past my shoulders and I want to go short but my teenage daughter is begging me not to. Confused

Reluctantly - I love Robin Wrights haircut in House of Cards. I've always said if I go short I would love her hair. I think she is a great example of looking far better and actually younger with short hair. (she's the main reason I watch house of cards to be honest! )

Meant to add this pic as well. I love her! Smile

None of these represent the hairstyle that is referred to as a mum bob. You can tell the difference between a well-cut bob or pixie cut with a fringe and someone who has just lost patience and lopped it short into a style that they don't even like, but think is practical.

Mine is similar to this, but dark brown/grey. Looks a bit more middle aged on me though!

Yes people she totally inspired me!
I'm more ash blonde though and the down side is more regular trips to the hairdresser so more £££s Hmm

PencilledIn · 11/03/2018 22:18

Robin Wright's hair really suits her.

@peoplearepeople I often think this! I was always down the hairdressers clutching the latest hair magazine to try out a new style and then into Boots for a pot of Country Born hair gel to style it.

Go for it Op, it'll always grow out. The liberation of a long to short cut is amazing.

I’ve had short spikyish hair for about 30 years. Long hair never suited me and I hated the feeling of it on my neck. It was naturally dark brown with various reddy tints, but when I turned 50 I dyed it white blonde. Love it - definitely makes a statement. I flatter myself it’s a bit like Roxette.

Liz Hurley has longish space between nose and lip.

MaudlinMews · 12/03/2018 07:32

PencilledIn they tend to have lip lift surgery like this.

The actress Elizabeth Debicki has awesome short hair in "The Night Manager" mini-series.

SenecaFalls · 12/03/2018 14:21

The problem with short hair it seems to me is having no discernible style.

I think this is just as true, or more so, for long hair, especially if it has been straightened to within an inch of its life, which is what I see on so many women day after day.

TheHoundsofLove · 12/03/2018 16:09

Unless you are the sort of rare being who has naturally very beautiful long hair (I don't!), I truly think that the right short cut is almost always more flattering and stylish. The few people I know that have gone short all look fab and it has, without exception, made them look younger and more funky.

fishonabicycle · 12/03/2018 18:01

I love short hair but mine is thick, wavy, unruly and has a weird link at the front, so is really hard work when short.

PencilledIn · 12/03/2018 19:38

I'd love that surgery! Mine is more pronounced than the 'before' picture

I have just grown out my pixie cut. When I had it I hated it but it wasnt cut very well. My hairdresser was terrible Sad she was pricey too!

Looking at those above photos makes me want to go and give it another try - they are so gorgeous but I was desperate to grow it and now I finally have a bob which was only cut last Wednesday!

I have a small round face with high cheek bones and dimples - long hair looks swampy on me so my hair is better off staying short ish.

Problem is my hair is wavy so I had hair like Pablo Escobar whilst growing it out been watching Narcos
