Do you not get shampoo 'for greasy hair' any more?

11 yo dd's hair can get a bit greasy. I was picking up a shampoo for her and tried looking for one 'for greasy hair' but there wasn't one in the whole mega-mart aisle of shampoo.

Was it never a thing?

Is it called something different now? There were a boggling number of different hair types I could have chosen, but none that obviously translated as greasy.

I'm rubbish with this sort of thing. What should I advise her? She has fairly fine, shoulder length hair. The hairs are fine but there are a lot of them iyswim - so thick hair made of thin hairs. She swims 7 times a week and I think sometimes rinses after a swim rather than shampooing every time, so it's not being shampooed every day. Should it be? I would have thought all that chlorine would have made dry hair rather than greasy.

She should also be rinsing her hair before getting into the chlorine so the hair shaft doesn't absorb much of it.

I see shampoos for 'oily' or 'normal to oily' hair, but only usually in cheaper brands. You could look for a 'clarifying' shampoo but the sort of shampoo you're after just strips the hair shaft of all natural oils which means the oil gland is confused and keeps producing more - making the hair more oily over time.

She could try a dry shampoo spray to absorb excess oil between washes and try to extend a shampoo out to every two days then three days etc.

You could also try to avoid shampoos that look very thick and creamy, that have labels like 'moisturising' etc as they will weigh the hair down, and same with ultra moisturising conditioners.

Otherwise, take her to a very good hairdresser and ask for advice on hair products and care.

Sorry can't recommend a shampoo but I went through this. I have greasy fine hair but thick. As a child I was swimming mad and swam at least once a day later competing.
My mum wouldn't let me wash my hair more than once a week. In any photos I have flat greasy hair, which I hated. Left home at 16 first thing I did was wash my hair every day. In my 50's now still wash my hair every day. Top hairdressers are now saying people with greasy hair need to wash it every day.
People do comment in my hair. My dad always says you're so lucky to have such gorgeous hair. No I'm not lucky I just wash it so it's clean and looks nice. Friends / colleagues comment on how nice my hair is and what do I do when I say wash it every day I get lectured on how bad that is. But it isn't if you have greasy hair. Dry shampoo is just talc. Clogs up scalp causes dandruff.
Sorry for length of this but my god I hated not being allowed to wash my hair as a child and as this rant shows it clearly made me ocd about hair.
So please let your daughter wash her hair every day to clean out the chlorine and keep her scalp clean. Daily washing means you can just use any mild shampoo. Just avoid conditioners unless at these ends and shampoos for dry hair which will be too heavy.
Hope your DD enjoys swimming and never ever has greasy hair days.
What a rant! Really struck home I'm afraid😯

SandLand · 10/03/2018 05:15

Has she tried a sports or swim shampoo?

HamishTheTalkingCactus · 10/03/2018 05:38

I have similar hair problems, I've found a few brands useful: Aussie Mega Shampoo, Tresemme Deep Cleanse or Alberto Balsam Apple. Or just washing with any shampoo every day tbh.

Kejdd · 10/03/2018 05:41

I didn't mean to imply you're not letting your DD wash her hair!
Also tomato sauce is known to neutralise green tint in hair if she ever gets a chlorine build up.
Hope your daughter goes on to compete if she continues to love swimming.

norbert23 · 10/03/2018 05:57

I get this and also just wash every day, I use lush "I love juicy" shampoo which helps. They'll give you s sample if you pop in x

Pleasebeafleabite · 10/03/2018 06:06

I’ve just started using the alberto balsam apple as my hair is going through a greasy spell. Really impressed with it for 99p it cleanses well but doesn’t overstrip my hair

Flamingoose · 10/03/2018 06:11

Thank you for all these replies! Thanks Pasta, I avoid the 'for dry hair'. Good advice.

Kejjd - I'm sorry you went through that. Good for you for speaking up and making sure another little girl doesn't potentially go through the same. In dd's case it's definitely not me stopping her from washing her hair. More a combination of lack of time (especially at before-school training sessions) and a bit of 11yo lackadaisical approach to hair care! She still has a streak of soap-dodger in her. I'm hoping this will change at some point!

Sandland - good idea to look for swimming or sport shampoos. Hadn't thought of that.

Hamish - I'll look for those brands (although 'm sure I found Aussie made my hair very heavy and limp. Maybe I'm remembering wrong)

Norbert - she LOVES lush. Brilliant idea. Might send dh to the one near his office to pick something up.

Swimming cap?

Flamingoose · 10/03/2018 06:11

2 votes for alberto balsam apple. I'll see if I can get it here. (Not in UK)

OP posts:
Flamingoose · 10/03/2018 06:13

She does wear a cap (no choice for swim training).

Funnily enough her hair doesnt go green despite the hours she spends in the pool. She is blonde, but a warm honey tone. I'm a more ashy blonde and used to go very green. I wondered if chlorine had changed since we were kids or something.

Alberto balsalm tea tree! Works great on greasy hair and only £1!

Foobarjar · 10/03/2018 06:18

I've tried the apple one and tea tree works miles better for me, heck only £2 investment and you can try both if you can find it

MustBeThursday · 10/03/2018 06:25

Another vote for Alberto balsam, but as you can't find that have you tried a swim/gym shampoo? Places like boots or equivalent usually have them.

When I was younger, the garnier Fructis range had a good one for greasy roots that didn't weigh the rest of my hair down - greasy roots or some such description on it. My hair was also fine but lots of it.

Danglingmod · 10/03/2018 06:49

My teen ds has v greasy hair and any own brand apple or tea tree shampoos work well for him. I can always tell when he's used any of my more expensive shampoos as his hair is not as clean.

KathyBeale · 10/03/2018 06:57

My son swims and after a lot of research I discovered a Paul Mitchell shampoo for chlorine which is brilliant. It’s expensive but it lasts for ages.

Hamsterian · 10/03/2018 07:57

Definitely wash hair with shampoo after every swim session. Just water isn’t enough to rinse the chlorine and chlorine makes hair feel tacky to the touch once it’s dry.
I too recommend Alberto Balsam.

ElspethFlashman · 10/03/2018 08:48

Sorry but the AB apple one did damn all fof me. Must try thr tea tree one.

After 40 years of greasy hair, I have to reluctantly concede there is no wonder shampoo. You just have to wash it loads and loads. Its exhausting and I've always hated it but its unavoidable no matter what you use.

Same here. Has to be washed every day and you might as well just buy cheap shampoos, I use Alberto Balsam and Lidl.

I'm assuming it might dry out a bit when I hit menopause.

BothersomeCrow · 10/03/2018 09:00

'for frequent use' - and another Alberto Balsam fan. I prefer their apple or coconut to much more expensive brands, and the conditioner is good for after swimming, too.

leeloo1 · 10/03/2018 09:24

Having searched through my kids' swimming bags, these work well for us. I've found washing their hair with a 'non swimming' shampoo doesn't effectively deal with the chlorine at all.

Do you not get shampoo 'for greasy hair' any more?
Flamingoose · 10/03/2018 09:46

Thank you for doing that Leeloo. I'll keep an eye out for something similar.

Lots of helpful suggestions here but when my hair went through a greasy spell when pregnant, I used vosene (it's in a green bottle and is normally with all the anti dandruff shampoo) and it worked wonders

MrsPear · 10/03/2018 11:12

Alberto Basan apple here too

Plus head and shoulders citrus

Chewbecca · 10/03/2018 11:32

Head and shoulders lemon for greasy hair has been pretty effective for DS.
