If you've had short hair did you like it?

Because I'm thinking of getting my hair cut short, as in like Sienna Miller style when she had it really short (and my hair is similar texture/colour.)

Did you regret it? Was it hard work because it kept growing out too quick?

Experiences would be great please!

I really enjoyed having short, very blonde hair when I was 19 HOWEVER it was really hard to maintain, in part because roots look bigger when your hair is shorter — I guess because its a bigger proportion of it? Also I wasn't prepared for a lot of people assuming I was gay. Things might have progressed a bit by now as this was 9 years ago or this might not matter to you, but at the time for me as a single straight woman looking for a bf it wasn't ideal.

CountFosco · 07/03/2018 21:29

I've got short hair, it has been in a short pixie for about a year now (about 1" long), before that it was a bob for a few years and before that it had been short for about 5 years. I really love mine short, I'm nearly 50 and when my hair is longer it kind of drags down my face. I still look young and elfin when it's short. It also hides the small amount of grey I have in comparison to having longer hair, my hair is its natural colour and I think that looks good short as well. If you are going for Sienna Miller length then I think obvious dark roots fit in with that style. If you are covering grey then cutting it short is a good way to get rid of the colour.

TheQueenOfWands · 07/03/2018 21:32

I'd like short hair but have a dowager's hump and am self-conscious enough to need it covered.

I only wear my hair up if I have a collar or a hood.

somersetsinger · 07/03/2018 21:35

I had very short hair in my late teenage/early twenties. I didn't mind the regular trims while it was short, I quite liked having it that length and I wouldn't rule out doing it again. It was very quick and easy to look after.

However, when I wanted to grow it out, that took a long time and looked awkward at various stages. And as noted by a previous poster, some people assumed I was gay.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 07/03/2018 21:37

People have always assumed I am gay, short hair or not, it must be some sort of signal I give off (for the record I'm not gay)

I enjoyed having short hair but found it more work than longer hair, regular hair appointments and I had to style it everyday. Now if I get up late or go camping etc I can just tie it back and get on with the day.

FireandBrimstone · 07/03/2018 21:49

I've had very short hair since I was about 10. I tried growing it once, it took ages to get even close to my chin and I felt like it was just hanging there like two spaniels ears so had to get rid.
Nobody has ever said they think I'm gay.

MeadowHay · 07/03/2018 21:57

I've had very short hair twice, once for a couple of years in my teens and then again for a year or so in early twenties. I loved both, the only pain was when it was awkward when I was growing it out again but then I hardly ever do anything with my hair. It suits me, low-maintenance and doesn't get in the way etc.

Diamonddealeroncemore · 07/03/2018 22:08

My hair is pixie short, I’ve grown it into a bob a few times in my adult life but always end up having it cut short again. I have a long narrow face so longer hair just makes my face look even longer. Short elfin hair and a fringe kind of balances out my face because I can spike my hair up with product. It does need a regular trim though. I’m 57 and the grey is starting to show through but I think it’s easier with short hair.

Thiswayorthatway · 07/03/2018 22:15

Short hair makes my nose look big (which it is to be honest). 🤥

Feawen · 08/03/2018 09:15

I have had a short asymmetric bob and now have a pixie. Mine is very short at the back but with a side fringe. I like both cuts, but the pixie is more versatile in terms of styling.

I've had so many compliments on my hair since I chopped it off.

Frakka · 08/03/2018 09:20

I’ve had a pixie crop quite a few times and love it. My hair does grow quickly though, which is annoying because of getting it cut frequently, but also good because I know when I get bored of it I can grow it out again pretty quickly (about a year from pixie to shoulder length).

However, last time I cut it short I looked in the mirror and saw my mother (who always had short hair) and so I won’t be doing that again!

confuzzled42 · 08/03/2018 09:24

I have v short hair, in honesty because I’m allergic to all hair dye and don’t like long grey hair. I love it. I get it trimmed back into shape every 5-6 weeks and it looks after itself. DH loves it, I love it, I don’t really care about anyone else. I have though, been referred to as Sir on more than one occasion Hmm. I really do not look masculine!

SueGeneris · 08/03/2018 09:24

I had the same experience as Frakka- although I'd had a short cut aged 21 and loved It, when I tried it again in my late 30s it looked terrible. It looked like 'mum hair' for want of a better phrase (I am one after all!) - very plain and my face looked too big. Just awful. Maybe it was the wrong cut.

BootyO · 08/03/2018 09:38

It’s 2018 so I would look for more modern influences ie women currently rockin a short style.

I have very short hair and my main influences are Michelle Williams and Halsey.

Keep it non-“Mumsy” with something edgy. A pastel tint in the blonde or very short sides etc

redmarkone · 08/03/2018 09:40

i have had short hair in my late teens. i just didnt have a petite enough face and defined enough features to look pretty with it. at the time i was slightly heavier and had fatter chin line and i didnt know how to elongate my very round eyes with make up. it was just all wrong and no -one told me! think carefully about how you will style yourself and your over all look. if you dont want to end up looking dated and like you're in the land style forgot, you really need to have style/make an effort to carry this off.

redmarkone · 08/03/2018 09:41

yes, same here confuzzled, at college, the canteen staff thought i was a boy several times!

redmarkone · 08/03/2018 09:44

the thing about famous people with short hair is that they usually has beautiful sharp define jaw lines and excellent bone structure. not saying short hair wouldnt look nice on you but i'd approach with caution. my hair took a couple of years to get to a good length.

FlorenceLyons · 08/03/2018 09:48

I have a very short pixie cut and I love it. Styling it is dead easy - wash, blast briefly with hairdryer, stick a bit of wax in it. I've got quite a bit of grey coming through (I'm 44) but I actually quite like it - I think it helps break the hair up and look a bit choppy.

I get mine cut every 5 weeks. Ideally it would be a bit more frequently, but time & money means I compromise on 5 weeks! I like the sharpness of it when it's recently cut.

MrsPeacockDidIt · 08/03/2018 09:51

I have had short hair for years. And just gone even shorter. My hair is super fine and the short cut and bleach give it more volume. I couldn’t have it bleached as often if it was longer. This is my latest eat inspiration (if my first attempt at atexhing a photo works !)

redmarkone · 08/03/2018 09:56

michelle collins' face really suits that style! its a classic.

ifcatscouldtalk · 08/03/2018 10:01

It really depends on your face. I say this as someone who has tried short hair when younger, as it looked fabulous on someone else I knew.
For me it made my face look very fat and it didn't suit me.
If you have a hairdresser who you trust and value their opinion, I would ask them if that style would suit you.

AjasLipstick · 08/03/2018 10:04

I've been thinking of this too OP! Katie Holme's looks lovely with her latest short cut....she has a longer fringe. But I am 45 and I'm worried it will show up my weaker jawline......but I always wear my hair up....so....confusing!

MochaRioja · 08/03/2018 13:30

That Michelle collins hair cut is lovely 😊

My hair does grow quite quickly so one worry is going to the hairdressers all the time! I currently go about 2/3 times a year!

I loved my pixie cut and can see myself doing it again, happily. It does take a wee bit of maintenance - regular trims etc, but so darn easy to care for otherwise. I've never ever had anyone mistake me for a man, and I've no idea if anyone thought I was gay (although I probably wouldn't have noticed if they had).

It all depends on your hair texture, I guess. Mine's straight, but has a bit of a twist/bend (not enough to call a wave) , is super fine but there's lot of it, plus I'm sprinkled liberally with grey.
