Anyone else really disappointed by Phillips Lumea?

Lottapianos · 06/03/2018 22:39

I bought mine in September and have been using every 2 weeks on legs, bikini and underarms. I have been waxing every 2-3 weeks as well. I have dark hair and pale skin and have been using on the highest setting each time

I have noticed barely any change at all to underarms, and only slightly more to legs and bikini. I really expected to see significant hair loss in those areas after nearly 6 months of use. Anyone had a similar experience, and any tips or ideas? Thanks

If you are also waxing there may not be any hair in the follicle for the lumina to target.

I'm having a course at a salon and they were very clear that it's shaving only between treatments no waxing/epilator.

MrsApplepants · 06/03/2018 22:45

You need to stop waxing, it won’t work if you are waxing. Shaving only

Allthecoolkids · 06/03/2018 22:47

You can’t wax! Shaving only.

sinceyouask · 06/03/2018 22:54

I think if you're waxing and not seeing results, they suggest you switch to shaving instead. It would make sense that the lumea would be less effective on waxed than shaved skin (if I've understood how it works that is).

orangina · 06/03/2018 23:02

Stop the waxing! Shave only.....

ButteredScone · 06/03/2018 23:02

Keep the faith - it is a brilliant machine.

BzyB · 06/03/2018 23:04

Yup, as PP have said- you can’t wax during the treatments!

madeyemoodysmum · 06/03/2018 23:12

It's worked well for my lower legs. After a year I only shave once a month and it's very patchy

Under arms not so good as I'm fair and some of the hair is too light for the machine but I just wax those bits off.

I've not tried upper leg or bikini yet as it's too time consuming to do all your body. Once my lower leg completely finished I'll do those.

+1 for stopping the waxing.

I’m very, very happy with results and wished I’d found out about it years ago.

Lottapianos · 07/03/2018 08:11

The instructions say that you can shave or wax in between treatments. I have been shaving underarms and the results have been disappointing there too

I’ve had IPL in salons and at home and I’ve always been told/read that you can’t wax or pluck because the light needs to zap the root to kill it off.

sinceyouask · 07/03/2018 09:18

Their website says "Waxing can also be used as a pre-treatment. However, if waxing does not give the desired result, choose another pre-treatment method"

monkeysee100 · 07/03/2018 09:19

I have pale skin and dark hair and found it amazing! It didn't work on my top lip until I shaved. I was very reluctant to do so but it's worth shaving to get good results. I have hardly any underarm or leg hair for a year!!

Musicalstatues · 07/03/2018 09:25

I thought it needed to kill the root, and if you wax there’s no root!

I have been so impressed with mine, it’s worked incredibly well. I did notice a difference at 6 months but it probably pu took a year for the full effects. I know barely have to do anything.

Definitely stop waxing and just shave before you use it and see if that helps.

Lottapianos · 07/03/2018 09:40

Thanks for looking that up, since. I was getting very confused Confused

I'm really reluctant to go back to shaving after 10 years of waxing, but it sounds like it might be the way forward . Grrr.

I'm saving up for Lumea atm so am very interested in them!

SoupDragon · 07/03/2018 11:18

I bought the Aldi version at Christmas and I really pleased with the initial results so far. Bikini line worked brilliantly.

Titsywoo · 07/03/2018 11:25

Worked very well for me but I only shaved.

SporkInTheToaster · 07/03/2018 11:27

As previous posters are saying, you aren’t getting results because you aren’t using it properly. You need to be shaving, not removing hair at the root.

I love my Lumea.

SporkInTheToaster · 07/03/2018 11:29

I stand corrected, if the website says that waxing is a goer. I’m surprised that it does though. Kind of missing the point of the machine, surely?

MissWilmottsGhost · 07/03/2018 11:37

No, not disappointed at all, it is brilliant. It has not removed 100% of my hair, but enough so that I forget completely about hair removal for months at a time, rather than worrying about visible hair in the evening when I had shaved in the morning Hmm

I do have dark hair and pale skin though, so it supposed to work best on that. Do you have fair hair or dark skin?

If you are waxing too then the hair follicules that have the hair pulled out will not be affected by the Lumea. I used to use an epilator as well ad shaving, but changed back to just shaving when I got the Lumea. It works by zapping the dark hair shaft, no hair shaft no zap, hair grows back.

It's worked like a dream for my bikini and legs. Underarm has been less effective but I'm starting to see a difference. I don't use mine anywhere near very two weeks because I'm too lazy, but underarms are becoming more sparse and finer in about 3 treatments since Christmas.

I get razors delivered (friction free shaving) and used to get them every month. I changed it to every two months a little before Christmas (4 or 5 new heads and shaving cream) and I have a surplus of new heads and tubes of cream because I haven't had to shave as frequently. It's fab!

neonlicht · 07/03/2018 16:56

My experience with the Lumea hasn't been that great either. I've also got pale skin and dark hair and I've used it every two or three weeks after shaving for about 8 months. It definitely has an effect (hair is patchier), but there's still far too much hair not to shave and progress seems slow. Particularly in bikini area (annoying as this was my priority). I waxed here for years, whereas I always just shaved legs and armpits. I wonder if this affects the results? Perhaps because long-term waxing itself reduces hair growth/thickness so there's less pigment for the laser to target. That's my theory anyway!

Lottapianos · 07/03/2018 17:01

That's interesting neon. I waxed for about 10 years on legs and bikini line but shaved armpits. I think the results are slightly better on legs than armpits. Hair is patchier than it used to be but not a dramatic difference. I really can't face going back to shaving everything after waxing for so long
