Do you have a “uniform”?

I have realised that in recent years I have by default adopted a bit of a uniform. So when I am not at work it’s usually black or grey skinny jeans and with some sort of top - at the moment it’s usually a grey or blue cashmere jumper. For work it’s similar except it’s usually a black or grey skirt with black opaque tights. I do have various other lovely things in my wardrobe but I just find that many outfits require quite a lot of planning to avoid looking frumpy - the right shoes, the right coat , etc.

Anyone else?

I do. Usually skinny jeans, flat ankle boots (today's are tan lace-up leather ones), and a top in a solid block colour, stripes, or a black top under a check shirt. Leather jacket.

I struggle in summer. I hate pale colours and light-wash denim. And flowers.

ScreamingLevitation · 05/03/2018 14:33

Yep. We have minimal storage space so although I don't want to use the phrase 'capsule wardrobe', everything had to work with everything else and I only wear about three outfits in rotation. On the winter I wear thin thermals underneath and a bigger coat and shoes, but basically the same gear.

Dark blue jeans / trousers
White or pale colour shirt
Winter +cashmere jumper

WellTidy · 05/03/2018 14:38

At the moment, yes, because I've put on a load of weight and am struggling with what suits me.

My uniform is straight leg jeans, long sleeve layer top and a Phase Eight Becca batwing knitted top over the top. Long necklace or scarf.

I have many different colour combinations Smile

ColinsVeryJolly · 05/03/2018 15:12

Yep.

Skinny jeans, casual 3/4 sleeve top, converse.

Pretty much all the time.

elQuintoConyo · 05/03/2018 15:15

Nope. Nothing in my wardrobe really goes with anything else. I just throw all sorts together and off i go.

Hmm, not sure what i'm doing on s&b....

ElspethFlashman · 05/03/2018 15:16

Sadly I have an actual uniform at work.

Which means on days off I dress like Waynetta Slob despite having great intentions to look trendy. Sad

CapricornWithAUnicornHorn · 05/03/2018 15:30

Yes. Skinny jeans and a 'nice top' paired with a long blazer and either flat shoes (summer) Chelsea boots(winter) or heels if I'm going some place nice.

Also subconsciously started to match my sunglasses with my handbags Grin - due to eye problems which make me get migraines I definitely don't think I'm some sort of celeb

I always get compliments about how put together I look but I honestly just took the easy route and bought the same wardrobe in different colours knowing that I can grab any items and it will all match

AnaViaSalamanca · 05/03/2018 15:33

Not a uniform, but I save several formulas. Makes life much easier.

youcantelleverybody · 05/03/2018 15:36

Yep. Black Topshop skinnies with and oversized shirt or t shirt. Stan Smiths, Nike Internationalists or Gazelles. Chunky cardi or longline coat with an oversize scarf. I think it suits me and I love it. Occasionally I push the boat out and wear mid-wash ripped skinnies from River Island. In the summer I tend towards short denim shorts with a long line tee.

Even though I have a style I tend to stick to, I think my wardrobe is fairly well stocked.
I've made a promise this year to avoid 'fast fashion', for both ethical and financial reasons. So I've been investing in some new items, but they still very much fit with my 'uniform'.

Tantpoke · 05/03/2018 15:57

Yes my uniform for years was always a patterned A line skirt with plain t-shirt type tops.

Now its black skinny jeans, t shirt, jumper or cardi.

In the summer I live in my summer dresses, I love my linen and cotton summer dresses. Or denim mini skirt with t shirt.

Mercurial123 · 05/03/2018 16:07

Not really. I've moved away from skinny jeans last year and wear wide leg/ loose fitting trousers. After a decade in skinny jeans I really needed a change.

hollieberrie · 05/03/2018 16:28

Yes. Its a look i stole from an effortlessly cool ex-colleague. Tomboy chic. Sadly I don't pull it off as well as she does.

Skinny jeans / slim leg work trousers, linen t-shirt, boyfriend cardigan, converse / flat ankle boots. Long necklace.
In summer, replace jeans with tube skirt and add white plimsoll type trainers.

BestIsWest · 05/03/2018 17:03

Welltidy, where do you get your long sleeve tops? I need a few

SukiTheDog · 05/03/2018 17:06

Pretty much.

Jeans, long T and layered knit. Stretchy skirt (I’m weighty too, atm!) black opaques, long T and jumpers to cover my gut and backside (I know, I’m fooling no-one 😐) and lace up brogues.

SukiTheDog · 05/03/2018 17:08

Can I add, I KNOW we’re meant to feel happy in our skin and the ageing process comes to us all etc etc but, post menopause and HRT I’ve gone so fucking dumpy and so the uniform is a must really. When I was slim and younger, I could throw anything in and feel confident. No more. My uniform saves me having to ponder what, in my wardrobe, I can still get into.

toffee1000 · 05/03/2018 17:54

T shirt, jeans. Sometimes softer trousers as jeans aggravate my eczema after a few hours. I wear shorts in summer, which is fine for my eczema.
Occasionally socks (usually if going out and I have to stick shoes on) or slippers.
It’s only occasionally I go with something different.

StereophonicallyChallenged · 05/03/2018 18:02

I wear dresses for work, have about 20. A couple are winter only, couple summer only. The rest go with opaque in winter or flesh coloured/bare legs in summer. I am at the stage of my non enforced uniform now that I only buy when ones on its way out Blush

But more variety when not working, depends what I’m doing. I seem to have lived in jeans with jumpers or tops for months now though as I’m lazy and lardy carrying some winter weight Grin

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 05/03/2018 18:06

Also dresses. For work, some kind of dress, usually a long sleeve fit and flare or skater type effort, opaque tights and ankle boots - I have one brown pair and one grey pair. This is great from about end of September to end of April, when it all goes to bits. I have a horrible stomach area so many trousers and tops look a bit wrong on me. I like those pyjama type trousers or tapered trousers and I have ok legs but tops are often too short to cover my whole tummy area. I feel much less confident in the summer so I need a summer uniform! Luckily I'm a teacher so only need to look presentable for about 12 hot weeks a year!

BlueEyedWonder · 05/03/2018 20:14

I have 3 uniforms:
Work - cigarette pants, quirky print fitted shirts, skinny cashmere jumpers or cardigans, brogues or block heeled ankle boots

Weekend - Skinny or slim jeans, stripe top or grey sweatshirt, converse or Uggs

Out - cigarette pants, lace blouse, silk blouse, blazer, animal print heels

Judydreamsofhorses · 05/03/2018 20:38

I have several uniforms which work for work (creative field) or weekend, although the actual items of clothing tend not to cross between the two.

Shortish A-line skirt, fitted crew-neck jumper, opaque tights, Chelsea boots

Skinny jeans, blouse, Chelsea boots (may add crew neck over the top if it’s cold)

Wide-leg cropped trousers or culottes, fitted, slightly cropped jumper, or tucked in t-shirt depending on the time of year, trainers or brogues, crocheted tights underneath in winter

Midi-dress, bare legs, trainers or brogues - obviously only in summer

Midi-skirt, tucked in t-shirt or top, trainers or brogues - as above

Always red lipstick.

halfwitpicker · 05/03/2018 20:40

I've recently got a new job so in a way yes. Pencil skirt and top tucked in, or skinny black jeans with a shirt.

At weekends I'm mainly dressed as a superhero thanks to DS.

BitOutOfPractice · 05/03/2018 20:40

No. I actually don't. I enjoy having a different look every day.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/03/2018 20:41

Not quite a uniform but a couple of different 'shapes' which I adapt for work/play and the seasons.

  1. Skinny jeans with a jumper/t-shirt - rolled up in the summer. Boots, Converse, trainers or sandals according to temperature/wetness. Biker jacket or coat according to the weather. Adapted to work by swapping the jeans with skinny black trousers, and the jumper/coat with a blazer.
  2. As above but tube skirt instead of jeans - with or without tights according to weather/always with tights if for work.
  3. As above but with a full skirt, ideally in a quirky print - more often to be seen in summer, but sometimes with tights and boots in winter With looks 1,2 and 3 the top half will invariably be black, unless it's a colourful silk shirt.
  4. Bodycon-ish dress in plain colour, but essentially the same as above otherwise. I especially like this with bare legs and trainers in spring/summer; often with a denim jacket for casual, or denim shaped jacket but camo print.
joystir59 · 05/03/2018 20:46

Soft joggers and big T shirt/sweaters around the house and at work (art studio at home). Dark jeans, hippyish tops, sweaters, flat ankle boots, silk scarves when I'm out

Pistachiois50pmore · 05/03/2018 21:34

I definitely feel as though I do (black or navy skinny trousers with boxy or cashmere knit, or cropped crepe trousers with shirts, wool dress with opaques and ankle boots for work) but I started making a list of my supposedly capsule wardrobe once and it was like 12 pairs of trousers, 15 nearly identical dresses... and loads of stuff which i think of as being "the exception" but still gets worn. So no. I just have a lot of navy things from COS.
