BlueHawaii · 04/03/2018 17:05

Help- I have big feet. Size 9s that are now 9.5 post pregnancies...
I usually wear Converse but now I'm going back to work and need something a bit smarter...I don't wear high heels and I work in a media agency so I can get away with trainers some days, but I'd really like to try something a bit smarter!
Thank you for any recommendations!

Watching this with interest as I too have big feet!

I've found New Look to fit (only the wide fit 9's as they seem to come up bigger all over), some Asda ones and some Primark ones. I've heard Long Tall Sally do big sizes but never tried them. I've tried Evans in the past but have found that as I have large feet but not large legs or ankles that they tend to gape

Violetrose123 · 04/03/2018 18:48

Dorothy Perkins standard and wide fit are ok and they have a decent range

I’ve gone off New Look a bit, used to buy all my shoes from there

Agree Evans can be a bit big all over, but they do have an excellent range of larger sizes and widths

Asda ballet pumps are ok

Violetrose123 · 04/03/2018 18:49

Dorothy Perkins is currently 25% off everything

CorianderSnell · 04/03/2018 19:02

I’m a wide size 9 but won’t be much help as I live in men’s workboots!

I did find some good comfy smart shoes in Hobbs NW5 when I was last looking for smart shoes, but I don’t think they do NW5 any more and not sure about normal Hobbs line. Maybe check eBay?

Look out for Swedish brands - an independent shop gave me that tip once when I was very excited about her stocking size 9 boots - because Swedish women are taller they’re normally better at doing larger sizes. Can’t remember what brand that was though, sorry!

CorianderSnell · 04/03/2018 19:09

Depends how much you’re pushing the boat out but might be worth checking out Chie Mihara??? They always look comfortable for bigger feet. I’ve never bought any just listed after them... they go up to a 42.

Marmelised · 04/03/2018 19:10

Magnus shoes - check online

mixture · 04/03/2018 19:14

Gabor shoes - check online. A quick google threw up
something called After8shoes have no experience in that site though, it looked like an ordinary web shop.

mixture · 04/03/2018 19:15

42 is 8, or 8.5 with a stretch, so that would probably be too small for OP.

Katurah · 04/03/2018 19:17

I'm a wide 9 in most shoes but have discovered Heavenly Feet and their size 8s fit like a dream. Easily the comfiest shoes and boots I have ever owned. Prior to that I was a dr martens girl but not anymore!

BikeRunSki · 04/03/2018 19:23

After Eight (online)
Cinderella Shoes (online)
ASOS
Clark’s in some styles (online only, you’re unlikely to find them in stock in s shop).
Some Land’s End styles

Long Tall Sally have lots, the quality is a bit hit and miss.

You need to join the FB Long Tall Sally Page, this is a frequent topic of discussion!

ExpectingToFly · 04/03/2018 19:24

I always thought I was a size 8 (42) but it seems as though that's a size 9 now! Anyone else noticed?

BikeRunSki · 04/03/2018 19:25

Duckfeet - Danish, I ordered mine direct, lots of size info on the website and efficient shipping service.

Londonlivin · 04/03/2018 19:27

JCrew

CorianderSnell · 04/03/2018 19:39

@mixture - I think it varies. All shops I’ve bought shoes in have done 8-41 and 9-42 but I don’t think there’s a standard across all shops, and also seems to vary across women’s and men’s.

Obviously the fit of the brand will vary too so some 42s might be fine and others not. I buy kids shoes from Happy Little Soles sometimes which does it by cms, which seems sensible - also shows how the size varies as a 15cm shoe can be listed as three different sizes across three different brands...

BikeRunSki · 04/03/2018 20:30

Until a few years ago, 8 was fairly consistently 42 and 9 was 43, although very rare to find. In recent years it’s become 8= 41 and 9=42. I think there’s two reason’s for this

  • there is not a direct relationship between uk and European sizes
  • By calling the biggest size 9, manufacturers can pretend they make bigger shoes, even though they don’t.- biggest size as standard is still 42.

It looks like I was wrong about Lands End.

sourpatchkid · 04/03/2018 22:03

Deichman - you can shop online, loads of choice, cheap, decent quality and often go up to a size 10.

JudasPriestley · 04/03/2018 22:08

This is about the only upside of the transcult that I can think of: greater availability of big women's shoes.

As the proud owner of a pair of wide 43s, I say 'bring it on'.

steppemum · 04/03/2018 22:11

9 is not a 42. But it isn't a direct correlation, so size 10 is about 44.5 for example.

I am size 10 and I buy from Evans. They used to only have wide shoes, but now do standard and wide fittings and up to 10 (11?) in many styles.

Long Tall Sally has some very nice shoes and boots, I look out for styles in the sale, and they look nice, not cheap.

I used to buy from Brantano, but our big local one closed down, and the small alternative doesn't do large sizes in store, you have to order them in. They go up to a size 10 ladies. Not a huge number of styles.

I cannot buy on-line, I have to try shoes on, I can try on 5 pairs and only have one pair that is comfortable

CallarMorvern · 04/03/2018 22:16

Yes, I've noticed the trend in labelling a 9 as a 42 these days, it really pisses me off. Women's and men's shoes used to be consistent- a 42 was an 8 in both men's and women's, but now an 8 is sometimes a 41 in women's. I have Hush Puppies in a 9, actually my only pair of strappy heeled fancy shoes!

A pp mentioned Heavenly Feet, I have a pair of 42s that fit, I'm a wide 8, often need a 9. Birkenstocks are also very big, actually only need a 41 in them. M&S wide fit are quite good too.

DorothyL · 04/03/2018 22:16

Would also recommend Deichmann

BlueHawaii · 04/03/2018 22:47

Great idea on the Nordic brands, thank you!! Will try all the suggestions. Lk Bennett I think do bigger sizes though price wise is pretty much out of my budget!
I also have narrow and flat feet-sigh.

I've recently discovered Zalando have a huge collection of size 9 footwear. ASOS also do size 9 and some styles from Clarks come in a 9.

mixture · 05/03/2018 05:17

The size of the shoe, when shopping online, is quite difficult to handle. A continental 42 is equivalent to 27 centimetres (the Japanese measurement seems to be 26 however), and to 7.5 Barleycorn UK standard, 8.5 US male shoe, or 10 US female shoe, according to one table, but another site lists 42 as a UK 8 and a US 9, a third site says it's 8.5 UK and 9.5 US, also measured as10 3/4 inch. Yet another table says 42 is equivalent to UK 9.5 and US 11.5 or 10.69'' or 27.1 centimetres for women, but for men's shoes it's UK 8.5 and US 9 and only 26 centimetres. Still the web shops haven't been able to handle all of this in any efficient way at all, so shopping online is a gamble (unless one goes with one make, such as Gabor, and is fully familiar with its sizes).

mixture · 05/03/2018 05:20

I wonder what Swedish brands you might be talking about, having never heard of any....

LadyLapsang · 05/03/2018 07:28

crispinsshoes.com/

Crispins goes up to a size 12.
