Dinner set present for a friends 40th?

I’m not sure it’s appropriate? This guy is a good friend and they invited all of us over for his 40th at a restaurant. They other day I was at Tesco buying grocery, I found a lovely dinner set and just thought it’ll be a nice present.
The party is tomorrow and the present is wrapped. I’m now thinking if it’s a stupid present!
What do you think ladies?

Does he live by himself? It is an unusual 40th gift but plates get chipped and broken and it can be good to have a nice set of crockery. I just bought a new dinner set recently and it gives me immense pleasure!

Jas8085 · 24/02/2018 18:07

No, he lives with his wife and two boys

I’d love it personally! But depends on the person. If in doubt, give him a bottle of champers.. and keep the dinner set for yourself!

blueskyinmarch · 24/02/2018 18:10

In that case i am not sure it is a great 40th gift. It says here is a gift for the whole family not just a special gift for him.

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 24/02/2018 18:11

Not appropriate at all. It’s personal taste, semi-permanent and very obvious in the house.

Dozer · 24/02/2018 18:13

Inappropriate!

FoofFighter · 24/02/2018 18:15

Noooo!

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 24/02/2018 18:16

It's a no from me sorry.

foodiefil · 24/02/2018 18:19

😕 champagne or restaurant vouchers for somewhere swanky nearby

LockedOutOfMN · 24/02/2018 18:23

No, you need to get something for him, not his whole family.

Jas8085 · 24/02/2018 18:24

Ok - what can I get him? Champagne? Chocolates ? Or just an amazon gift voucher?

blueskyinmarch · 24/02/2018 18:26

Would nice whisky or gin be good?

RainyApril · 24/02/2018 18:27

Another no here. It's practical, family oriented and embarrassingly obvious if he decides not to use it. Unless you know they're currently eating off something far worse, and maybe not even then, it's an inappropriate gift for a birthday.

Exchange it for the best champagne you can get for the money.

Didiusfalco · 24/02/2018 18:28

I have to agree - that’s really not a great 40th present, it’s too much a matter of taste and also a bit practical not fun/indulgent.

EffingJeffer · 24/02/2018 18:31

Unless he has expressed an interest in this particular dinner set then I'd say it's a strange gift. He and his wife may think you don't like their current set and may see you as pushing your tastes on them.

If someone just randomly gave me a Tesco crockery set for my birthday I'd be a bit Confused

EffingJeffer · 24/02/2018 18:34

What indulgent things does he like?...

Eating out?
Alcohol?
Films?
Theatre?
Music concerts?
Any hobbies?
Favourite brands?

Boobaloo1 · 24/02/2018 18:36

Come on you can do better for a good friend! What does he like? Get him something he wouldn't usually treat himself to that is related to something he already likes

Fishface77 · 24/02/2018 18:37

I know what you’ve done op.
You knew what mumsnet would say.
So you’ll have to keep the dinner set for yourself unfortunately (nudge nudge wink wink).

Jas8085 · 24/02/2018 18:44

It’s a LOVELY dinner set! (Not a cheap one)

Ok then. I’ll keep it. I think I lost the receipt - so can’t return it

OP posts:
Wakeuptortoise · 24/02/2018 18:46

From tesco?

iklboo · 24/02/2018 18:48

It probably is lovely to you OP. But I wouldn't give it as a gift and I know it's ungrateful but I wouldn't want to receive a dinner set for my birthday. If someone gave my DH one I'd be a bit Confused.

Jas8085 · 24/02/2018 18:57

Ok ok - I’m keeping the dinner set!

Champagne? Won’t a lot of people give it?

What about Amazon gift voucher?

OP posts:
Fishface77 · 24/02/2018 19:08

Champers/whiskey/alcohol

eurochick · 24/02/2018 19:41

40year old whisky?

RainyApril · 24/02/2018 19:42

An amazon voucher is nearly as bad as a dinner service imo.
