heyok · 21/02/2018 18:44

I mean do they even exist anymore?

I have long hair, but being mum, nurse, etc etc my hair is constantly stool to the back of my head in a bun.

Want volume. Love that mad curls look, abit like this?

Anyone had one recently?

I second Bluntness get yourself a babyliss curl secret, really really easy way to get gorgeous curls, at least until you find someone to permit Smile.

Nousernameforme · 12/03/2018 15:29

Trouble is a babyliss curl secret is £120 and you can get a home perm for a fiver.

Bluntness100 · 12/03/2018 15:32

Sure, but a home perm comes with risks, and not just that you don't like it, and a shop perm drops out after a few weeks, where as curl secret lasts years.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 12/03/2018 15:40

and if you shop around for a deal its not £120.

sportyfool · 12/03/2018 16:23

Omg .. don't Home perm your hair unless you know what you are doing 😬😬

3luckystars · 12/03/2018 16:59

Oh I'm DELIGHTED with this news.

I have very curly hair so this is great!! WOOOOO!!!

Wynona · 12/03/2018 20:54

I have the answer... heated rollers. I have the been using them since the 90s. My hair is on the most amazing condition as I never used dye or straighteners.

I have a few grey streaks but because my bob is so bouncy it works. If you are new to rollers, I would think it would take time and patience to get right. I recently did my friend's hair and she could not believe the results. Give it a try.

StillMedusa · 12/03/2018 22:52

My DD2 had a perm just before she went to Uni. Looked amazing for about 6 months but then started to drop a bit. She eventally had her very long hair cut to shoulder length which revived it!
This is at the 6 months stage...

(She does have wavy hair naturally...as do her brothers!)

Have been watching this thread to see if any awesome secrets to curly hair get unleashed.
Lots of people mentioning the babyliss secret curl- I have some advice here! For the sake of your hair please do not try to purchase some off brand version of this.
i managed to find one for £30 and it is bloody awful.
Eats my hair.
Tried to use it a week ago and ended up sat there attached to the bloody thing until my other half came back and was able to help cut/rip my hair out of it.

I've never tried rollers- I hate sleeping with anything in my hair!

BitOutOfPractice · 13/03/2018 14:52

I think perms promise so much but so rarely deliver

TheClitterati · 13/03/2018 15:02

I think perms promise so much but so rarely deliver

this is exactly what I was popping in to say. Smile

Times might have changed since the 80's/90's - but I doubt perms have Grin

WonderLime · 13/03/2018 15:59

I'm going to piggyback this thread as I'm fascinated with curly hair (mine only curls naturally when it's chin length or above). I try using straighteners to curl (and I'm loving the look of the Babyliss Curl) but I can never get it to hold without using so much hairspray that it feels solid.

What sort of spray do you use to keep soft, bouncy curls that don't drop out?

ohh · 13/03/2018 16:35

Can I jump on the bandwagon. Not a mid life crisis. My natural hair is fine with straight hair with kinks at the back to full on waves at the sides, even a few corkscrew type curls underneath. Very odd.

Now, every time I wash it I either mousse it and pin curl it or twist it in small sections and secure hanging down with pony tail bands.

My hair is shoulder length but layered to encourage the wave. My hairdresser always rough blow dries my hair and then curls it on a round large brush to get natural volume and large waves.

Incidentally several times my daughter has french plated my hair in two sections (otherwise I look like a poodle) when wet and when its dry it looks lush.

If I I do nothing my hair looks very frizzy! SmileWould love a natural looking wave perm all over... Would save time.

Although people seem to like it when I pin curl it up (even when wet) Suits me off my face, have no fringe.

sportyfool · 13/03/2018 16:44

I don't want to be mean to a teenager but the hair doesn't n that pic is crying out for product . I think people are led to believe that you perm your hair and it will look like the first pic . It won't , you still need to style it and use products and learn how to manage it otherwise you will be a frizzball .... having had curly hair all my life im a pro but even a lot of curly girls just don't manage it and slit have frizzy hair or just straighten it .

Her.ie had a thing about perms earlier-

Can i ask, best heated rollers for fine hair, please x

IClavdivs · 14/03/2018 08:17

I've never tried rollers- I hate sleeping with anything in my hair!

I have slept with rollers in my hair - twice.

On the other hand, I probably used heated rollers (plus perms and anything else you want to name) for a total of 20 years. I heated them up while I had a shower, put them in - had it down to about 5 - 10 mins, and could even read a book while I put them in - left them in while I ate breakfast, applied makeup, etc, and then took them out for a full head of soft, bouncy, swishy curls.

ditavonteesed · 14/03/2018 08:20

Here is my perm, I have naturally very straight hair. I absolutely live it, I did have trouble finding a hairdresser willing to do it though. I still can’t stop staring at it and it’s about 2 months old now.

best heated rollers for fine hair

I have very, very fine, but reasonably plentiful hair. I used to use a local Australian brand called Sunbeam, which made rollers which allowed you to add water so that the rollers were slightly misted which really helped to set the curl. I don't think these specific ones are made any more, but they were excellent and when they packed it in, I always replaced it with the same ones.

However this was pre-ceramic coatings, heat protection sprays, etc.

Paie · 14/03/2018 13:01

This thread has convinced me... I've been wanting a perm for years but unsure as to how it would turn out.
I have very fine dead straight hair just past my shoulders.
My DD has a head full of curls and I'm so jealous!

Will be booking in the perm for just after summer Grin

Birdbath99 · 14/03/2018 14:25

Give your local training college a call. They are always desperate for clients for perms as the older generation is dying and no one needs perms anymore.

Trust me, they will welcome you with open arms and your purse will love you too.

GUMBYMUMBY · 14/03/2018 18:59

Oh god not PERMS! ( maybe I a olllldd)

PrimalLass · 14/03/2018 22:35

The tongs themselves are only about £25 and if you use hairspray it will stay for a few days if you don't brush or wash it

Mine falls out of the curl in 20 minutes.

Puppylucky · 15/03/2018 06:08

Your hair is beautiful Dita!

sandgrown · 15/03/2018 06:25

I used to have some bendy polystyrene rollers. I sprayed my damp hair with styling spray then allowed it to dry with the rollers in (soft enough to sleep in) . The result was lovely corkscrew curls which i just ran my fingers through and added a bit of hairspray.
