What do you want for Mother's Day?

AliceDMumsnet · 20/02/2018 16:37

Hi all,

We’re creating a page rounding up Mother’s Day present ideas and we need your help. We want to tap into your collective wisdom and hear about the gifts you really want, as well as gifts you’ve given or received in the past that went down a storm.

From small, thoughtful gestures to luxe treats, tell us what would make your Mother’s Day special and we’ll include your favourites in our Mother’s Day gifts page. You can then email these helpful suggestions to a disorganised DH or forgetful DC - everyone’s a winner.

If you fancy giving us a hand, get stuck in by linking to your perfect gift and telling us why you’d love it.

Mumsnet carries some affiliate marketing links, so if you buy something through our posts, we may get a small share of the sale (more details here.)

no way would I email anyone with a list of Mother's Day gift requests....that is so appallingly awful. MNHQ you have lost your moral compass with this one.

^^ This

I’m happy with anything. It’s just nice if they remember (or dh does)
A card, flowers/token gift.
I usually drive to my mums the day before and give her flowers and a gift and we ll all have dinner together. That means more to me than expensive gifts.

DottyDotts · 21/02/2018 00:42

Isn't Mother's Day generally your children making something at school or nursery and bringing it home and then being all excited and proud when they present it to you on Mumsday

ohfourfoxache · 21/02/2018 02:21

A card made by the dc (well, Ds1 as ds2 is only 7 months!)

Cuddles from the dc and a hug and a thank you from dh for going through a total of 18 months of pregnancy puking and a total of 16 months (still aiming for 18) BFing his 2 dc.

But it’s ds1’s birthday on mothers day so I don’t expect either!

AbsolutelyCorking · 21/02/2018 02:27

Patronising and stupid thread.

CountFosco · 21/02/2018 06:08

Love that only one person has linked anything and everyone else has said more or less 'homemade card and some family time'.

Elusiveone · 21/02/2018 06:15

My mum back shes besn gone 10 years

SaltySeaBird · 21/02/2018 06:21

For it not to be on my birthday!

Father’s Day is weirdly on DH’s birthday so I can’t even complain!

Schmoochypoos · 21/02/2018 06:28

A lie in!!

chocolateiamydrug · 21/02/2018 07:26

A lie in. I never get one but would love to!

LadyLapsang · 21/02/2018 07:39

Mothering Sunday is about returning to the mother church, not sending people links to gifts so companies can take a share of the profits. Also, I do enough real work without additional wife work / emotional blackmail to receive a gift. My late mother used to say, I want never gets, but at least children have the excuse of immaturity and no income to excuse asking for gifts. In an adult, it just comes across as ungraceful / grabby.

blinkineckmum · 21/02/2018 08:07

For my dh to remember.

MsJuniper · 21/02/2018 08:16

Breakfast in bed, home made card and some daffs.

Just looked it up and found it's the 11th, for some reason I thought it was the end of March.

As others have said I would love to have my mum back for Mothers Day as she died from breast cancer nearly 30 years ago. Failing that a cure for breast cancer that is non invasive.

CheshireSplat · 21/02/2018 08:43

Agree with others who don't like this thread. I don't feel like I have to enter into the commercialisation of everything: Christmas, new year, Easter, valentine's, Hallowe'en, etc etc etc.

I would like a homemade card, a cup of tea in bed and a massive cuddle from my 2 DCs.

Panting · 21/02/2018 09:19

Also, MNHQ, posting it on S&B because obvs all we want is expensive cosmetics.

Notagainmun · 21/02/2018 09:20

Thoughtful card and lovely flowers, oh and a hug off my adult DC

MrsElvis · 21/02/2018 09:21

Any of the following:

Home made cards
Bath bomb
Flowers
Chocolate
Jewellery

We don't do stuff so I certainly won't be getting jewellery but I have seen some sweet subtle personalised necklaces on social media

AliceDMumsnet · 21/02/2018 09:55

Hi all,

We hear you loud and clear: we really misjudged this one and we’re very sorry for any offence caused.

We focused too much on the people who do celebrate Mother’s Day and neglected the fact that lots of people don’t. Mumsnet should be - and is - for everyone.

Thanks for your feedback and sorry again.

Yummy tummy I'm also a single mum, with 2 young children, agree with Mrs Darcy at 18:25 last night. Until they are old enough to bring a homemade card back from school/nursery, make a little one with them, using their hand prints and treat yourself to a little something. Also plan a day trip or outing somewhere (doesn't need to cost, just a homemade picnic somewhere nice). If you can afford it maybe a takeaway to save cooking in the evening. It's not the same as when they are older and can do these things for you but it makes it a nicer day.

squarecorners · 21/02/2018 10:00

From the kid: home made present. I am actually after a mug with I love mummy on it, but I would quite like DH to get my car serviced. And valeted!

skippy67 · 21/02/2018 11:10

Well played MNHQ.

KatyS36 · 21/02/2018 11:59

Agree mothers day should be inclusive, mnhq, but you've missed the point about celebrating not necessarily being about stuff.

We, like most posters, do celebrate, just not by buying stuff.

I can buy myself stuff , but a handmade card is priceless.

Panting · 21/02/2018 13:14

No, MNHQ, you haven’t heard us loud and clear. Almost everyone wants a cost-free card or item or maybe not even an item — just a gesture like a lie-in.

This thread reminds me why MN is not the place it used to be.
