Help me with my hairstyle please!

As the title suggests, I really need help picking a hairstyle. My hair has been in this bob for years and years. I always ask my hairdresser for a bob like Pandora Sykes or the fashionable shorter hair you see around these days. It never turns out how I want, and it is wonky! Not what I want after I've spent however much on a haircut!

I've attached a photo, so I wanted your advice. What hairstyle do you think might suit me? Are there any ways to make my shorter hair look good, or should I try something totally different? If so, what?

Help me with my hairstyle please!

I’d be looking for a new hairdresser, expensive award winner doesn’t mean a good hairdresser for you. I get triangle hair if I do not have layers put in and use serum to tame it.

Spartacunt · 18/02/2018 19:45

Do you sit with your legs crossed when you have it cut? Because it is Definitely wonky! Your hairdresser needs to make sure you're not sitting with your head slightly tipped (and it happens all the time).

mercurymaze · 18/02/2018 19:54

i would just get some longer layers and have some layers around the fringe like growing out fringe, def not a lob they're pretty awful imo anyway

OliviaBenson · 18/02/2018 19:56

My hairdresser has to cut my hair each side at different lengths to make it look the same length. She does it by eye. Maybe that's what you need?

I like it a bit longer. Or you could go shorter and have a longer pixie cut with parting still?

OliviaBenson · 18/02/2018 19:56

I get what you mean about layers too. Everyone suggests them but they don't work in my hair at all.

mirren3 · 18/02/2018 20:00

I came on to say Babbyliss Big hair too, it does take a bit of getting used to. You need to dry small sections at a time. Have a look on YouTube, it has transformed my hair to a sleek shiny Bob...from a frizzy mess.

Spartacunt · 18/02/2018 20:31

If you're not great with styling, for the love of god do not waste your money on a Babyliss Big Hair! I looked like Yootha Joyce in George and Mildred when I did, and have hair like yours.

Clarabumps · 18/02/2018 20:40

I think your hair just needs a bit of tweaking, straighten it and I wouldn't pin it back. It just ages the whole style. I'd also get a different hairdresser if one side is wonky.

I've had a bob a good few times in my life and it's hard to get a good one. Best bob I ever had was by a stylist as Vidal Sassoon. I think you it could do with some shaping at the bottom and just restyled. Nothing major. And ditch the clips.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 18/02/2018 21:19

Yes the clips need to go it makes your hair look a bit Anne from the famous five! You have lovely thick hair and a good colour It just needs to be longer, it would really suit you. Ditch your hairdresser pronto.

HelpwithHairstyle · 18/02/2018 21:19

I don't think I could go any shorter, as my hair would go crazy. I love Pixie cuts, but I know they would not suit me unfortunately, my face is far too round! Okay, new stylist it is. I got to find one now! Here's to an evening of googling! Also, I definitely don't sit with my legs crossed as she always tells me not to if I find myself doing it automatically.

I know the clips don't look good, but I always wear the, as I can't bear hair in my face. Without a clip, my hair just hangs over one eye, and it never stays behind my ear. I find it soooo annoying...I wish it would just stay down where I wanted it. I am going to try and wear it down, maybe I'll get used to it and find myself less annoyed over time 😂

For a couple of years I chased around trying to find a great hairdresser. Went to ones who had won awards, even one off the telly who charged £350! And I can definitely say that awards etc are no guarantee that the hairdresser will ‘get’ your hair.

Love the hairdresser I have now, and he only costs £50 a time.

I agree with people who say you need to go somewhere else. Keep trying!

I also think some layers would be good. Bit too chunky at the moment.

cannaethink · 18/02/2018 21:37

I wouldn’t get layers! I have very thick hair too and have it in a shoulder length bob (or lob?) at the moment. I’ve had it in a quite short bob but it has to be all one length, no layers, no graduated back, otherwise it looks awful. I spent a long time growing out layers and now always make it crystal clear to any new hairdresser that there must be no layers!!
I think just straighten it, but don’t curl the ends under, so it’s nice and blunt. Then maybe add some kind of texturising product to make it a bit more modern. And lose the clip.
I have an undercut to deal with the thickness at the back which helps massively. Not to everyone’s tastes though, but I quite like it!

HelpwithHairstyle · 18/02/2018 21:39

There are no good hairdressers where I live, it's quite a small town. I feel bad asking for a different hairdresser from the same company though, she might see me when I go in😬 And then I'd be embarrassed.

I'm really glad you guys have been honest though! I keep telling people that it is wonky, and they always say oh no, of course it's not wonky...thank you for being honest with me!

I liked Rosamund Pike's hair, so maybe I'll aim for that instead of the unachievable Pandora Sykes hair or blunt cut bob I wish for !

DrRanjsRightEyebrow · 18/02/2018 21:49

Don't part it so far to the side. I know it wants to as that's what it's used to, but next time it's wet, part closer to centre, blast new parting from above with a hot dryer until dry, then blast it with hairdryer on cool setting until hair is completely cold. Do that each time you wash it for a while and you'll retrain it!

HelpwithHairstyle · 18/02/2018 21:55

Thank you for the tip, I will try it tomorrow and hope it looks better!

The Pandora Sykes bob only works on Pandora because she’s stunning with great bone structure and symmetrical features, otherwise it’s a pretty nothingingy sort of hairstyle that wouldn’t do any favours for the majority of us. Her hair isn’t anything to aspire to, it’s her face that makes it. She’d look good with a bowl cut.

Personally I think your hair looks lovely...it’s got body and wave...it’s just needs a sharper more defined cut, not a Pandora flob. Be brave. Good luck! Xx

See...it’s not the Pandora Sykes, it’s the Kurt Cobain. Would you go in and ask for a Kurt Cobain?

More structure is needed.

BelleandBeast · 18/02/2018 22:24

How did the hairdresser let you leave with hair that is so uneven? Sounds to me like she is complacent, she cuts your hair with no thought.

I too have wonky hair, the left will never take a curl under or out, just does a wonky wavy thing that looks rubbish. I use a straightening brush on it ad that does tame the wonkyness.

Sali Hughes' hair often looks wonky

here

and

this is how my hair often looks left to its own devices but not the color yet which is amazing

BelleandBeast · 18/02/2018 22:24

I meant to say to embrace the wonkyness!

Mulberrysilk · 18/02/2018 23:29

A bob really isn't a good style if you like to clip one side back. It makes it look wonky.

Mulberrysilk · 18/02/2018 23:39

What happens if thou straighten it and pin the whole front section back instead of just one side? Is it still wonky?

Help me with my hairstyle please!
Foggymist · 19/02/2018 00:14

Before you pin it back are the sides level? As mentioned if you pin back the front if a bob that side will look wonky. Get a different hairdresser, pick a style that works when pinned back if you're going to do that all the time or tell them you don't want to have to pin it back and what suggestions would they have. If you must pin it back try different styles or pins because that's very 1970s schoolgirl really. There's lovely modern plaits that you can do at the front bit or pin it back symmetrically etc.

DottyDotts · 19/02/2018 02:07

I like your bob on you... just need to sort the wonky bits out. Sissors 😜

HelpwithHairstyle · 19/02/2018 07:51

It's slightly less wonky if I pin it back like in that photo. However, the section underneath is wavier, so you don't notice wonky ness as much!

And no, even before I pin it back in my usuaal way, the sides are still wonky. Even if I go to the effort of straightening, still wonky 😂 Yes, as I said earlier I'm trying to ditch the clips. I just hate hair in my face, but I'm hoping to train my hair to stay behind my ear from now on, just so it's not in my face but it is still down!
