The ordinary- what cleanser!?

jarox · 16/02/2018 09:49

I have emailed the ordinary and been given a skin care routine so I have ordered the products advised. But I didn't realise you are supposed to cleanse and remove make up first. What is the best cleanser to use before the ordinary products?!

I love The Ordinary. It has totally transformed my skin.
I use Garnier Micellar Water first.(Senstive)

KerplunkChampion · 16/02/2018 09:59

Coconut oil?

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/02/2018 10:13

I'm using grape seed oil.

Suffragetteyblahblah · 16/02/2018 10:18

How much did it cost for you to buy the products they recommended? I'm trying to figure out if I can afford an overhaul! I've just liked a Facebook page and there is tons of info on there, some very knowledgable people on there who seem to know the products inside out.

jarox · 16/02/2018 10:22

£32 for everything they recommended!

Thanks - I was using the garnier miceller water anyway so will continue with that for now!! Didn't know if it was best to use a certain one with it!

Wow, that's really good. I've seen some pretty amazing before and afters!

Nightmanagerfan · 16/02/2018 10:29

Don’t use coconut oil - it’s comedogenic and will clog your pores.

I use The Ordinary and i use Superdrug hot cloth cleanser first, followed by rose water spritz before serums etc

My tips would be to email Deciem (Ordinary parent co) and explain your skin type and concerns - they then recommend a regime. Introduce one product at a time in case you react to anything, particularly be careful with actives - start slow and build up.

Lonesurvivor · 16/02/2018 10:32

You'll need to cleanse morning and night. At night do a double cleanse, first one to remove makeup second to clean face.
Personally I don't find miscellar waters on their own enough to properly remove all traces of makeup. I like Eve Lom but it's very expensive, I also use No7 hot cloth cleanser or gel cleanser or alpha H cleanser.
There's a No7 voucher out now so you'll get it cheap enough.

Now not been funny but I'm assuming if you didn't know that you need to cleanse morning and night you may be a skin care novice? If that's the case can I suggest you do plenty of research before starting on all the products you've bought.
Certain ones can't be used together and with some of them you need to introduce slowly and build up usage or you could end up inflaming your skin.
If you post what you bought I'll try and help.
Also have you thought about using a daily spf? This is a great weapon in anti aging. Rays from the sun contribute to the majority of skin aging/damage.
If you've retinol or vitamin C products it's a must have every day. If you don't use it all the fab work these products do will be undone as your skin will be even more sensitive and aging will worsen!

thenightsky · 16/02/2018 10:35

I use Cetaphil to cleanse, both morning and night, removed with a hot wet flannel (remember to change flannel daily if you do this).

jarox · 16/02/2018 10:55

Lonesurvivor- this is the routine I was given

AM

The Ordinary "Buffet"
The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5

PM
The Ordinary "Buffet"
The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% or 5% in Squalane
The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil

I wouldn't say I'm a skincare novice- just lazy 🙈 but I haven't used the ordinary before and I assumed they would include a cleanser! Have tried a few hot cloth cleansers and so have the Liz Earle one so could use that instead!

I have started using The Ordinary products this year and I use the Sanctuary hot cloth cleanser.

helpmeimnewtothis · 16/02/2018 12:03

Suff - please can you link to the facebook group?

Nightmanagerfan · 16/02/2018 12:16

@jarox that looks like a good start. I'd just caution starting slowly with the Granactive Retonoid - with Retonoid also the percentages are a bit confusing - the 2% is actually a higher concentrate than the 5%, so I suggest starting with 2% once a week, then building up to twice or three times a week. Squalane caused me to break out and just sat on my skin (it's not an oil but has an oily texture).

Also you'll hear differing views on whether HA or Buffet should come first. I use HA then Buffet but others do the opposite - whatever works for you. HA especially should only be applied to wet/damp skin as it's a humectant and draws moisture from the air, so if you have dry skin it might take moisture out of your skin instead and have a drying effect, not what you want!

Other tips - use a few drops of each and press, rather than rub into the skin, especially with the oil - this will prevent pilling. Also, you could use a moisturiser after the oil (maybe wait five mins before applying the moisturiser).

I second the FB group - there are loads of posts though. Read the pinned posts first as they have tonnes of info. Good luck!

helpmeimnewtothis · 16/02/2018 12:21

Nights please can you tell me what the difference is between the Retonoids and the Retinol?

I'm using the Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion daily - is there a more concentrated one to move onto?

helpmeimnewtothis · 16/02/2018 12:22

Also do the oils soak in better / faster than the squalene? I use that in the evening just before bed because it seems to take hours to soak into skin.

Nightmanagerfan · 16/02/2018 12:33

It's a bit confusing but this article helps:
beautyeditor.ca/2017/11/16/the-ordinary-retinoid

Oils soak better into my skin than squalane - but that could just be me - I find squalane just sits on my skin.

I use Argan oil from the Ordinary and it soaks in well. Rose Hip Seed Oil gets good reviews.

helpmeimnewtothis · 16/02/2018 12:51

Jarox sorry to hijak!!!

So based on the face I'm currently using the Retonoid first and then squalene afterwards I'm guessing it would be best to just switch to the retinol in Squalene - do you need more oil after that or is that enough - I don't have dry skin and the Squalene deffo takes a while to absorb!

Lonesurvivor · 16/02/2018 18:43

This is why you need to do lots of research, I'm already seeing lots of advice that conflicts with what I've learned. Not saying my research is spot on either just that it takes a lot of research to find what is the best way.
The advice above about Retonoid 2% been stronger than Retonid5% is wrong. Retinol is stronger than Retonid so retinol 1% will be higher than Retonid 2% and retinol2% will be equal (ish) to Retonid5%. This is my understanding supported by this pic from The Ordinary site.
I've also read rose hip oil should not be used after retinol as it contains Tretonid acid yet The Ordinary recommended this to you maybe though it's ok with Retinoid.
Build up retinol use slowly a couple of times a week starting low.
You could use the rose hip oil on alternative nights. Rose his oil is the only oil that isn't recommended with Retinol so you could use another oil on those nights.

I use hylauronic acid first as I read it absorbs moisture and will help draw down the ingredients from other serums on top but I don't worry if I forget and use something else first as long as it's water based. The general rule is water based serum before oil based.
Also as my skin has became used to retinol I usually apply that first and leave for an hour or two to sink in then I apply other serum after. I only apply something else first if my skin feels like it could be a little irritated.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 16/02/2018 18:53

I've been using hylauronic acid on top of Buffet. I didn't know about it absorbing moisture. I've got very dry skin - should I stop with the hylauronic acid altogether?

I love the products but I find it all a bit confusing as well.

Lonesurvivor · 16/02/2018 19:31

Hylaronic acid is great it plumps out skin
www.google.ie/amp/s/beautyeditor.ca/.amp/2014/03/11/hyaluronic-acid-skin-benefits

I wouldn't stop using it unless you feel it's affecting your skin adversely. I've found that it leaves my skin feeling nicer when I put it underneath a few layers including moisturiser.
