How do you deal with your hair on non-washing days?

KovacsOrtega · 15/02/2018 08:21

Do you use dry shampoo? Any styling products or leave-in conditioner or anything directly on dry hair? How do you deal with yesterday's product build up? Do you dampen it and re-blow dry it?

Mine resembles shredded wheat on non-wash days, but I'm new to not washing my hair every day and am after tips Grin

I'm the same. Watching with interest

dantdmistedious · 15/02/2018 08:22

Dry shampoo.

I can only stretch it to a very other day if I style it properly on the first day otherwise it looks like straw in the second.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 15/02/2018 08:23

Put it up in a chignon?

BeyondThePage · 15/02/2018 08:28

Wash day - wash, let it dry (for about an hour as I get me and everyone ready) and a quick straighten - using a heat protector spray,

next day run a brush through it - looks fine.

Something like this?

Day 1 - hair wash day - blow dry and straighten. I use a tiny bit of leave in treatment cream (not sure if this even helps tbh), straightening cream with heat protection and a bit of serum on the ends if it's going fluffy.
Day 2 - Hair down again - Dry shampoo and a bit of volumising spray on the roots, heat protection spray run through with hands, straighten any bits that have gone wild overnight on a low heat.
Day 3 - Hair up with a bit more dry shampoo if it's looking a bit gross.
I usually wash every other day, but people always comment that my hair looks nice up on day 3 so maybe I could get away with being a bit less clean!

SnackSnackEatAndCrave · 15/02/2018 08:35

Smiled that's what I do on day 3, but did not know it had a name! If the weather is cruel to my hair then I plait it back into a chignon so it doesn't go mad.

GrumpySausage · 15/02/2018 08:37

Dry shampoo for me. I also tend to curl it with tongs on the 2nd day, give myself a blast of hairspray then tie it up for bed and I can get a third day out of it.

Also a shower cap for morning showers. Minimal products work for me too as otherwise I find it weighs my hair down

I have been known to go 5 days and receive compliments but I don't like doing it often as it makes me feel grubby!

ElspethFlashman · 15/02/2018 08:42

Dry shampoo here too. Though I always tie it up as I never feel fully clean that day.

Mupflup · 15/02/2018 08:43

A bit of dry shampoo and plaited - either one to the side or two pinned up on top of my head like Julia Tymocenko. When I have time! Other than that scraped up on top of my head in some sort of semblance of a bun.

ElanorGamgee · 15/02/2018 08:43

Nothing here, I get to day four just with burning a brush though it. I am not big on products. Good shampoo and conditioner, Davines or Daniel Field and then Davines AO all in one milk spray.

What do you mean ‘yesterday’s product build up’?

thecatstrousers · 15/02/2018 09:17

Using salon shampoo has helped, I can go 3 or 4 days if I'm lucky, better shampoo seems to make the blow dry last longer. This was a bit of a revelation to me but perhaps everyone knew that!

Day 1 I blow dry it as straight as possible, I use a heat protect serum. At night I flick it over the top of my pillow and on a good morning can wake up without having to do much. Usually I give it a blast with the hairdryer and straighten a few strays.

Day 3 the same but with more strays to tame. Day 4 up.

peachypetite · 15/02/2018 09:20

I add Davines salt spray and give it a blast

KovacsOrtega · 15/02/2018 09:53

Thanks everyone for all your tips. It's not really long enough to tie up - it's halfway between chin and shoulder length with layers as well. So I can get a weeny fairly pathetic looking pony tail that's about 1.5 cm long but that's it.

When I wash it, I then use mousse and hairspray to style it - it's fine and flat and flyaway so I can't get away with not using products. I guess it's these that are causing the shredded wheat/straw effect the next day - I can barely get a brush through it once I've added dry shampoo in the mix.

I would review your products then, mine is the same length although thick. I bet if you used something else on it you could get an extra day out of it.

My hairdresser uses this on everyone in the salon. It is all I add after shampooing/conditioner.

MincemeatTart · 15/02/2018 10:00

I wash mine every day.

trumptown · 15/02/2018 10:05

I used to wash every other day, now it's more like every 3 - 4 days sometimes just once a week. My hair is chin length, layered messy bob style. I use Oribe dry shampoo after about day 3. I never blow dry (don't have a hair dryer) or do anything else. Sometimes use a bit of serum or dry oil. The texture can feel a bit rough after day 3 or 4, especially with the dry shampoo, but it looks ok.

FinallyHere · 15/02/2018 10:23

For years, i washed my hair anytime i had a shower and just left it to dry ..

New hairdresser this year, have been having a new system. Weekly blow dry then each day just brush (to get rid of any product) and style with fingers and a bit of product each day. So far, its been great. My first reaction was that would work for me, as my scalp would just get too itchy, in fact, its been great. My formerly unruly hair has been behaving itself for the first time ever and anytime i catch a glimpse of myself i think, that really doesn't look bad rather than oh, dear.

When the days get warmer, i may stop the weekly blow drys and just see how i get on with it.

Amazing, really

THATS WHAT I DO WITH MINE AND THERES ONE FOR SHORT HAIR XX

I have curly hair and only wash it every 4/5/6 days . It just kind of looks the same regardless .

MyCrap · 15/02/2018 13:03

Elanor, can I ask you if the Davines milk is heavy?? I have very fine hair that gets weighed down by some products but I like the look of that. Although I am trying to avoid silicones so that might rule this out?

MaisyPops · 15/02/2018 13:06

Day 1 - wash
Day 2 - dry shampoo and down
Day 3 - tie up
Day 4 - tie up and dry shampoo (if i really can't be bothered)

halfwitpicker · 15/02/2018 13:13

Every other day here.

On non wash days I dry shampoo, dampen fringe and blow dry. And hope for the best really.

ElanorGamgee · 15/02/2018 13:39

I would say it was light MyCrap, when I first bought it I didn't believe it would do anything at all but it does. I also use their hair perfume (don't really wear much perfume) "alluring mist" !

Ingredients of the milk are here - not sure if that includes things you are avoiding:

WATER, CETEARYL ALCOHOL, FRAGRANCE, BEHENTRIMONIUM CHLORIDE, BENZYL ALCOHOL, TOCOPHEROL, CETYLALCOHOL, AMODIMETHICONE, CETRIMONIUM CHLORIDE, AMODIMETHICONE/SILSESQUIOXANE COPOLYMER, SODIUM BENZOATE, TRIDECETH-5, CITRIC ACID, GLYCERIN, TRIDECETH-12, CYCLOPENTASILOXANE, CITRONELLOL, GERANIOL, PHENOXYETHANOL, HELIANTHUS ANNUS (SUNFLOWER) SEED OIL, LINALOOL, ALPHA-ISOMETHYLIONONE, LIMONENE, BIXA ORELLANA SEED EXTRACT.

Thebluedog · 15/02/2018 13:42

Every other day here, if I don’t wash it on day 3 it’s minging. That said I read somewhere that if you use dry shampoo at nighttime it gives it time to work through your hair better so might give that a try on the days I really can’t be arsed to wash it
