Second hole ear piercings - thoughts??

Applesandoranges99 · 12/02/2018 22:09

What are everyones thoughts on getting a second piercing on one or both of my ear lobes? Maybe even skip the "2nd hole" and move straight on to a higher lobe piercing on just one ear instead? I currently have standard ear piercings.

I am thinking of going to Maria Tash at Liberty in London - so the earings are delicate little diamonds or very very small diamond pavé set hoops.

I am 33 years young, no kids (TTC)... am I too past it to try and look "cool" with a curated ear?

I have 3 in each lobe - one eventually allowed by my mum under sufferance when I was 12, and two done myself in my bedroom with a thick sterilised needle, aged 14. My mum refused to let me have a second hole in each lobe as it was "common", so of course I had to rebel. Took her 8 months to notice as I hid them under my hair for ages! She wasn't chuffed when she noticed but could do very little given they were all nicely healed with no infection.

I also gave myself a piercing at the top of one ear, as a drunk student. Now that hurt like hell! It didn't get infected but never quite healed up right, so I took it out in the end. Still got a tiny lump there.

Your sister sounds odd. Honestly, most people won't even notice! If you fancy it, just do it. You can always take them out if you don't like them for any reason.

Like PPs, I added extra holes when I was a young teen (pin and ice method - do not recommend) and I have 5 holes one side and 2 the other. Parents didn't notice anything for months, seriously.

latara23 · 13/02/2018 09:55

I've got 3 lobe piercings but one set has nearly healed over so I only use two.

I usually wear a stud & a dangly earring or 2 studs in each ear.
I like unusual stud earrings for example I wore small neon pink hearts on Sunday & 2 patients said they liked them.

I'm 41. I would have more holes like a daith piercing but I get skin infections easily.
I usually wear sterling silver.

RoseWhiteTips · 13/02/2018 10:43

Tacky, I’m afraid.

Ha, there's always one Grin

I have 3 in one lobe and 2 in the other - they are all teenage relics (am 35)! I have recently started wearing earrings in the 2nd piercings again after many years of not using them. Go for it!

theHitcher · 13/02/2018 11:04

I've got two piercings in each ear and am very classy.

Frankiewears · 13/02/2018 11:08

It’s very generic mum-wear along with hush, converse and a parka coat. Not edgy in the least and part of a new uniform. Just add a bob.

The mum from the A word had them and she is the modern day epitome of mumsy to my mind.

Nothing wrong with it but not counter-cultural so do as you see fit.

GrannyGrissle · 13/02/2018 11:11

Get a a transverse lobe piercing? What's the big deal with Maria Tash? Any piercing studio that can be arises can pierce you with tiny beautiful jewellery and you wouldn't get gold as the initial piercing jewellery as it isn't autoclavable or pure.

AdalindSchade · 13/02/2018 11:18

It's generic mum wear because generic mums were teenagers in the 90s when it was a little bit transgressive! I remember the first eyebrow piercing I saw and even belly buttons and tongues were pretty uncommon.

zen1 · 13/02/2018 11:25

I've got two in one ear and three in the other. Apart from the first two, I had the other three done one at a time (don't know why!). Never regretted it and am now in my forties and still wear earrings in all of them every day.

Applesandoranges99 · 13/02/2018 13:50

Ah thanks so much everyone. You are inspiring!

You are right, I just need to do what makes me happy and whats the worst that can happen - I don't like it and take it out.

My sister IS very conservative. I'm a bit more edgy than she is I think...

The double piercing thing negates that idea you have of yourself.

I have a 2+1 , I'm 51 and work in healthcare. No-on has run from my room (so far)
I am debating a tragus sometime.

My DD had her lobes 3+2 but took the outer ones out (I was Hmm they cost a bit to do, but her ears yes? )

She had a helix then tragus done , then a few days ago managed to get one of her 2nd piercings in.

Having some extra precious metal in her ears does not affect her IQ or her level of 'class' .
She wears tiny pretty hoops and studs.

Be aware of healing time, go for needles and go for it Grin

I want my nose pierced. I have totallly the wrong nostrils for this to work sadly.

Theclockstruck2 · 13/02/2018 14:17

I agree with PP that since all the Mum bloggers and Insta mums got this done it does seem like generic Mum wear. I no longer view it as edgy in the slightest. However I do think it looks nice, so go ahead if you fancy it! I had a few holes as a teen but found all the back of the earrings annoying to sleep on so took them out.

Olivo · 13/02/2018 14:59

Interesting, as I think it is a big deal! Once you have a hole, you can't get rid! I had my ears pierced at 15, haven't worn earrings for nearly 12 years but hate the holes. Wish I had never had them done in the first place!

OP, I don't think age has anything to do with it, just the confidence to know or is what you want! Go for it!

PaulCalf · 13/02/2018 15:14

I have three in each ear plus one at the top. I think it was maybe a bit 'edgy' when I first got them done in the 90s, but these days they are so uncontroversial that i don't feel the need to take them out for weddings /job interviews.

ShoeJunkie · 16/02/2018 10:57

So true about 90s teens having multiple piercings - in the interests of full disclosure I also have a belly button and a nose piercing!

NormaNameChange · 16/02/2018 20:40

Ive two in one ear and three in the other plus nose, naval and other Grin im over 40 and work in a professional capacity. Not sure anyone even notices... i like them tho.

Go for it Flowers

Ginkypig · 17/02/2018 01:31

There was a thread on here before discussing piercings so I posted some pictures I didn't delete them so here they are again. Grin

Your never too old or not able to pull any piercings off, if you want it go for it!

Go for it!

I had my ears pierced at 13. At 16 I had one extra in one lobe and my Mum went mad said "You'll regret it when you're 40". I'm 40 now and love my teeny tiny act of rebellion. I have a senior role in the city and not regretted it for 1 second.

BigGreenOlives · 17/02/2018 07:27

Teens in the 1970s & 1980s had multiple piercings, anyone heard of punk? By 1994 pierced belly buttons were mainstream.

Zubrowka · 17/02/2018 07:37

I hope you're not too old. I'm 30 next week and I have 3 in each lobe, left Tragus and right double helix. The double helix is only two days old and my boyfriend caught itt really badly this morning when kissing me goodbye...ouch!! Other than clumsy men I've not really had any problems with the piercings, and what's the worst that can happen? If you don't like it you can take them out and the holes are barely visible. Do ittttt!!!!Grin

rogermooresfifthwife · 17/02/2018 13:02

I came on to post the same thing! I'm
38 next week and think I might get them done on my birthday. I have really small loves though so wondering if they'll fit. Going to get my SIL to come with me to Maria Tash at Liberty as she gets all her piercings done their and her tragus one looks amazing.

wineusuallyhelps · 17/02/2018 14:02

I was served by a 60+ woman in a clothes shop today. She had a fashionable haircut, cold shoulder top that she looked good in, and several ear piercings including a jewel stud in the cartilage. Looked great.

No one is ever too old!
