Genuinely waterproof coat that doesn't make me look like a sleeping bag on legs?

Looking for a good coat which is truly waterproof - not 'shower resistant' which has a good hood for pram walks with my baby in the pouring rain (only way to get her to sleep in the day time). I can't hold an umbrella and steer so the hood is essential.

I was out yesterday in the sleety rain in my long padded down jacket with fur trim hood and was sodden when I eventually got home (quite toasty to begin with however).

Can anyone recommend anything that doesn't look like I've draped a ground sheet over myself? Most things I've seen online are really shapeless and I'd love something to feel good wearing!

Seasalt Janelle
Joules Stormont
Landsend's Stadium Squall coat

MojoMoon · 01/02/2018 07:40

Protected species?
You'd need to add a thin down jacket (Uniqlo) underneath for warmth but they are very waterproof and pretty stylish

Joules. Doesn't look waterproof but they are.

pomadas87 · 01/02/2018 08:03

Thanks.. I was looking for something with more shape ideally, these are all pretty shapeless and long. Does a feminine waterproof coat exist?!
I'm a size 10-12 and pretty short so long parkas look a bit ridiculous on me

Joules Stormont is probably nicest of the lot

I have this and am short and it is amazing. Really warm and waterproof. Almost too warm, can remove fur too.

Believeitornot · 01/02/2018 08:14

Why do you want to look feminine WinkGrin its a coat and I’ve come to the view that decent warm coats with a proper full sized hoods are ugly.

For proper winter I’ve got a Didrikson coat. For spring weather I’ve got one from joules.

CrabappleBiscuit · 01/02/2018 08:14

North face Suzanne triclimate, proper coat and fitted with a waist. I’d say go to an outdoor shop and try a load on.

Flabbermingo · 01/02/2018 08:15

A waxed jacket, I love mine

They even do a rain skirt if you really want feminine

Oddbutnotodd · 01/02/2018 08:25

The problem with some of these that they are only waist length. Not very helpful in a downpour! I would also look at Regatta as some of their thigh length coats would be a bit longer on you if you are short. Second adding a down under layer to a thinner coat you can use all year round. Try and find one with a waist cord to give you some shape.

Spam88 · 01/02/2018 08:36

New Look have got some nice ones in at the moment.

pomadas87 · 01/02/2018 09:23

mojomoon Grin my prayers have been answered! Who knew such a garment existed www.georgiaindublin.com/product/the-full-bronte-waterproof-ensemble/

believeitornot I know practicality is most important but at 8 weeks post partum my daily walking is the only outing I get and I feel so grey and tired and lumpy still that I want a nicer coat... Wink

I think perhaps Joules might be the answer but I will take a look at regatta too - I don't need it to be really really warm as I'm happy with layers underneath and I get pretty hot anyway when walking, I just need it to be properly waterproof

You think this is shapeless?!

Scoleah · 01/02/2018 10:09

Didriksons Grin

eloisesparkle · 01/02/2018 11:21

Trixy
That coat is lovely. Does it keep you warm as well as dry ?
It looks light.

LadyFairfaxSake · 01/02/2018 12:03

Barbour?

trixymalixy · 01/02/2018 12:17

eloise, it's not warm, but you could add a thin down jacket under it.

It really frustrates me that you have to choose between warm, waterproof and not looking like you're out on a hike. You can get two out of three easily, but the holy grail of all three is difficult to find.

Sonotkylie · 01/02/2018 12:38

I know what you mean about the raincoats. Functional yes, feel good, maybe less so.
Bizarrely I have a silver metallic raincoat from Asos ...! It is the most waterproof coat I have EVER owned (and I live in the country and spend a lot of time outside and in the rain, so they do get a real test). It makes me smile too. You would need a thin down layer under it for warmth. But why not look at them too. Returns are good if you don't think the waterproofing is up to it. It's hard to spot online.
Good luck

Waspnest · 01/02/2018 12:51

I've got www.fatface.com/women/clothing/coats-jackets/sussex-jacket/924981.html#ff_colour=Chocolate . I wanted a Barbour but couldn't justify the cost. Haven't been out in really wet weather yet but it's been fine in showers.

spiderlight · 01/02/2018 13:41

I've got that fat face jacket as well and really like it but it's not even remotely waterproof in anything but the lightest shower and the hood is useless. For proper rain I have a Decathlon jacket similar to this which is absolutely brilliant.

Waspnest · 01/02/2018 14:06

Ah will take an umbrella with me when it's pouring then - thanks Spider.

Jammycustard · 01/02/2018 14:09

I got rid of my Joules fisherman jacket as it wasn’t truly waterproof and replaced it with a Barbour. Much better.
