Genuinely waterproof coat that doesn't make me look like a sleeping bag on legs?

Looking for a good coat which is truly waterproof - not 'shower resistant' which has a good hood for pram walks with my baby in the pouring rain (only way to get her to sleep in the day time). I can't hold an umbrella and steer so the hood is essential.

I was out yesterday in the sleety rain in my long padded down jacket with fur trim hood and was sodden when I eventually got home (quite toasty to begin with however).

Can anyone recommend anything that doesn't look like I've draped a ground sheet over myself? Most things I've seen online are really shapeless and I'd love something to feel good wearing!

Another vote for Joules. Not too thick but warm and waterproof. I've worn it on buggy walks all winter. Haven't got my 'winter' coat out at all.

The Regatta outlet website is closing down and has huge reductions on things. Might be worth a look to get something decent at a bargain price too.

ginauk84 · 01/02/2018 14:30

I have just bought a couple of lovely coats from Regatta, they seem to have some good deals and you can check they really are waterproof. I struggled to find anything warm too but the Regatta website has a few insulated, waterproof coats.

There's a brand in the Netherlands called HappyRainyDays that does lovely raincoats but the one I have (Becky), the hood is too small. But I do have a massive head!

Protected Species, I love mine

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 01/02/2018 14:59

I have a protected species parka and it's fab. Doesn't look waterproof but believe me, it is. It is windproof and good for power walking. It's not super warm but if I wear a thermal top in cold weather it is. I do big dog walks, so has been tested well. I have had lots of compliments about it. Had it for over a year, used most days and it looks brand new. Worth the money

bloke section in an outdoor shop. Cheaper, better made, less pink and sparkles.

fleece layers underneath, job done.

fashion coats only keep you warm and dry while they are on the bonfire.

trixymalixy · 01/02/2018 16:25

Blokes jackets look terrible on though! No waist to speak of.

dinosaurkisses · 01/02/2018 16:36

I have a Barbour parka (now on its third winter) which I love.

It badly needs waxed again, but it's very cosy and great quality. When it's waxed again it'll be properly waterproof as well.

They do need waxed every year or so, but you can do it yourself and the jacket itself will last for years.

specialsubject · 01/02/2018 17:27

a cutely tight waist buggers up the insulation and waterproofing. Which is one reason why fashion jackets are useless.

They look fine. Soggy and shivering is the bad look.

moosemama · 01/02/2018 17:43

I picked up a coat from Lazy Jacks in an outlet shop, when I wanted a Seasalt but couldn’t affod it. It was less than half the price they are online but, having had this one, I would happily pay full price for another. I love it.

It’s completely waterproof, windproof, soft 100% cottony/jersey lined and has draw-cords inside so you can cinch it in to give yourself some shape. It’s not padded, as it is a raincoat rather than a winter coat, but I wear mine right through the winter with a jumper underneath and am never cold.

LBOCS2 · 01/02/2018 17:47

I have a waterproof Barbour which does the job. Not a waxed jacket - they're not waterproof in a downpour, in my experience - but an actual waterproof coat.

It's this one but whilst looking I also found this similar one which is nice and a bit longer.

eloisesparkle · 02/02/2018 07:35

Has anybody bought the Craghoppers Emly?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 02/02/2018 07:47

I bought this one from Trespass in a sale in an outdoor shop before Christmas. It's brilliant. I haven't worn it in a downpour but I see that the reviews say others have and kept dry. I think it looks great and others have said as much too! It's very warm, has two good zipped pockets, a very sturdy main zip and an excellent hood - stays put but doesn't block peripheral vision. Rare!

brownelephant · 02/02/2018 07:49

hiking coats from outdoor stores.
regatta and didriksons are good brands. decathlon has decent ones as well.

BWatchWatcher · 02/02/2018 07:51

Merrell was the winner of previous bum covering coat threads.

purplejo · 02/02/2018 07:59

Rayna waterproof jacket This is a great waterproof jacket.

Xennialish · 02/02/2018 08:08

I have had the worlds ugliest craghoppers coat for 7 years and it is still warm and waterproof to the extent I can’t justify a new one Angry. Non car driver in Manchester so well tested. So if they now do even vaguely attractive ones, I would recommend them yes Grin

Balearica · 02/02/2018 08:09

Just bought the Seasalt Janelle for dog walking. Exactly what I have been looking for so thank you to those who suggested it :)

armaghda · 02/02/2018 20:16

I'd love one that had a fur ( fake) lining all the way down including the sleeves. I have the Joules Stormont and the top half is fur lined and it's lovely but is chilly in the arms and lower part Sad
Does anyone know of a waterproof fully fake fur lined coat ? Not a jacket.

MyBumpIsOnlyPudding · 02/02/2018 20:27

Barbour waxed jackets are amazing! We live in rainy Cheshire and mine are brilliant in all weathers. There are different cuts so you can pick a decent shape for you. I have a bedale which is the warmest and very waterproof but not what I'd call feminine, and a waxed trench coat, which is lovely with skirts and dresses, but not half as warm

MyBumpIsOnlyPudding · 02/02/2018 20:28

Still totally waterproof though

bingohandjob · 02/02/2018 22:21

Rains. Rohan. Protected Species. Seasalt.

Personal choice, but the day I decided to go for proper waterproof, sacrificing some style, was a revelation. Much rather my lovely, stylish clothes are kept dry with a practical coat which I whip off one at my destination than I look good but get damp and chilled to the bone.
