Shoes for Orthotics/in soles

LinaLaaamont · 31/01/2018 20:54

I have various foot problems which mean I’ve recently had to get (overpriced) orthotics made. In my massive footwear collection, they only fit in one pair of boots. I don’t even really like these boots. Goodbye ballet bumps, high heels, wedges, converse, Uggs and over the knee boots. Sad
I’ve had the insoles for a week but my feet are already really uncomfortable without them. Goodbye sippers too.
Can anyone recommend anything stylish that can take a thickish insole? Do I need to go up a size or half size? Heeeeelp!

Hotter shoes have removable soles so you can put orthotics in.

LinaLaaamont · 31/01/2018 21:03

Thank you endoftheline i’ll look for shoes with removable insoles. Unfortunately, the Hotter styles aren’t really me.

Are they regular fit or slim fit?
Only ask as orthotics dept made me regular fit ones and had same issue
When i complained specialist said "oh i guess we should have made you the slim fit ones like all ladies end up getting.
The slimfit style fit in m&s footglove & sketchers bikers (NB do not put in sketchers go chugga's {my sub for ugg boots} as you will wreck them)
Also like above hotter

TooManyWIPs · 31/01/2018 21:10

Oh just remembered my crocs wedges (no need for orthotics)

LinaLaaamont · 31/01/2018 21:19

I have no idea if they are regular or slim. It seems that casual footwear will be easier. I’m really struggling with what to wear to work as well on nights out. I love pretty shoes! I’m in my 30s so I would really like something current.

TooManyWIPs · 31/01/2018 21:25

Can you ask the company that made them? Maybe trip with orthotics to m&s as a stop gap for now.
Got black loafers for work and a pair of black court style wedges for "out".
My crocs wedges look pretty i think (black floral)
(In my 30's too: feet want granny shoes, brain says noooo)

geogteach · 31/01/2018 21:27

Not stylish bit crocs instead of slippers indoors (no need for insoles). Winter is usually easier than summer. I have boots from Ecco, sketchers and Dr Marten with removable insoles. Clark's haves a few styles with removable insoles. I have even had converse with removable insoles but they were too narrow really.
I look well dodgy shoe shopping tugging at the insides of shoes to find the removable insole.

LinaLaaamont · 31/01/2018 21:30

Just googled Crocs wedges - so much nicer than I expected! I’m going on holiday in April so i’ll bear them in mind.
My mum suggested Fitflops since she says hers are comfy and supportive. Has anyone tried them?

it's really difficult to get any smart shoes compatible with orthotics in my experience. A few years ago there were a few mary jane styles that worked but I haven't found anything in that line recently that isn't totally daggy. I've currently got a pair of shoe boots from Rieker which work, and several pairs of boots (winter is much the easiest). In summer I have taken to wearing 'office shoes' without orthotics as I don't walk much there, then if I go out at lunch change into trainers with orthotics. Lace-up Oxford type are also fine, but don't work with most of my skirts/dresses. I spend my life running up and down stairs wondering where I left my orthotics!

TooManyWIPs · 31/01/2018 21:37

Didn't buy fit flops myself but have heard they good. Have had good experience of the avon knock-offs if you know an avon lady?
Birkinstocks also good for summer

goose1964 · 31/01/2018 21:39

Birkenstocks have their own shaped footbeds. They are really comfortable once you've broken them in , as they mould to your foot

LinaLaaamont · 31/01/2018 21:47

I forgot about Birkenstocks! I have a pair somewhere.
And I do know an Avon lady so I will look at their shoes.
Ordering online is probably out for a while since i’ll Need to try things on with the orthotics.
Thanks for all the advice. Any more suggestions would be welcome!

I’ve ripped out the shoe’s original insole where possible.

thegamblersmrs · 31/01/2018 21:57

I've worn orthotics since I was 15, around 17 years. They are nhs made ones and they fit in all my shoes, trainers, flats and uggs. Only things they don't work in is heels due to the gradient.
They were agony to begin with but I was 15 so might have had something to do with being a stroppy teen.
Hope you get used to them soon.

IreneDunne · 31/01/2018 22:15

Some Red Or Dead shoes work, although some tip from Granny Chic into fugly.

Agree with PP that Doc Martens have the depth available and depending on your style you might like their Chelsea boot.

Wh0KnowsWhereTheT1meG0es · 31/01/2018 22:25

I find they are too high even for most lace-up shoes as my heels end up flopping out of the back. Ditto Mary Janes. So I can only wear them in trainers and boots (Clarks boots). Birkenstock sandals are great in summer though and I wear Moshulu slipper boots with the orthotics around the house. I've had to completely ditch Crocs - I used to wear them quite a bit but they are a very fast way to end up with painful feet again now.

LinaLaaamont · 01/02/2018 16:44

Thanks everyone. I got some wide fitting boots in M&S today and a bargain pair of lace up trainers things in their sale. I’ll look at all the other brands suggested.

Dd has orthotics and they seem to fit well in hush puppies for school shoes. I was ready to cry every August until we discovered this. No idea if hush puppies do any nice adult shoes though.

ThereWasABaboon · 01/02/2018 17:23

Skechers wide fit

Shambolical1 · 02/02/2018 14:52

FitFlop do have a few styles of shoe (rather than the sandals) which have removable footbeds.

I think it's the F-Sporty range. They have loafers, ballerinas, Mary Janes. They're described as 'average to wide' fitting and come in half sizes.

Also their 'Loaff' range if I remember rightly have removable insoles, again half sizes, fit described as 'generous'.

Some good bargains in their Outlet at the moment and discount codes around too.

Granted not everybody's thing but very comfortable!

Passthecake30 · 02/02/2018 19:39

I've worn othotics for years, they are 3/4 length so come under the ball of the foot. They work in any trainers, including converse, Clarkes brogues and all boots. Like a pp, I do end up wearing ballerinas (clarks with a instep bit) at times, just make sure I then wear them in the evening etc. how big are yours?

LinaLaaamont · 03/02/2018 10:30

Passthecake They are massive - long and deep. I am struggling with the fit of any shoes now. Even the new wide fit ones I bought are too tight across the top of my foot and my heels are too narrow for them. I’ve made an appointment to go back to the podiatrist to see if he can help. They cost £190 and are almost unwearable Angry

Passthecake30 · 03/02/2018 11:55

I'll take a picture of mine later and post it. They weren't cheap, but I've got them recovered/reposted and I imagine that they will last forever!

Passthecake30 · 04/02/2018 17:32

Here it is, probably about 17 years old now! They come to just under the ball of my feet.

Shoes for Orthotics/in soles
Toddlerteaplease · 04/02/2018 18:20

I've got orthotics in my Clark's work shoes. And the original insole is still inside.
