Lovely slippers that don't pong!

Just that really.
I've had some really cute Ruby & Ed and Cath Kidston slippers in the past but gosh they get smelly quickly and even if you wash them they aren't great.
What am I looking for? I'm thinking autumn/spring rather than full winter - I have some sheepskin slippers but they are a bit too hot if it's not that chilly.

Felted or boiled wool slippers are good for not ponging - in fact anything made of wool or cotton will be better than man made fibres.

Mine were made by Ecco, called Easy L. I am not sure if they are still available, but there should be similar ones.

arousingcheer · 28/01/2018 00:50

Yup, felt Haflingers or similar. I also have a bunch of these and will never go back to low-cut slippers again as they keep my ankles warm: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0027VS2A0/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8

I probably want something slide-on (too lazy to bend over) but I'll look for wool/cotton, thanks.
Also would like something sparkly/colourful!

Sheepskin if you don't mind spending a bit, they do last for ages and can go in the washing machine.

Celtic sheepskin are amazing.

I got some sheepskin slippers in Aldi on Friday - very Ugg like and £15! Love them!

I already have sheepskin as I said but they are a bit warm for autumn/spring.

I wear socks in my slippers and no longer have this issue!! It revolutionised my slipper love.

SyrilSneer · 28/01/2018 16:11

I have the same issue. Muji cotton slippers. I think they have felt and linen ones too.

FeedtheTree · 28/01/2018 16:14

In Spring I wear those IKEA flannel ones that look like you're padding around in a spa. Not 'lovely' but dirt cheap, surprisingly comfortable, don't smell even if they get wet or if your DS teen borrows them

drspouse · 28/01/2018 16:22

pet maybe I just have horrid feet as I still have this problem with socks.

drspouse Celtic and co do slip on thong type sheepskin slipper. I wear them in the summer when too hot for my sheepskin mules, which I swear by in chillier times

JellySlice · 28/01/2018 22:32

Synthetics are the worst offenders. Do you wear non-leather shoes? Or shoes lined in artificial materials? Are your socks at least 70% cotton?

Do you wear the same shoes every day? It can take 24h for a pair of shoes to completely dry, even if they haven't been soaked through.

Something that can help keep shoes non-pongy (don't know about slippers) is keeping a teabag in each shoe whenever you're not wearing them. You can reuse the teabags until they look like their about to tear.

drspouse · 29/01/2018 08:43

I haven't checked the inside of all my shoes but sometimes it's hard to tell (e.g. "fabric inner" could be anything!). I rotate shoes and socks are cotton or bamboo (or my own knit wool). But tights are nylon obviously.
I tend to go barefoot when it's warm enough to let my toes out so I'm not sure sheepskin flip flops would really fit the bill!
These might well work (bright, slip on, boiled wool) but I think I'd quite like to find similar in cotton.

PS haven't heard the teabag tip but I'll happily give it a go!

You need natural fibers. Synthetic is the worst, esp with bare feet! 🤢

drspouse · 29/01/2018 11:08

Erm yes I do get that Kits but everything you buy just says "textile inner" which is NO USE.
(and there are no natural fibre tights that stay up).

I love my Mahabis. I've had them for a while and they don't pong.

drspouse · 29/01/2018 12:17

Ooh those look lovely but £££.
Do you take the soles off round the house, or is it just a gimmick to get you to buy spare soles so you can have a different colour?

OP posts:
trixymalixy · 29/01/2018 12:26

I wear them without soles inside and I have the soles by the back door so I can in theory clip them on if I go out to the bin. In reality I don't use them much as it's quicker to shove on DH's shoes!

I absolutely love the slippers on their own though so not that bothered about the sole bit. I've had them for years now and they still look new.

trixymalixy · 29/01/2018 12:27

I also bought them when they weren't quite so pricey, but there's always a discount code available somewhere.

JellySlice · 29/01/2018 12:34

It could be genetic. Some people just have smellier sweat.

Rubbing a freshly-cut slice of lemon on the soles of your feet, and then dusting with talc, has an amazing effect. Fresh lemon, literally no more than a minute or two old, has an amazing deodorising effect. Works on pits, too.

Kitsharrington · 29/01/2018 12:41

Erm yes I do get that Kits but everything you buy just says "textile inner" which is NO USE.

... wool or sheepskin are your options.

Lanaorana2 · 29/01/2018 12:44

I spray antibac kitchen spray into my slippers. Hasn't killed me yet, but the smell before I did this might have done.

drspouse · 29/01/2018 13:28

Kits that is really unhelpful when most of the slippers that are not sheepskin (as I say, I already have these, and they are too warm for some times of year) say that they are textile but give no composition.

So you cannot tell if they are wool, cotton, or synthetic.
So it is no good telling me to buy wool lined slippers if the slippers don't say what they are lined with.

OK I could snip a bit off the lining in the shop and subject it to the burn test but I suspect they might be a bit cross.

Lana yes I'm a bit afraid I'll take out one of the DCs.

Jelly I'm not generally smelly, and my feet don't smell when not in the slippers, but maybe it is just my feet.
