Which conditioner for no poo?

zippyswife · 27/01/2018 21:55

After reading about using conditioner in place of shampoo on here I gave it a go this week. I was pleasantly impressed. Hair not greasy and maybe a bit less dry (I have extremely coarse and frizzy hair). Just wondering though can I use any conditioner to wash with or should I be using a certain type? And are there other things I should know?

Sorry no help here but the title made me spill my drink 😂🍷

tabulahrasa · 27/01/2018 22:35

You need to do a final wash to get all non soluble stuff like silicon out of your hair...

And it needs to be a conditioner with nothing like that in it either.

Look up curly girl, that's a co-washing technique.

Aridane · 28/01/2018 10:02

There was a fab thread on this , referencing loads of suitable products. Alas, I have never been able to,find it since

MightyMunki · 28/01/2018 13:18

Tre Semme botanique is suitable and very affordable. I use both the shampoo and conditioner from the range as my hair is quite long but whilst it was shorter, just the conditioner was enough.

DunkandEgg · 28/01/2018 13:23

Blurgh, botanique is so heavily, chemically perfumed that after getting down to half a bottles worth I just couldn't use it anymore. I'd feel a headache coming on and feel sick. Such a shame.
OP, as well as the botanique try Mixed Chicks conditioner or the Cantu range conditioner.

MightyMunki · 28/01/2018 15:58

That’s a pretty extreme reaction dunk. I’ve used it since going curly girl friendly and not noticed anything. It’s not particularly overly scented compared to everything else out there.

DunkandEgg · 28/01/2018 16:14

It is. I'm very non plussed in most things and I'm not sensitive to anything - beauty wise or anything, but botanique is practically fumey and overpowering. Awful stuff and never touched it since.

The Superdrug extracts range or Tesco pro vitamin.

womanhuman · 28/01/2018 16:15

Look for curly girl groups on fb for full instructions. It’s amazing.

zippyswife · 28/01/2018 21:25

Thanks all.

Do I need to use a clarifying conditioner/shampoo first before I go no poo? Or can I just crack on with the conditioner only? Think I’ll try Tesco’s pro vitamin as I get my weekly shop online from today there anyway. So it’s easy.

Hello, I use the Palmers olive oil cowash cleansing conditioner and it is really good.

Brighteyes27 · 28/01/2018 21:33

Superdrug have a good selection in. Check out the curly girl FB page.

zippyswife · 28/01/2018 21:34

Thanks Mrs. Do you use that every time you wash it? Just instead of shampoo? And then just normal conditioner on the ends after?

You need to have a final wash with something like baby shampoo. Then use conditioner without anything in it which isn't water soluble such as silicones (which go under loads of different names). I use the very cheap pink one from Wilko. Join the Facebook group for curly girls, they have lists & loads of help on there.

Mrspig86 · 28/01/2018 21:41

Hi. Yes now I use it every time I wash it which is every other day, and I don't use anything else. The only time it gets normal shampoo is every 3 months at the hairdressers. It doesn't lather like normal shampoo but you soon get used to it.

sparklesbarkles · 28/01/2018 21:43

I do curly girl. Use baby shampoo to get rid of build up, then cantu conditioner.
I also use cantu shampoo but only because I had bought it ages ago.
If you're going for curls, then their curl activator is good, or the custard for stronger hair

zippyswife · 28/01/2018 21:44

Great. I’ve just joined a couple of the curly girl fB groups so I’ll have a proper read.

I went into this the othe day without reading up on it and just used conditioner instead of shampoo- so sounds like I need to read up and do it properly!

To be honest I’m not really going for curls, I’m aiming to help take my coarse frizzy hair. I just wanted to see if this might help. Curls would be nice but taming the frizz is the biggest hurdle.

I use a rose shampoo from a health food shop. Can't remember the brand, but it's in most health food shops. It's really reduced the frizz for me.

MightyMunki · 28/01/2018 22:04

The trick if you want to avoid frizz is to avoid friction, normal towels are really abrasive on hair that’s prone to frizz. You can buy really soft microfibre towels at decathlon for under a fiver, they’re really good for wrapping up wet hair whilst you get ready etc.

womanhuman · 28/01/2018 22:52

Use a shampoo with no silicones but with sulfates for one last shampoo. (The sulfates get any left over silicones out - handwash or fairy will do.) Then wash with a conditioner that meets CG rules. Make sure you style with CG friendly stuff too.

I treat plopping etc as optional. (Ie I don’t...)

tabulahrasa · 29/01/2018 01:24

Yeah the plopping, styling etc are optional... the main thing is the products that work for just co-washing Smile

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 29/01/2018 01:30

Honestly, no-pooing has transformed my hair. I used to spend a fortune on no-frizz products, and now don't have to!

I co-wash three or four times a week, bit of hair oil, that's it. It's so liberating!

zippyswife · 29/01/2018 19:43

Thanks for the advice. Can’t wait to get started!!

I've decided I'm going to give this a go as well. Co-washing rather than curly girl as I have thick but fairly straight hair that is currently a frizzy mess.

Just found this seemingly fantastic bargain just now and thought I'd share with you all Matrix Biolage Cleansing Conditioner.

There's one for fine hair on there as well.
