Stockholm city break - cold weather advice

I'm off to Stockholm in February with DH, kiddie free for a special birthday celebration, am very excited! I live in Scotland and below freezing currently so used to cold weather but know to expect up to -10 on a daily basis. I feel the cold really easily (especially feet) so l am looking for recommendations for very warm but non bulky socks. Also for thermal under layers...my normal day wear is skinny jeans so not sure if base layer thermals will be too bulky?
Any advice gracefully received and any experience of dress code / typical style for Stockholm bars/Restaurant would be great also.
Thanks in advance!

I've never been to the ABBA museum! ShockConfused

Today end of January it's -6.4C and unusually cold with a thin layer of snow outdoors. I plan on wearing ordinary black jeans or trousers, my Timberland boots, a down jacket, a knitted ski hat, and gloves or mittens. Under that a blouse and a pullover. Had I had scheduled meetings, maybe I'd chosen something more strict. People who walk a lot to get to the office are seen entering the office wearing ordinary wind-stopper trousers over their ordinary trousers even though this looks quite ugly. Had it been even colder than today - like -10C or colder - I'd probably have had a an outdoorsy down skirt and jumped out of it as soon as I'd gotten inside the office, and have stuffed the skirt in a bag on the return trip when the temperature hopefully has risen. A down skirt is an insulated Scandinavian skirt for wearing in cold climate, you open it with a zipper and its super easy to jump in and out of it as need be. It's like a down jacket, but in the form of a skirt... (There are similar trousers for men, with zippers along the entire leg, the zipper like a stripe on the trousers.)

We've got "casual Friday" at work every day. Here's a tip on Dress Code: www.thespruce.com/casual-friday-etiquette-tips-1216797

Blush at soccer alma! that'll teach me not to preview messages. How on earth did predictive text get that!!

Clearly I meant Sodermalm and top points to whoever figured that out Grin

You're making me want to book a trip now OP. It's been too long.

Abba museum is brilliant.

crackerjacket · 22/01/2018 15:50

Sounds like a fab trip, OP, i'd love to go.

My tips (live in Canada):

Definitely wear long johns under stuff (I don't recommend jeans tbh, unless you're gonna be indoors lots)
Good hat
Good coat
Good boots

crackerjacket · 22/01/2018 15:51

FWIW if its humid and minus 5 you'll be a lot colder than dry and minus 10.

Also, bear in mind the wind chill - it really does feel much colder if it's windy.

Abba museum is brilliant.

I intended to go once but when I got there the queue was tremendous so I thought I'd spare it for another day.... the days are still counting... don't think I'll go there actually.

But the Wasa museum is a must, very interesting but one should really go on a guided tour, not stroll around by oneself.

Weather: And today it's +1C and sleet again, the prognosis for later today is +7C so no "cold weather" anymore. Here's a site where you can check out the weather right before you leave: www.klart.se click on the region and and then zoom in on the more precise area (town) where you're going, the weather prognosis for the entire week will show and you can also scroll right to see a /weaker/ prognosis for the week following after this week.

Oh, one more thing! (This is actually kind of important).
If you hear a whistle going off "wwwooooo" (once) and after a while "wwwoooo-hoooo" (twice) then again "wwwooooo" (once) etc.
This is the snow clearing going on. Watch out for falling ice blocks and snow balls. Some people actually have snow clearing as a job, and it's not for the faint-hearted:

Lndnmummy · 24/01/2018 18:32

Swede here, it is not that cold at the moment. Swedes typically dress “normally” and then a kick ass coat. It is warm indoors so unless you are actually skiing then no need for thermals etc. Unless you don’t have already mentioned kick ass coat. Scarf and gloves are useful and maybe a hat if it gets over -10 but I think that is unlikely. Don’t wash your hair before you go out and don’t wear moisturiser that is water based as it will freeze.

Ignore newyearniki. Stokholm is not boring, it’s ace. Some people are just arsey and like to let others know. You will have a great time.

domesticslattern · 24/01/2018 19:14

I loved Stockholm. The Vasa was mind blowing.
You're going to have a great time OP.

YES!

Yes, that's so obvious I didn't even think about it. You only make the mistake with the water based moisturiser once. Ouch! Feels like crab pincers pinching on your cheeks.
