Stockholm city break - cold weather advice

JoanDarc · 20/01/2018 18:54

I'm off to Stockholm in February with DH, kiddie free for a special birthday celebration, am very excited! I live in Scotland and below freezing currently so used to cold weather but know to expect up to -10 on a daily basis. I feel the cold really easily (especially feet) so l am looking for recommendations for very warm but non bulky socks. Also for thermal under layers...my normal day wear is skinny jeans so not sure if base layer thermals will be too bulky?
Any advice gracefully received and any experience of dress code / typical style for Stockholm bars/Restaurant would be great also.
Thanks in advance!

I went in December 2016, I wore a t shirt, a shirt , a jumper and then thick coat over that and I was fine. When I was there it was cold but sunny and still most of the time. There was none of the horrible freezing wind that goes right through you that we get in the UK

It is a fabulous city. If you’re into photography makes sure you don’t miss out on the photography museum. Skansen is a wonderful museum but in minus 10 mightn’t be great as it’s outside! Soccer Alma is a great trendy area for a wander.

Swedish style isn’t dissimilar to ours but everything is understated - leave the glitter at home.

I’m envious - it’s a great place for a break

ZaraW · 21/01/2018 13:57

GreyGarden December 2016 was unseasonably warm I was walking around with a thick sweater and T-shirt as a base layer.

hevonbu · 21/01/2018 13:58

The weather dictates the dress code, as someone said. It can be +5C or if you're unlucky it can suddenly drop to -15C. For the latter occasion a "Skhoop Mina Mid Down Skirt" is handy as it's so easy to jump in and out of (it'll be warm as soon as you go indoors). The "tinfoil" soles are recommended, don't know what they're called, but if someone says "tinfoil soled" I get straight away which ones they're talking about. Aim for -5C and if it's any cooler you can bring a thin merino wool sweater and a pair of long johns... mittens are recommended over gloves.

wizzywig · 21/01/2018 14:00

So jealous! Just keep stopping for coffees and hot choc and cardomon buns.

hevonbu · 21/01/2018 14:01

Um, what's "Soccer Alma"??

AdultHumanFemale · 21/01/2018 14:05

If you feel the cold and want to give yourself a break, the underground is well developed and easy to use, and a permanent, gigantic public art exhibition. There is also plenty of really talented buskers. But distances are tiny, I ran around all over the city as a teen, and it really is no hardship.
The pavements in central Stockholm are kept free from ice, but if you get 'out' a bit, be wary of slippery or uneven surfaces under foot.
Also remember that that many cafés offer free top-ups of coffee, 'påtår' [paw-tor], as it is known, so although it may seem pricy for a single cup, you are usually expected to have a top-up. Ask though, as some cafés don't offer it.
See if your accommodation offers a 'tork-skåp' [tork-skawp], a hot-air drying cupboard which you can pop your coat in if you have got caught out in snow and got wet. It's awful to have to put on a damp coat to go back out again.
Enjoy, it's lovely!

AdultHumanFemale · 21/01/2018 14:08

Hah, I am also trying to figure out Soccer Alma. I'm sure it's something phonetic which will make perfect sense. Or predictive texting.

hevonbu · 21/01/2018 14:09

Yes, you should get a pair of ice grippers.

IamLucyBarton · 21/01/2018 14:13

Sodermalm = soccer alma

hevonbu · 21/01/2018 14:15

Södermalm = soccer alma

I don't get it? You're a fan of Hammarby? That is it??

hipsrose · 21/01/2018 14:21

I adored Stockholm and am hoping to go back again sometime! Would definitely recommend tights under jeans and some nice woolly insoles for your boots.

The Fotografiska Museum is fantastic!

IamLucyBarton · 21/01/2018 14:23

Somebody said Soccer Alma is a nice trendy place, someone else said they were trying to work out what they meant. I guessed it was a spell check typo.

Simple.

AdultHumanFemale · 21/01/2018 14:37

I just said it quickly lots of times, and figured out that it was probably Södermalm Grin Yes, lovely.

PNGirl · 21/01/2018 14:48

Why would anyone come on a thread like this to tell someone their planned, booked holiday is to somewhere shit? Jesus. I bet you were the kid at school telling other girls their new shoes were sooo last term.

Just wanted to chip in and say I would try Uniqlo Heattech tops under your coat. Possibly the roll-neck ones.

bingohandjob · 21/01/2018 14:59

Stockholm is a great city - you'll have a wonderful time wandering and exploring. The ABBA museum is fun, and I loved the Vasa museum (really did not expect to, but bloody loved exploring it), really friendly people, pastries and bread to die for and loved exploring the old town. Uniqlo heattech base layers are fabulous, merino chunky walking socks are good (Costco do good ones, if not, go for winter heat ones from Blacks or any camping gear shop). Get a trapper hat - the wind chill is what'll freeze you. Layers - once you get indoors it's toasty. I found it very casual and practical in terms of style.

Sidenote: if you're the kind of person that finds places that loads of people love, find interesting and engaging, maybe the problem is your negative outlook rather than the place. Grin

JoanDarc · 21/01/2018 15:12

Thanks so much everyone for the wonderful advice - will get some things ordered tomorrow based on it. Also thank you for the excellent suggestions for places to visit - Vasa and Abba Museum were both on my list as was people watching over coffee and buns! Smile
I'm really excited to go now; it's always been on my list of places to visit but as a Scot the warmer Mediterranean climate normally wins for holidays!

Posted upthread and for some reason I sad Muji heat-tech when I meant Uniqlo, as pp say. They're very good. I’d go for the extra-warm ones which are really toasty.

Terpsichore · 21/01/2018 15:19

Just one more idea, OP, this is a great place for people-watching while you enjoy your fika Grin lovely café in gardens with a fantastic bakery It's not far from the ABBA museum, Vasa Museum, and Skansen, and it reopens on Feb 1st. You can go there on the tram. Perfect.

hevonbu · 21/01/2018 15:58

The café is indeed nice but wouldn't you need winter equipment to get there in February? Feels a bit off... chilly... is it open in winter? Oh, I see, it opens up in February.

hevonbu · 21/01/2018 16:02

@IamLucyBarton Well, it could be that they're a fan of the soccer team also.

And I loved this place and the cafe was fab
fotografiska.eu one thing I would add - make sure you've got a credit/debit card you're happy to spend freely on - loads of places cashless and only take cards eg Fotografiska was plastic only throughout

chemenger · 21/01/2018 16:30

We loved Stockholm, loads to do. The Vasa was my favourite and probably in winter you won’t have to queue to get in. We were there in July and it was 30 C every day, everyone was complaining about the heat, so I can’t help with dealing with the cold.

FancyNewBeesly · 21/01/2018 17:07

Opposite the street that the Abba museum is on, there are steps up to a hotel with an amazing outdoor terrace (no doubt heated in winter!), and they do a massive buffet brunch on Sundays, worth a look :)

We had amazing meals at Oaxen Slip and Nytorget 6, reviewed here along with some others www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/travel/2014/jul/20/stockholm-top-10-good-value-restaurants
