When I wake up my nose and chin are oily. when I put my make up on, I use bare minerals powder. My nose, cheeks and chin are flaky. Wash my face and use oil free moisturiser. Use a night cream. Just wonder if I'm doing it all wrong.
My face has become more dry in the 3 weeks of this new routine as before I'd just wash my face with dove body wash and no moisturisers but suffered with spots, dull skin and same oily t-zone.

When I say cheeks it's more the skin from side of nostrils and smile lines area. Sides of my cheeks and jaw line are fine. Also above my eye brows are really dry.

Try a balm cleanser and facial oils. Do you drink water?

Are your makeup products old?

MotherOfBeagles · 17/01/2018 14:09

What primer do you use? I get the same unless I use a moisturising water based primer.

happyfrown · 17/01/2018 14:13

Yes I drink loads of water and eat quite well. I wear make up every day so my make up is bought often.

What's a balm cleanser? Where would I look for facial oils? The lady in boots who I asked advice from said not to use oil based because I have oily t-zone? I'm not sure as it goes flaky once make up is applied?

MotherOfBeagles · 17/01/2018 14:18

Oily skin can go flaky when you put makeup on it. Not exactly sure why. I used magical Mirinda balm from lush as as a balm primer or this fancy jelly one which was water based which cost the earth that I got as a gift.

happyfrown · 17/01/2018 14:41

I don't use primer, my face really don't like products. I usually come out in spots when using lotions etc. I was expecting my face to explode in pimples with this new moisturising regime. Last time I used primer -bought with the box set of make up I ended up a spotty mess. That - plus untold wasted money on products Put me off and that's why I just washed with dove and left it at that. But caught myself in a shop mirror few weeks back and looked like I had the face of a corpse! Grey, thin and dull Sad
I will look into these balm things

Do you exfoliate?

I would (if you can) go for a dermalogica facial. They will look closely at your skin and tell you what you need to do to keep up the good work they do.

Dermalogica have a great powder exfoliant, it’s gentle but super effective. It should get rid of the flakiness.

You can use oils with combination skin. Kiehls oils are fab.

happyfrown · 17/01/2018 15:05

No but it was my next thing i was thinking of asking at the shop. My t-zone goes red after washing, my nose like rudolph so the thought of have an abrasive on it didn't sound good?

Earlier i was thinking of looking into seeing a dermatologist. It's just money at the moment. Tight as ever.

OP posts:
Lentilbaby · 17/01/2018 16:24

OP there are lots of exfoliants now that are not abrasive....they are brilliant for irritated skin.
I’ll have a look for some less pricey ones....

Also, there is a new company called Deciem that do a range called The Ordinary. I kid you not, their products are really cheap (I’m talking £5) and beauty editors are raving about them! I’ve just received my order. I emailed them with all my skin complaints and they got back to me with a combo of 3 products which cost we around £15!
Look them up! X

happyfrown · 17/01/2018 17:46

Great! I'll look them up, sounds good.

As I say I gave up using lotions and potions until recently and it cost me £27 for my morning cream, night cream, and 2 face cleansers!

The last couple of days I've been missing one out to see which one is drying my face more. This morning I left out the day cream but my face still flaked. Day before I left out night cream... still flaked. I've got a suspition it the salicylic morning wash so that's my next try. In the evening I take my make up of with micellar.

My skin is combination. I bought the Neutrogena Salicylic acid face wash and found that it was good when my skin was congested but was too drying to use all the time.

This mask is exfoliating without having to scrub.....

It’s a good brand x

happyfrown · 17/01/2018 18:53

Yes I read it's drying so hoping if I cut it out the extra dryness I'm getting will improve.
My friend said my face looks fresh the other day and I think it is looking better. Not sure which one is helping with that haha. That's the problem when using many new things at once. Just need sort out the flaky bits. Smile

Had a look at deciem and looks impressive. They even do foundation! The ordinary is OK price range but the other product are SO pricey. I see it only in E1 so might take a trip there.

I highly recommend la Roche posay products. Been looking for something for years tried everything..... I'm using a lipiKur soap on my face which leaves it amazingly clean but not dry. Hydreane moisturiser. Have a look at their website. My skin looks better than everafter I started using their products.

Lentilbaby · 17/01/2018 19:00

I ordered The Ordinary stuff online but they have a shop in Covent Garden. Go if you can as apparently they give you lots of good advice.

Good luck OP, make sure you report back! X

happyfrown · 17/01/2018 20:22

Thanks will check out la Roche too.

I will Def try to get to the shop. I'm dying of laryngitis at the moment with half a voice so when venture out when I'm better.
I was going to have a go at bare minerals in a liquid or cream which has ever it is but might just check out the deciem one so will go to get a colour match.
Thanks all x

I've found the culprit! I skipped the salicylic morning wash and washed with micellar. The difference in the flakyness was great. I still had slight flaky skin at side of the nose and laughter lines but no where near as bad, which is a huge improvement.

OP posts:
Lentilbaby · 18/01/2018 15:15

That’s good OP! Probably worth trying an exfoliant still though x

Yep I'm still going to look for exfoliant and the ordinary. When I'm feeling better will take a trip to London. Will give me time to save some penny's in the mean time.

OP posts:
Lentilbaby · 18/01/2018 22:08

@Honeycake50 What products are you using from The Ordinary?
I’m breastfeeding so can’t use retinols. They recommended for me- Zinc and Niacinamide serum, Hyaluronic acid serum and a hyaluronic acid surface moisture.

AManWalksIntoABarOuch · 18/01/2018 22:13

Your skin may be creating more oil because it's feeling stressed as the products you use are removing the oil.
Does that make sense?
The best thing I ever did for my oily skin was to start using oil. I clean my skin with oil and add a few drops of oil to moisturise.

AManWalksIntoABarOuch · 18/01/2018 22:16

And if you are looking to see which products are potentially causing issues, you'll need to stop using them for more than one day. :)

If you decide to use a balm cleanser, a flannel or muslim cloth will exfoliate.

happyfrown · 19/01/2018 09:14

Yes I get the washing oils away, it's only t-zone thats oily first thing in the morning and only my chin gets spots and since using these product my nose pores are really visible. I get rare nose pimple.

What oil do you add? Years ago when I bothered with my face the creams I used weren't oil free and they brought me out in spots everywhere.
Yes I've stopped the salicylic now I've found it was drying. I usually wash with a flannel not too much as my face goes red and I get a shiny nose lol

ggirl · 19/01/2018 09:45

I have similar skin OP and I have found facial oils have helped a lot.
I use Avene cream cleanser for red sensitive skin and clean it off with soft makeup sponge and water.
Clarins blue orchid facial oil morning and night and I don't use night cream .This stuff is gorgeous. They also do one for combo skin but I prefer the one for dehydrated skin as it sorts out my dryness better.
I occasionally use facial cream after the oil in the morning but I wear CC cream with spf50 so usually that's enough moisture .and I powder my t-zone and greasy eyelids

happyfrown · 19/01/2018 10:13

There's so many choices but it puts me off having to go through them to find the ones that help. My salicylic cost £7 and now that money down the drain!
Will check it out, looked at all the suggestions and really appreciate people advice.
