I am a bit of a cosmetics junkie. I have been reading about retinol and would like some advice, does anyone know where to start?

Avoid eye area if you have sensitive skin.
Start off with a small amount every other night and build up to every night.
Leave it to soak in for 5 minutes before applying anything over the top.
You do need to be careful with it but I've found it the best product I've ever used.

Loulou0 · 10/01/2018 20:33

I use Environ retinol if you are looking for a brand recommendation x

great advice. thank you. What % is a good place to start?

Any good recommendations of where to buy please?

Following with interest.

Any experience with The Ordinary retinal products?

FartsMeanHearts · 10/01/2018 21:33

I have recently started it too.

I purchase Retinol deface by indeed labs they sell it in boots - it’s cheap and not as highly concentrated as the ones with an actual number (eg 1%). I’ve started with every other day alongside by BHA but some nights I don’t use anything to give my skin a break.

It’s been around 2 weeks and i have got a severe explosion of spots all on my cheeks, apparently this is to be expected!

FartsMeanHearts · 10/01/2018 21:35

*Retinol reface by Indeed Labs

I’ve also bought Paula’s choice 1% booster Retinol and the ordinary retinoid 2% I will use one of them once I’ve finished the indeed labs one as they are stronger and my skin will have adjusted to Retinol by then - I hope!

FartsMeanHearts · 10/01/2018 21:37

Aargh need to stop hitting post so quickly!

Check out the skinacea website it’s got excellent info on Retinol

BagelGoesWalking · 10/01/2018 21:43

Start with the most gentle like THIS just a couple of times a week to check reactions. No other treatment after, just moisturise/oil

A Retinoid is not the same as a Retinol. 1% is much stronger than 2%. You must use a good quality sunscreen daily.

lovemylover · 10/01/2018 21:58

Reface by indeed is lovely, but i too would like a pure retinol,
Looked at the ordinary but its a bit confusing, they have retinoid in squalane, but read reviews that squalane stays on your face or doesnt soak in
Any recommendations welcome here too

NotTheQueen · 10/01/2018 22:29

I’ve got the reface but I’d like something that’s going to up the anti - I was ignoring the eye creases but the crease on the bridge of nose feels like it’s arrived with flashing lights and a marching band.

So would anything from the Ordinary tackle the eye creases and send the marching band packing? Or should I get a Botox expert on speed dial?

BagelGoesWalking · 11/01/2018 01:11

Lovemylover the best starter Retinoid is thiss*. There's also a version in Squalane oil. Some people love Squalane, others don't do it's really trial and error.

user1466690252 · 11/01/2018 07:33

Thanks everyone. I do have botox, but only 2 areas and Im trying to use something to not need anymore areas. I will do some research on all your recommendations later when the kids are in school. thank you

I use medik8 retinoate. 8 times stronger than retinol, no sensitivity (for all skin types) and you can wear it day and night. It’s truly amazing stuff I’ve noticed such a difference. (Before I used retinol reface and la Roche posay). Its expensive but it has vitamin A and vitamin C so no need for other serums. Just slap it on under spf in the morning and good to go. I think you can only buy it from beauty salons however..

Bagelgoeswalking thank you, i have ordered some of this, i dont have too many wrinkles but mostly around mouth and eyes, not very deep really, but i hate seeing them

lovemylover · 11/01/2018 09:53

Having some Botox this morning though, mainly to stop my eyes looking tired, hoping it will lift them a bit

Retinol (Vitamin A) is now paired with B Vitamins as it seems to work better, according to research. So you could try a Vitamin AB Night Serum. That's what I'm using (can't remember the brand and I'm at work so can't check). I have noticed quite a big difference in my skin since using it. I found my skin a bit pink on about Day 5, but fine since then.

1% is much stronger than 2%

How can that be?

FartsMeanHearts · 11/01/2018 20:55

Retinol is not the same as retinoid

The Ordinary state that their Granactive retinoid 2% is about as powerful as 1% Retinol however I am not convinced. They aren’t really comparable as they’re not the same ingredient IYSWIM

lovemylover · 11/01/2018 21:24

This seems strange to me too, surely 2% is stronger than 1%
Anyway i have ordered the 2% emulsion, my sister wants me to order some for her, but she has much more sensitive skin than me

CastielIsMyAngel · 11/01/2018 22:22

1% is much stronger than 2%

I'm confused by this because a skincare expert on TV last night said start off low,.like 1% and eventually work up to 5% so was she talking bollocks?

FartsMeanHearts · 11/01/2018 23:06

😳

You guys need to re-read the thread.

🙈

Victoria Health's website states this:

The Ordinary’s portfolio of retinoids includes the following formulations:

Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane (High Strength, No to Low Irritation)

Retinol 0.2% in Squalane (Low Strength, Moderate Irritation)

Retinol 0.5% in Squalane (Moderate Strength, High Irritation)

Retinol 1% in Squalane (High Strength, Very High Irritation)
