You can move onto Retinol after Retinoid, I guess it's a personal choice depending on what your skin needs. I don't actually use either of them! I have had stupidly reactive skin most of my life. It's only recently that it seems to have settled down (with products I've recently found) but I'm not sure it like acids very much!

I got really interested in the Ordinary and how it all worked, as it was such a different concept and, to me, much better to be able to pick a product that doesn't have fillers, perfume etc that can irritate. I've learnt so much from the Ordinary FB about skincare in general - and hydration in particular, which has really helped my skin. I just got so worried seeing so many ppl wanting to dive into retinols etc without understanding it can really mess up your skin if you're not careful.

La Roche Posay Toleriane Dermo Cleanser or Avène Extremely Gentle Cleanser are two good ones. But any low or non foaming cleanser would be good.

SophieLion · 20/01/2018 13:42

Thanks Bagel. I can get either of those cleansers at a pharmacy here.

So what products do you use on your face if it's very sensitive/reactive?

hollyisalovelyname · 20/01/2018 14:07

Is Liquid Gold more for acne/ spot prone skin rather than an anti ageing product?

SophieLion · 20/01/2018 14:54

As I understand it, Liquid Gold is supposed to improve skin tone and brightness because it contains ingredients (like glycolic acid) which resurface the skin (deep exfoliation) and get rid of old skin cells. Which I why I believe it should be good for acne/spot scars but also good for skin ageing generally (I think it's also supposed to help with pigmentation and sun damage).

SophieLion · 20/01/2018 14:55

And probably is good for spots because it gets rid of the old skin cells which clog up pores (at least I'm hoping it will help with that! Wink)

stayfit · 20/01/2018 20:10

Paula's choice has many AHA/BHA much cheaper and found them effective. You can also order sample size ones from her site to try it out.

Huntinginthedark · 20/01/2018 23:06

Paula's choice makes me feel uncomfortable
It's a bit too much like Sophie's choice
Only a lighter version obviously Shock

BagelGoesWalking · 21/01/2018 00:03

SophieLion I used some Ordinary things for a few months (Buffet, Caffeine, Ascorbyl Tetra Vit C) which I liked. Then my skin had a bit of a freak out - not necessarily because of TO - so back to Aveeno.

With help and advise of several ppl online, I'm now using Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner. Scinic All In One Ampoule (honey) and Rosette Ceramide Gel. All of them are to increase hydration, protect and nourish and good ceramides to build up the skin barrier. (Didn't know any of these things 8 months ago!).

I have to thank TO for getting me into all this, I find it incredibly interesting and so much to learn about ingredients etc.

I've just started to add Cosrx Galactomyces to my routine and haven't had any reactions, yay! I'll only see results, if any, long term but I'd like to try a few things with fermented ingredients, which the Galactomyces (or galactic mice, as someone called it Grin).

babyinthacorner · 21/01/2018 00:10

Placemarking - great thread 👍

BagelGoesWalking · 21/01/2018 00:11

Meant to add - what I'm using now has made my skin feel so calm and comfortable - it's a complete revelation to me - as someone who's skin always felt dry, itchy, eczema prone.

It's great to find products which aren't full of potentially irritating things like fragrance and alcohol and to be able to try out some new things too.

eloisesparkle · 21/01/2018 08:59

As someone who bought Squalene from The Ordinary and finds it awful to use as it is far too greasy, what Retinoid should I buy ?
Should I just buy Buffet instead ?
I got my GP to prescribe Retin A but found it really harsh on my upper lip which I get waxed. It scabbed over. Dreadful !
My problem is with wrinkles around the mouth.

OneMoStep · 21/01/2018 09:21

I watched this last night. It was okay, but pretty limited in the scientific experiments that were carried out.

I also worry about the popularity of retinols etc. I don't believe for a minute that the skincare industry particularly cares about the health of my skin, and I'm concerned about the implications of using these products in the medium and longer term.

BluePony · 21/01/2018 11:33

I was surprised at bits of it. I didn't think that mascara would be that noticeable in quality (although Hypnose is good) and I didn't think that cellulite brush would work. Also, why lipgloss? Lipstick is far more popular. Also don't rate Rimmel for longevity and coverage compared to MAC.

BagelGoesWalking · 21/01/2018 11:47

Eloise Try the 2% Emulsion. Very popular for those who don't like the Squalane.

Bagel- where do you buy the Korean stuff? I dabbled in Korean skincare a few years ago, and must admit, liked both the cost, and the feel of it all. I think it has been mainly the textures that put me off The Ordinary. I found both Buffet and Hyaluronic slimy and gloopy and the Vitamin C suspension thing was gritty. I still have the remnants in the cupboard but have gone back to Nip/Fab for acids and other serums for hydration.

The only Ordinary family products I have really rated have been the retinoid 2%, the Opaque photo primer thingy from one of the sister companies, and hylamide subq eye serum (again a sister company)

BagelGoesWalking · 21/01/2018 17:01

I bought my first lot from Yesstyle but I'm going to buy as much UK based from now on. It's more expensive but at least the delivery will be quicker! Most of them offer 10-15% off the 1st order.

Look at Beauty and Seoul or Melon and Starfish. Found another one this morning www,glamourflare.com which had a fairly good range, esp Cosrx. Someone told me about www.maskhouse.co.uk but haven't looked yet.

I've also ordered samples via eBay. Seller is Korea-cosmetics-samples, but also roseroseshop and iamlove-shop. They're pretty good as it's free postage so, as long as it's under £15 I can buy single items in multiple orders, IYSWIM.

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/01/2018 17:26

I think Korea still tests on animals. The ordinary doesn't and has said it has no intentions of selling in shops in China while they require animal testing.

JoyceDivision · 21/01/2018 18:35

I'm (easily) confused Grin

So, should I not bother with a daytime moisturiser, but replace it with spf cream and focus on a night cream for anti-aging /face fixing properties?

SophieLion · 21/01/2018 18:44

Thanks for all the info Bagel. My skin can be a bit dehydrated and sensitive but I don’t think it’s too bad (never been itchy or eczema-prone). I do try to increase hydration though, especially on forehead and around my eyes.

What are Cosrx Galactomyces? Never heard of them. Google suggests they are anti-wrinkle as well as whitening.

Blue Pony - I have dry body-brushed for years and I think it works so wasn’t that surprised by the results. Saying that I generally eat really well, drink lots of water, exercise etc. I think all these things are important for good skin - nothing can be taken in isolation. I do like lipgloss though GrinWink

I’ve ordered The Ordinary Retinoid 2% (very reasonably priced too) and the Pixi Glow Tonic so looking forward to trying them out. I think I’ll try these for a few months and see how I go.

Joyce - as regards SPF, I think the general recommendation is to wear it every day over moisturiser (but someone more knowledgeable may well correct me on this point). My moisturiser has an SPF 30 in it but when it’s sunny outside (I’m in a Mediterranean country so most days!) or if I’m skiing then I always put on SPF 50 on top. Yes, all this is quite confusing and takes a lot of time to figure out and decide on products etc! There’s so much choice.

JoyceDivision · 21/01/2018 19:21

Thanks Sophie I'll play it safe and stick with my spf moisturiser!

Fluffycloud Actually, many of the major Korean brands don't test on animals. Quite different from China. I've checked quite a few websites and blogs, so I hope I'm correct. stylestory.com.au/2017/06/k-beauty-brands-that-dont-test-on-animals/

Galactomyces are supposed to be anti-wrinkle, whitening (not bleaching but evening out texture/pigmentation), can help acne/spots by fighting bacteria, hydration, getting that "glow".

SophieLion · 22/01/2018 08:50

Thanks for the info Bagel. Perhaps something I'll look at in the future. Think I've bought enough new products for now to try out Grin

KeepOn -* I don't body brush sensitive areas like the chest. The brushes can also be quite stiff and hard when new but they soften up a bit plus your skin gets used to it. Just take it a bit easy/gently at the beginning.

SophieLion · 22/01/2018 09:34

Liquid Gold update: used it for the second time yesterday evening. I've had a small spot for a couple of days on my forehead (and my spots usually like to hang around for a while). This morning the spot has completely gone! No sign of it! Can't see where it was. Can't feel where it was (no small bump or any raised skin). Am pretty impressed SmileSmile

(Of course the flannels and acid toner which I've been using for a week could also be playing a role).
