And which The Ordinary retinol should I order?

Report
BanyanTree · 12/01/2018 08:37

Jelly, I use Environ. I have been there and done that with every brand under the sun in the past. It is the only thing I have used that has had a significant impact on my skin. I actually get people coming up to me asking what I have done to my skin as it glows. You have to find a salon that stocks it and can advise you as you go through levels of potency.

Banyan which moisturiser do you use in their range? Sounds amazing!

stayfit · 12/01/2018 10:34

@BanyanTree looks like it contains vitamin A which is retinol. Guess that is the only thing that works. Your moisturizer was a treatment in itself? Thanks for sharing. Taking professional advice is definitely way to go I guess.

@SavageBeauty73 I've started using retinol from The Ordinary this year and spent a while looking at which to use. After watching some Sam in the City YouTube videos I started with a low percentage retinol and have slowly worked up.

I use it at night, started every other night and once I got to every night, then moved up a strength of retinol to get my skin used to it. They now have retinol in 'squalane' that is supposed to be less irritating on your skin.

@atrociousCircumstance I use iS Clinical serums as prescribed by my dermatologist. They are pricey but I've seen good results and they use a Visia face imaging thing so can see the evidence
I use Pro heal serum in the morning which has vitamin c amongst other ingredients and Poly Vitamin at night which has retinol in it (plus lots of other active ingredients)

My understanding is that serums penetrate more deeply in to the skin (as they don't have to be moisturising). They have more active ingredients. Then you use SPF over the top in the day.

Nadine Baggot (Former Hello Beauty Editor) says the same, she layers serums but says don't spend on a moisturiser use a cheap
one if you need to or just SPF.

For poc with middle eastern to Indian skin oxidation is the biggest concern and most foundations oxidise. It’s actually better to avoid the more expensive brands (Bobbi brown is the exception for lighter shades) and go towards the cheaper Indian brands here. Lakme etc.

The study’s on moisturizers aren’t scientifically viable studies . The show confused dryness and dehydration . The high end moisturizer retails ag £20 not £43. There was no mention of any of the many factors that influence skin hydration. Nivea is full of nasty ingredients . Moisturizer was never intended to prevent wrinkles .

The list goes on .

Also Sali Hughes has said many of her comments have been edited out

Read Refinery 29s article on it . Complete shambles .

I see a consultant dermatologist who specialises in cosmetic dermatology (Dr Emma Wedgeworth from Dr Sam Bunting's clinic) and she recommended that I only used moisturiser in the AM if I felt dry, otherwise SPF only (on top of my prescription AHA) was fine. She recommended using a very light moisturiser in the evening if I didn't use anything in the morning, after applying my retinoid

She stripped out all the serums and acid toners and what not and simplified my routine massively. I use moisturiser very sparingly now

This is the problem, isn’t it, all the conflicting advice everywhere. With everyone being different it can be hard to work out what works for you.

Cherry Healy is welcoming comments on her Instagram page for feedback about the show. Lots of similar comments on there too.

The message given re. Retinols/retinoids was very dangerous. The number of ppl on a FB group talking about it, following the programme, and obviously not understanding it at all, is astounding. If that's a snapshot of what's going on around the country, I think it's worrying.

The trouble is that ppl get snippets of info about something, rush out to buy without doing their own research and get burnt - literally in this case.

I agree about the retinol i rushed to get some and used it way too much, my chest and neck didn't like it at all, very red and inflamed. now i only use it 3 times aweek, so far it's much better, bit of peeling on my face but that is normel.

I didn't think the programme actually said don't use moisturiser, nor that it said it did any damage (other than to your wallet), I thought it just tried three and showed that only two actually increased moisture in the skin (of the very low number of people they tested).

It was very limited in the number of things they tested in every section.

They got the price of o e if the moisturiser wrong too.

Embryoliss is never £40+.

notanurse, I do not go to a Dermatologist. I visit a local salon that does skin and beauty treatments. I think you need to call up a few local reputable beauty places and see if they stock and use the products for treatments. I live in a small town and I have 2 salons specialising in it.

My skin is very sensitive and I started my level 1 with the least Vit A in it then moved up every few months. I use the Environ AVST (orange) moisturiser and am now on level 5. I was very cynical at first when they first introduced me to it as I have tried everything on my skin and have always been dry, greasy and spotty. If I use it religiously my skin is immaculate. I even get people I vaguely know asking me what I have done to my skin as it is very glowy. As mentioned upthread they scanned my skin for damage and then again after 3 months and there was a noticeable difference.

My moisturiser is about £40. Once I saw the benefits I ended up buying a lot of the range and even upgrading to the Youth EssentiA which is a lot more expensive. I don't mind. I am not into clothes and stuff but will climb mountains for nice skin and hair. The price is very comparable to say Clinique and Clarins but IMO having used it the comparison is laughable. I don't have salon treatments with Environ. I bought Environ masks and a steamer and do them myself.

Thanks Delatron and Banyan Smile

Any thoughts on cleansers/facial wash? If I try something gentle I break out, but skin washes which control spots dry my skin out...I’m constantly swinging between those two states.

Report
BanyanTree · 14/01/2018 09:41

I don't use Environ fat wash. I like it, but think I can get away with other cheaper stuff. At the moment I am using Garnier Micellar Gel wash which seems quite gentle.

BanyanTree · 14/01/2018 09:41

Face wash, not fat wash LOL

Grin Fat wash - is that a new kind of oil cleansing, but with lard?

Thanks Banyan I will check that Garnier one out.
