I moved to Scotland last year. I have never been so cold. It's -6 where I am today. Beautifully sunny but freezing! Any suggestions for warm costs please? Thank you. Budget is about £100

What sort of coat? An I-have-to-go-into-an-office-in-this coat or I-could-climb-a-mountain-in-this-anorak?

Fluffyogabunny · 08/01/2018 15:52

Coat rather than anorak please. From research think my budget is bit low

Something for doing school run and going to work in so relatively smart

They're not high fashion and maybe even a bit of a cliche but Lands End down coats are pretty warm and are reduced at the moment - and there's an extra discount/free postage offer, so just within your budget. For example (there are others on their site):

Thank you. Looks promising. Ideally I'd like something below my knees...I'm 5"6

Hi OP,
I am out in all weather's and buy coats from regatta they are fantastic.always waterproof, windproof.and the sales are still on.absolutely brilliant.I'm always warm even in minus conditions.

Tika77 · 08/01/2018 16:37

I don’t think it exists. At least not for me. I forked out for a Marmont coat last year, 85 % down. It was supposed to be very toasty but I need to layer up at 3 C. I’m always miserably cold though. The warmest things are skiing jackets. If you find a long one of those, please let me know. :-)

florascotianew · 08/01/2018 16:46

Well, there's this: www.landsend.co.uk/Womens_Long_Down_Coat/pp/P_38062.html

I'm in Scotland too and would previously have recommended another American company, LLBean I have a fab woollen coat lined with black posh pile from them that's over 10 years old and a long padded coat, more practical, that has lasted almost as well, even after much more everyday wear and tear [[http://global.llbean.com/shop/H2OFF-Primaloft-Lined-Long-Coat/83176.html#start=1. But the pound is so low against the dollar at the moment that LLBean has become very expensive for UK customers. And some say that the quality is not what it was, though I was pleased with a cotton sweatshirt I purchased from them last year.

Earlier this year, I purchased a Lands End padded coat, similar to this: www.landsend.co.uk/Womens_Squall_Stadium_Coat/pp/P_38058.html?cgid=12091
Stylish it is definitely not, but it's warm, wind-and-water resistant and very practical.

FoofFighter · 08/01/2018 16:51

I'm in the north and it was -6 and sunny here too maybe you aren't far from me.

I have found going to somewhere like Go Outdoors (Inverness closest for me) and trying on every coat is the best thing. Work friendly coats are just not warm enough. You definitely need something longer and Trepassy.. sorry!

countingdown · 08/01/2018 16:56

I bought a North Face coat and it is the warmest coat I have ever worn. I bought mine second hand from a fb selling page but would definitely pay full price as I have been living in it this winter! -8 today where we are.

SingingSands · 08/01/2018 17:02

I’ve got a Marmont Montreal coat, which I got in GoOutdoors about 3 years ago.

I can wear it to commute to work, with just a dress underneath. It is deliciously warm, especially if walking. I bought it because I was sick of standing waiting on public transport in howling winds/torrential rain/freezing temps.

I love it and wear it almost daily from November to April. Here’s a link, don’t think I paid that much though when I got mine.

SingingSands · 08/01/2018 17:06

Forgot to mention an important feature- pockets! Two external pockets for stuffing hands deep into when trudging through the rain (with hood up I’m good and cosy and dry and seriously smug at everyone battling with brollies) and two internal pockets, one of which zips. I don’t need a handbag for work to be honest!

Oh - great length too. I was out all day in it yesterday and DH was frozen because he only had a short coat on whereas my bum and thighs were toasty and I could have walked for another hour or two easily!

TacoFlavouredKisses · 08/01/2018 17:14

Get thee a duvet coat, stat: www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/product/women-seamless-down-long-coat-402250.html

joystir59 · 08/01/2018 17:16

Only warm garments outdoor hiking gear, get yourself a fleece and a good quality Goretex jacket, preferably a man's one as they are made of moredurable warmer stuff and have LOADS of useful zipped pockets

HLBug · 08/01/2018 17:27

I’m also in the frozen north. North Face is your friend. I bought a knee length (bum covering) one 6 years ago when we moved up from the tropical in comparison central belt and it’s been money well spent. Unfortunately the best ones are more than your £100 budget - think mine was about £300? But my god it’s been worn. So if you can stretch further it will be a very good investment.

KnittingPearl · 08/01/2018 17:34

Wool. I have just spent Christmas in Canada with family and it stayed below -25 most of the time I was there. They wear layers of wool, and when I asked what I should bring to wear - ski jacket or wool coat - they said wool immediately. I found mine on the sale rack in a charity shop so it was ridiculously cheap, but even new it is worth it and will last years, and look smart.

SparklyLights · 08/01/2018 17:36

I had a Lans End down coat (just below the knee). It was very warm.

PNGirl · 08/01/2018 17:52

I would second a down coat from Uniqlo.

Jellycatspyjamas · 08/01/2018 20:42

I bought a Tog 24 coat on mumsnet recommendation and it's wonderfully warm - may not be as smart as you'd like for work but it's perfect for the school run. I'm in Scotland too though I'm native and am used to the cold.

Toffeelatteplease · 08/01/2018 21:42

Admittedly I'm down south so im possibly not qualified to comment.... I am notoriously cold though ( I lost a load of weight a year or so ago and haven't been warm since)

I don't find uniqlo down that impressive. They are not water or wind proof. Great as a mid layer but not as a top layer. Not terribly impressed with the waterproofing on regatta either having had a pac a mac and a insulated coat both leak through on the neck. Love wool but decent wool coats don't come with a hood and I find a hood makes a massive difference to warmth

I've had nice jackets from trespass before i lost weight but ive not like anything there since

A bit like fooffighter, I recently raided mountain warehouse. Only I did it online after checking out the offerings from blacks and a couple of the others. I ordered about 5 coats in the end. I kept this one and it's gorgeous really warm, and properly waterproof although it's on the knee not below it and a little above budget. I looks goo though. I unexpectedly talked DD into this one she says it's also super warm although it looks more functional it is within your budget. There were other options but none were windproof and where we live is windy.

I love tog 24, their fleeces and down are gorgeous (down is not as cool looking as uniqlo but warmer.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 08/01/2018 21:53

Another vote for Landsend. I have a long down coat and while not even slightly glamorous it's like wrapping yourself in a huge cosy quilt. It has rubbed cuffs inside the sleeves so no draughts, is fairly waterproof and has lasted me three years now. They rate them on temperature so you can pick from the warmest ones rather than risk a light weight one. If you can still pick one up in the sale you should be close to your budget.

ClementineWardrobe · 08/01/2018 22:59

Got my lands end long down hyperdry coat for £130 in the sale a couple of days ago, and it's incredibly warm, goes just over halfway down my shins and I'm 5ft 6
I had a down coat from them for a few years now but just switched to the hyperdry so I can wear it in the never ending rain. Also recommend heat tech from Uniqlo: I have the warmest ones. I'm not in Scotland I'm just permanently cold and walking dogs in the rain.

ClementineWardrobe · 08/01/2018 23:03

www.landsend.co.uk/Womens_Long_Down_Coat/pp/P_38062.html

Also theyre responsible retailer when it comes to acquiring the feathers and down.

TheHoundsofLove · 09/01/2018 06:49

I'm adding another vote for Lands End - I've got both a down coat and a couple of the Squall coats (I'm outside a lot and walk or cycle almost everywhere) and I love them all. The quality is unbeatable and they keep me toasty warm and/or dry whatever the weather.
