Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEWish since previous threads:

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

JANUARY 2018: Thread 11! Shock we're getting old. A recap of The Snailies categories for those still meaning to get round to them:

🐌🐌 THE SNAILIES 2017 🐌🐌

Wink The Well Hello There - newest and latest find that gets your motor running

Angry The Flusher- money spent on this product would have been better put to use by flushing it down the toilet

Halo The Jack & Rose- the product you’ll never let go of because there’s plenty of fucking space for the two of you on that piece of wood. Damn you, James Cameron, for breaking my poor little tween heart.

Biscuit The LTB- it all seemed so promising, everything was going so great, then they turned out to be a narcissist gaslighting bastard

Envy The Child Prodigy- that one product that’s annoyingly good and isn’t afraid to be smug about it

Smile The Worker Bee- never the centre of attention but has been steadily chugging along like no other

Hmm The Troll- the one where you repeatedly asked, ‘Is this doing anything?’, but continued to use it anyway…

Confused The Flabbergaster- that one product or technique that wasn’t really supposed to be used like that or delivered well beyond your non-existent expectations

Blush The Sinner- oh, admit it because we’re all guilty of it, what did you do or use that wasn’t all that sensible like take an acid bath and had the disastrous results you really knew to expect

Mint Ooh never tried them on the oven. Will do that. They are very nice. I've a bad headache atm so can't type much. Will do my routine tomorrow if that's ok, it's very basic still.

Skinful I think Boots had an offer on the Hand Chemistry Cream atm.

EnidButton · 08/01/2018 22:30

Skinful 3rd off www.boots.com/the-chemistry-hand-chemistry-100ml-10164352 They do a smaller one if you just want to try it first.

botemp · 08/01/2018 22:53

Definitely not a dermatologist, Ooh! So I generally steer people away from Liz Earle as it's full of common irritants but if it's not bothering you currently carry on and re-evaluate if you wish to repurchase when it runs out.

Sunscreen before everything, priority wise. Make sure you're tolerating it well and it works for you before introducing anything else, at least two weeks of use. Build up BHA use slowly 1-2x a week at first then build up to 2-3x a week.

Sunscreen is the last step of your skincare routine, after moisturiser. Ideally leave it for a bit before applying makeup (of wearing).

No problem Enid thank you. I hope your head feels better.

oohloolalala · 09/01/2018 09:11

Thank you botemp that's really helpful. What sort of ranges of cleansers/moisturisers are irritant free?

Pupsiecola · 09/01/2018 10:09

I'm behind. Lovely skiing holiday. Planned surgery on one foot yesterday. Going to be a long recovery but needed doing.

I am loving the Drunk Elephant Vitamin C. Apparently DE is coming to Space NK soon? Also, Dr Sam has a private FB group now. These may have been mentioned. I'm going to quickly catch up before a nap (no sleep last night).

A rather late Happy New Year to you all X

botemp · 09/01/2018 12:05

I don't really recommend any ranges per se, ooh. For the basics I generally point towards French/Swiss/German pharmacy and it's usually different products from the 'intolerant skins' ranges. Bugger it, I thought I had a common irritants info sheet up, but it appears not. Will get to writing one sometime.

Welcome backs Pups! . Eek on the SpaceNK, it'll be very pricey then I fear, but at least they do decent offers often. If the FB group is private, does that mean it's invite only? Not that I'd sign up with FB for it (principles and all that) so someone will just have to share the interesting titbits on here.

Hi, new to this thread, but back from a long break after Mumsnet induced anxiety, so please be kind!

I treated myself to a beauty advent calendar, and then proceeded to pick and choose, along with a virus over Christmas and winter, my skin is now paying for it. I have a lovely skin breakout on my chin that never became white heads, and is now a bit inflamed and scaly nice.

I have decide to pare back skincare.

AM micellar water
EL daywear moisturiser
SPF 50

PM cream cleanser (currently one from Soap and Glory)
LRP Night cream in the small blue bottle

My main problem is addiction to beauty products, always wanting the next best thing!

Things that agree with my skin are:

Vichy Aqualia Thermal serum, been through bottles of this, don't know why I bought anything else.

Pixi Glow Tonic, though I am not using at the moment due to said horrible breakout.

Micellar water and a cream cleanser rather than balms or oils.

I have got to that typical 40 plus skin of going from oily skin, to dehydrated, oily/combination skin.

I have investigated retinoids and vitamin C but really don't know what I am doing.

I have tried The Ordinary, most recently hydralonic acid and the niamcimide and zinc, and found both really balled, so hated them instantly!

oohloolalala · 09/01/2018 12:42

Thank you botemp, I'll finish reading past threads and info sheets before I ask anything else in case it's been covered! I bought some murad sunscreen today so will start using that.

JDSTER · 09/01/2018 18:59

Here’s a link to a recent Telegraph article on Vitamin C with embedded video with Dr Sam.

Ollivander84 · 09/01/2018 22:59

I have my eyebrow tattoo top up booked. Excited but also not looking forward to the pain Grin

Skinfulnappies46 · 10/01/2018 13:05

I will definitely try the hand chemistry but after frugal January is over. Need to tighten all belts especially beauty.

mintmagnummm · 10/01/2018 14:43

Just an update for you. Spoke with my gp today and she's happy for me to try the 900mg of aspirin with codydramol when I have a migraine attack as long as I've eaten, if I haven't eaten I'm to take a lansoprazole 30mins before taking the aspirin. She said that I had lovely skin and I was glowing, which was lovely to hear considering I have quite a few breakouts at mo

miffy2 · 10/01/2018 15:14

I too picked up the Hand Chemistry hand cream as it was on offer. I have used a couple from that brand before and enjoyed using them although can't say I saw huge improvement in my skin texture. I am committing to using this every night for a month or two and hopefully it will make a difference.

EnidButton · 10/01/2018 17:22

Can't post routine again today as I'm literally doubled over with period pain and it's all I can think about. Really heavy period. It needs to chill out long enough for me to wash my hair.

hasnt caused any major break outs though which is good. The Vichy grey clay mask seems to be fine on my chin so slapped some more on there about 15 mins ago. Then the cramps and pain started so it hasn't been washed off yet. Sure it'll be fine.

EnidButton · 10/01/2018 17:22

Ooh that was moany

EnidButton · 10/01/2018 17:30

And Bo FlowersBrewCake 🐌💗👑 reckon you deserve these today.

Ollivander84 · 10/01/2018 17:33

Just had my MRI and they decided to tell me they were doing it with contrast dye. All done now and to wait for results

botemp · 10/01/2018 21:23

Thanks Enid, I needed that. Flowers for you, hope the pain passes quickly, I'm on the last day of mine, it was a strange one Confused

Sorry, @VeggieforJan, I'm not ignoring you, I thought I had responded already. It's good that you're paring back until the inflammation goes down. Are these all products that are normally fine for you to use? With the exception of the LRP night cream (I assume that's the Toleriane Nuit) it's all fragranced which can be further irritating. Not everyone is sensitive to fragrance but it would be something to watch out for when your skin is less than optimal.

I can't help with the cycle of not wanting to try new things, I think generally participants of this thread have found them becoming more uninterested as soon as they have a routine that's working well, but ignoring bloggers, newsletters, etc. should probably help temper it somewhat.

Your GP sounds lovely, mint, good to hear she's given the go ahead and with helpful guidelines.

I think TO Retinol in Squalane and I are having issues, it's nearly finished so no love lost but I'm going to keep it out of my routine for a week or two and see if that makes a difference or not. Otherwise, it's hormones and I'll go bug my GP or Gyn about it but aside from my skin nothing is really acting up hormonally.

Anyone watch The Truth About Looking Good? 5 minutes in. Someone has just asked "oh, so you can bypass the price and look at the ingredients list?"...

BagelGoesWalking · 10/01/2018 21:39

Haven't watched it yet (recorded) and already lots of ppl talking about Retinol on a group I'm in. Oh god, I can just imagine 1000s of ppl slapping on the strongest % without a care in the world.

EnidButton · 10/01/2018 21:58

Which channel was it on please? Hopefully can watch on catch up.

bo it's calmed down now thank you. DH brought some painkillers home and I'm pinned to a hot water bottle. Flowers Hope tomorrow is a better day for you. It's an odd month, January.

Hot water bottles and flannels are the most comforting things. If anyone isn't using a flannel on their face yet, get on it. Trust me.

Glad your doctor said it was ok Mint. Hope it helps.

Pupsiecola · 10/01/2018 22:26

I used to use a hot water bottle when I had endometriosis, pre hysterectomy. You are right Enid; so comforting. Hugs to those suffering atm.

The show was on BBC1.

No pharmacy shelf pics Bo. Sorry about that. No LRP either! Couldn't believe it!!

I have just, on Sunday, starting Retinol. First time ever, apart from LRP Redmeric. Am taking it c easy, twice a week. Is 0.5% Neostrata. I bought it months and months ago. I'm not sure if I'd choose this particular one of buying now. Caroline Hirons reviewed it as being too strong?! Anyway, I figured as my skin is stable and I've not tried anything new for a while I'd give it a go. I've been afraid to step into retinol territory but I'm a good candidate. What are others using?

Pupsiecola · 10/01/2018 22:29

Sorry for typos. Am shattered and on 3 different full strength painkillers.

botemp · 10/01/2018 22:45

Flowers for you too Pupsie, hope the recovery is quick.

I'm on TO Retinol 5% in Squalane at the moment but it hasn't done anything spectacular and I'm now suspecting it of encouraging the precarious balance it's been in for a few weeks now. Having used a version of TO Retinol for the last year or so it really does feel like the thing lagging behind in my routine.

I'm getting the Medik8 R-Retinoate next, it uses Retinol Retinoate which is also what Verso uses which gave me good results in the facial serum and I'm still devoted to the eye serum. Dr. Sam also recently recommended the Medik 8 R-R as an OTC option specifically on the back of research that's been coming out about Retinol Retinoate recently so I'm hopeful.
