Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEWish since previous threads:

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

JANUARY 2018: Thread 11! Shock we're getting old. A recap of The Snailies categories for those still meaning to get round to them:

🐌🐌 THE SNAILIES 2017 🐌🐌

Wink The Well Hello There - newest and latest find that gets your motor running

Angry The Flusher- money spent on this product would have been better put to use by flushing it down the toilet

Halo The Jack & Rose- the product you’ll never let go of because there’s plenty of fucking space for the two of you on that piece of wood. Damn you, James Cameron, for breaking my poor little tween heart.

Biscuit The LTB- it all seemed so promising, everything was going so great, then they turned out to be a narcissist gaslighting bastard

Envy The Child Prodigy- that one product that’s annoyingly good and isn’t afraid to be smug about it

Smile The Worker Bee- never the centre of attention but has been steadily chugging along like no other

Hmm The Troll- the one where you repeatedly asked, ‘Is this doing anything?’, but continued to use it anyway…

Confused The Flabbergaster- that one product or technique that wasn’t really supposed to be used like that or delivered well beyond your non-existent expectations

Blush The Sinner- oh, admit it because we’re all guilty of it, what did you do or use that wasn’t all that sensible like take an acid bath and had the disastrous results you really knew to expect

I’m in love with the bioderma shower oil, I got a massive 1 litre on amazon for about a tenner. It doesn’t foam for me but I just use my hands.

That’s a shame about Eucerin Enid I’ve not had any problems with it and I’m very prone to getting those annoying little whiteheads if my skin doesn’t like something.

Off to check out Beautyjoint now.....

JDSTER · 02/02/2018 18:22

I find the Eucerin feels very light but makes me oily (more oily) if I use it in the morning so it’s night time or weekend only (and I much prefer LRP moisturiser I’ve got for night time) I won’t repurchase.

mintmagnummm · 02/02/2018 19:08

Enid I found it actually made my skin feel more dry and itchy than my usual shower gel. I get white patches come up on my legs after a shower, no idea what they are?! 🤔
Oh no that's a shame, like user I've had no problems either and my skin is VERY prone to tiny whiteheads when it doesn't like a product! I however cannot use the lrp moisturiser so just shows you how everyone's skin reacts different

EnidButton · 02/02/2018 19:42

I did ear a pizza a couple of days ago whilst out so it could be the wheat but before that I thought it was a little too heavy. I'm not sure. Only been using it at night so I'll just wait a week or two and try it again.

Don't know what the white patches could be Mint, eczema and psoriasis both present as white patches initially. Couldn't be that could it? Maybe it was just too drying if it was a gel that foamed up. The oil is quite soothing.

mintmagnummm · 02/02/2018 21:06

Enid sorry the white patches weren't from the bioderma shower gel, I get them regardless of what I use it seems, I read somewhere it could be poor circulation but I don't know how that relates to them coming up after a shower. I might try the shower oil.

yongnian · 02/02/2018 21:19

Thanks user don't suppose you know which shade you tried? I go from pale yellow-toned tan (difficult to describe) in winter through many shades darker depending how much sun I'm in...so have been looking at the yellow-toned shades.

userallusedup · 02/02/2018 21:45

Yong I am pale yellow too Grin this is the one I got

www.victoriahealth.com/product/Coverage-Foundation-with-SPF15-21Y-Medium/12389

It sounded perfect but it was just a bit too yellow. Looking at their shade range though I can’t see which one would have suited me, I didn’t want a pink toned one but the light medium neutral looked far too pale. I was going to buy that one and mix but couldn’t be bothered in the end.

Pupsiecola · 03/02/2018 09:24

Does anyone have any experience with Yasumi products?

penny14 · 03/02/2018 10:12

Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice re The Ordinary products. I contacted them with pictures and my concerns (ageing & hormonal acne) for a suggested routine and they came back with the following - pic hopefully attached.

Can anyone tell me if I will need a moisturiser and SPF (one product or two separate products?) on top of their suggestions?

Many thanks in advance;

🐌 Fantastic Skincare: Happy Snail Year, Bring Spoons!
yongnian · 03/02/2018 11:02

Ah thanks user, that's the one I've been looking at. In my current winter mode I'm kind of banana coloured so hopefully it will be good!

JDSTER · 03/02/2018 14:59

There’s not a huge amount of love on here for the ordinary penny. A lot of us have tried various combinations and longer term not repurchased. They always seem to ‘prescribe’ a long list of products Confused. Anyway, that’s probably not what you want to hear. Yes you would need a moisturiser and separate SPF (good advice for everyone). I wouldn’t introduce everything they’ve suggested all at once. You won’t know what’s working or if you’re having a reaction to a particular product. Don’t use Vit C with the niacinamide/zinc.

Ollivander84 · 03/02/2018 15:05

Got a primer in my beauty box I haven't tried before so will be giving it a go
Feels very hydrating and smooth but not silicone like https://evelyniona.com/products/primer

userallusedup · 03/02/2018 15:16

Penny I agree with JSDTER about the Ordinary, I actually first came to this thread as I’d over purchased a load of their stuff as it was soooo cheap and I didn’t know what to do with it all. I’ve ended up abandoning their products entirely as found them ineffective in the long run, but I’ve seen a lot of love for them on other threads here so they must work for some people.

I’ll add that primer to my list Olli I’ve ordered some more samples of the REN one so I can keep testing it over a few weeks, so far I like it but the price tag is putting me off. And as I use it over spf 50 I doubt I’m getting any of the skin care benefits that they mention from it, so £50 for ‘just’ a primer seems like a lot.

Ollivander84 · 03/02/2018 15:16

I'll use it tomorrow under makeup and report back Smile

userallusedup · 03/02/2018 15:32

I meant to ask if anyone here has used rapid brow or similar? As it seems to have brow extensions there needs to be SOME hair present even if it’s sparse or fine.

I’ve mentioned before that I tried revitalash (not rapidlash as I mistakenly thought) obviously on lashes, I didn’t really need it as have pretty good lashes but I was hoping it might get them to the stage where I didn’t need to use mascara. It didn’t, as the extra length was blonde instead of dark for some reason and bizarrely I got little black hairs growing under my eyes, even though I didn’t use it on the lower lashes.

With my brows, I wouldn’t care if the hairs were fair as I could dye/extend them and I’m guessing the stuff would be less likely to migrate from my brows. With my lashes the stuff possibly transferred to just under my eyes when I blinked.

Pupsiecola · 03/02/2018 16:54

I have user. I found it did make them appear thicker but you have to use it constantly or the effect stops. It's so expensive though. I'm on a self imposed year of frugality so have bought some castor oil and empty mascara tubes to try for a while. This cost £10 (organic cold press oil, 2 x mascara tubes with mini funnels). I know there's no actual science to back it up, but my rails are thin and I figured it's worth a try.

As an aside, I'm loving the frugality. It's become a bit of a project lol.

Pupsiecola · 03/02/2018 16:55

*tails not rails.

Pupsiecola · 03/02/2018 17:03

I do think it's making a difference. I started using it on 18th January. I use it morning and night. I'm wearing no make up...

mintmagnummm · 03/02/2018 17:15

Has anyone tried the Vichy liftactive eye and lash serum? (I think I've got the right name lol)

userallusedup · 03/02/2018 17:38

Thanks Pupsie rapid brow is not too pricey on amazon (£25ish) so could try and get a bit of growth going and then move onto castor oil. Your brows look great, I’d be happy with that but I’m starting with nothing!

I’ve not tried that Mint but it sounds good, depends on if it’s going to be sting-y or not as sounds like you use it all over the eye. I’m on the lookout for an eye serum (again) I like the alpha h gel but it’s an instant fix type of thing rather than having any long term effects and I like ones that can be used all over the eye (as long as they don’t sting!) as find they migrate anyway.

EnidButton · 03/02/2018 18:07

I use Rapidbrow and like it a lot. I think it helps if you started with dark thick eyebrows. Pupsie is tight though, you have to keep using it really. Not as much as the Rapidlash but once they're where you want them, every couple of days for maintenance. It does get expensive.

EnidButton · 03/02/2018 18:07

By 'started' I mean years so before you ever set eyes on a wax strip or tweezers.

EnidButton · 03/02/2018 18:08

Ffs...

Years ago

Pupsiecola · 03/02/2018 18:16

'Pupsie is tight' Grin.

Yep, as I said, I'm all about saving money in 2018 Smile

userallusedup · 03/02/2018 19:07

Grin nothing wrong with being tight Puspie I’m trying to be more tight (she says eyeing up £50 primer, but at least I’m considering it rather than rushing to buy.)

Enid I did have thicker brows with tails naturally, in fact I had thin brows with tails (which is what I want again) until probably about 3 years ago. I’ll give it a try I think, if it’s getting too too expensive I’ll move onto castor oil.

And please everyone keep your fingers crossed I do not break out in tiny black hairs anywhere other than my brows Shock
