🐌 Fantastic Skincare: Happy Snail Year, Bring Spoons!

Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEWish since previous threads:

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

JANUARY 2018: Thread 11! Shock we're getting old. A recap of The Snailies categories for those still meaning to get round to them:

🐌🐌 THE SNAILIES 2017 🐌🐌

Wink The Well Hello There - newest and latest find that gets your motor running

Angry The Flusher- money spent on this product would have been better put to use by flushing it down the toilet

Halo The Jack & Rose- the product you’ll never let go of because there’s plenty of fucking space for the two of you on that piece of wood. Damn you, James Cameron, for breaking my poor little tween heart.

Biscuit The LTB- it all seemed so promising, everything was going so great, then they turned out to be a narcissist gaslighting bastard

Envy The Child Prodigy- that one product that’s annoyingly good and isn’t afraid to be smug about it

Smile The Worker Bee- never the centre of attention but has been steadily chugging along like no other

Hmm The Troll- the one where you repeatedly asked, ‘Is this doing anything?’, but continued to use it anyway…

Confused The Flabbergaster- that one product or technique that wasn’t really supposed to be used like that or delivered well beyond your non-existent expectations

Blush The Sinner- oh, admit it because we’re all guilty of it, what did you do or use that wasn’t all that sensible like take an acid bath and had the disastrous results you really knew to expect

Thanks Olli I’m very tempted with the REN now, will have to wait till payday now though (I’ve bought quite a bit today already and am ordering the eyebrow stuff now too) so I’ll have to sit on my hands for a while.

64BooLane · 20/01/2018 21:29

Hello, thread regulars. Sorry to jump in; just wondering if anyone here has used the Dennis Gross C+ Collagen Vitamin C serum?

Mine (recently purchased as part of a kit in the Cult Beauty sale) smells horrific, like sharp, stale vinegar. I’m wondering if maybe it’s meant to, and I am just a wimp ...

I remember recoiling at the smell of Good Genes when I first tried it, so I’m obviously at least part wimp, but this is MUCH worse.

botemp · 20/01/2018 21:34

Well it does say 'Gross' in the title Grin. Vitamin C in L-AA form can smell a bit like hot dog water. They use 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid though so no clue how that's supposed to smell, and there's a bit of lactic acid in there, so like Good Genes, pungent smelling. I'd email Cult Beauty just to be sure, if it was bought in the sale it's usually old stock, perhaps it hasn't kept well.

I think Tati on YouTube did an OMG type video with that Korean product, user, didn't see it but those usually end in disaster...

Thanks bo that's much appreciated. No he can't be persuaded unfortunately :-(. He has actually tried that cosrx low ph wash but didn't get on with it. If he uses my avene extremely gentle cleanser will it rinse easily without a residue? Because he will not use a sponge or flannel! No he hasn't tried my cream either, I didn't think of that! I'll look out for the neutrogena too. I've told him about the importance of spf but he point blank refuses unless on holiday! Men!
Should he be using a water spray too? The Vichy or serozinc?
I've got to go to bed now as not feeling very well but I will respond to anything in the morning. Thanks again and I really do appreciate it Thanks

botemp · 20/01/2018 21:48

Hope you feel better soon, mint. I usually rinse off the Avene rather than flannel, it works fine and no residue at all. Get him on the Eucerin and see how he does with that, you can always switch to something lighter if he doesn't enjoy that one. Though I'm not a massive fan of them, it's better than nothing, a moisturiser with SPF in may be a compromise he's willing to make?

Thermal water isn't essential, I like what it does for me but I can live without it. It's not something I think is essential for everyone but very sensitive skin sees benefit from it more than most.

Can we see some before and after pics of DIT eyebrows pls?!

Pupsiecola · 20/01/2018 22:13

DIY

botemp · 20/01/2018 22:19

These are the before and after from the salon I'm looking at (it's a blogger's mum). First pic is before filled in, second once it's before bare, third is tinted and the last is with the extensions. Much less scary looking than the HD brows.

This is a YouTube video of what I’m planning to do. I like this one as she has no tails on her brows like me, and she seems nice and down to earth. I found lots of others but their screechy over excitement put me off somewhat.

m.youtube.com/watch?v=_DGk28c7FJg

I’ll try to remember to post my own before and after pics if it doesn’t go horribly wrong. I could even make a vid and become a YouTube star Grin

Bo I’ve watched that Tati video now, I’ll definitely steer clear of the Korean product!

botemp · 20/01/2018 22:58

I was just watching after x-ing out a lot of the screechers. She appears to be using many of the products you linked and the end result looks a lot better than the screechers using modified eyelashes. The 2hr commitment is shying me away from the DIY route though, knowing me I'll do it once and then never again.

Pupsiecola · 20/01/2018 23:05

Wow. Interesting. I agree, much more natural looking. (I meant show it YOUR before and afters Smile).

userallusedup · 20/01/2018 23:27

Oh I like her too Bo and have ordered the primer thingy that she used now as well. Not getting a glue ring as I think I’d make a mess with that.

One of the others I watched did hers in about 30 mins as she did them less precisely and then trimmed into shape. Another one said as she noticed hairs falling out she touched up straight away rather than waiting till they all fell out and re-doing the whole thing. How long they last seems to vary, one said 3 weeks, another 3-4 days but probably depends on the glue. Hopefully it won’t be TOO time consuming but even if it is, I think I’d prefer to diy as I can always give myself breaks and do it in stages, as long as I don’t leave the house of course Grin

64BooLane · 21/01/2018 00:42

Thanks for replying, bo. It’s def a different type of smell from eau de hot dog water (though I do have another DG product with that smell!) - and not like GG either. It really is just intensely vinegary.

Will email CB. Worth letting them know if nothing else.

mintmagnummm · 21/01/2018 07:43

Thanks bo I'll get him to try the avene cleanser in shower. If he gets a moisturiser with spf which one could that be though? The eucerin doesn't have it and I've never in the past found one I like personally

userallusedup · 21/01/2018 10:46

Mint I saw this one recommended on another thread on here, I’m not sure how ‘good’ it is and only spf 30 but it’s for men (which might make him more likely to use it) and not expensive.

Tantpoke · 21/01/2018 13:42

olli was it you who has used an Elf primer? or am I imagining it, if so did you like it?

mintmagnummm · 21/01/2018 13:46

Oh thank you user I'll check that out

Ollivander84 · 21/01/2018 14:41

Tant - not me! Grin

ElspethFlashman · 21/01/2018 15:09

I've used an Elf eyeshadow primer in the past (the mineral one) and it was fantastic, but haven't used the face ones.

ElspethFlashman · 21/01/2018 15:09

(I love a birra Elf. The brushes are my HGs)

Tantpoke · 21/01/2018 18:06

thanks elspeth Smile it was the elf mineral primer I had my eye on.
I might just give it a go then when mine runs out.

I like the clear silicone gel ones which is what this elf one is and my current one.

Tantpoke · 21/01/2018 18:10

sorry olli I could have sworn it was you

enid how are you getting on with your kitchenaid? Also I have accidentally come across a shampoo which I never in a million years thought would stop my hair being greasy etc but it's Tresseme keratin smooth with Marula Oil. Also leaves the ends of your hair lovely and soft and so much easier to brush through than the anti grease shampoo's.

miffy2 · 21/01/2018 20:45

Any problems buying BR P50 in Liberty London? I have been through a mini size of P50W and am now happily using a mini size of the regular P50. SkinCity no longer deliver to Ireland as well as the UK :( so I thought I would pick up a bottle while in London. Will I get the third degree or not if I explain that I am a 'user'?

JDSTER · 21/01/2018 21:59

miffy I bought P50 in Liberty. I was asked if I’d used before and I answered honestly that I hadn’t and was told to use P50W first, which I purchased. I’m sure if you say you’ve used P50w already there won’t be a problem. They might ask you about your experience of using it I suppose but you can answer honestly. To be sure you could always take the empty bottle?
