Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEWish since previous threads:

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

JANUARY 2018: Thread 11! Shock we're getting old. A recap of The Snailies categories for those still meaning to get round to them:

🐌🐌 THE SNAILIES 2017 🐌🐌

Wink The Well Hello There - newest and latest find that gets your motor running

Angry The Flusher- money spent on this product would have been better put to use by flushing it down the toilet

Halo The Jack & Rose- the product you’ll never let go of because there’s plenty of fucking space for the two of you on that piece of wood. Damn you, James Cameron, for breaking my poor little tween heart.

Biscuit The LTB- it all seemed so promising, everything was going so great, then they turned out to be a narcissist gaslighting bastard

Envy The Child Prodigy- that one product that’s annoyingly good and isn’t afraid to be smug about it

Smile The Worker Bee- never the centre of attention but has been steadily chugging along like no other

Hmm The Troll- the one where you repeatedly asked, ‘Is this doing anything?’, but continued to use it anyway…

Confused The Flabbergaster- that one product or technique that wasn’t really supposed to be used like that or delivered well beyond your non-existent expectations

Blush The Sinner- oh, admit it because we’re all guilty of it, what did you do or use that wasn’t all that sensible like take an acid bath and had the disastrous results you really knew to expect

Ok thanks Bo I'll just use it on its own then which is probably the safest bet so I can see how I react. I can then alternate between them and LG. My goal this year is to get rid of all old faint scarring and glow like a mofo Grin

Grin I will look magnificent this time next year.

I've just put on the PC extra strength and it feels kind of oily, it didnt sting at all so I'm optimistic.

I might put on my retinoid later before bed after my Ph levels balance back out. I am in full attack mode.

Tantpoke · 20/01/2018 16:40

It also doesnt smell of anything? I was expecting more of a chemical aroma Hmm

OliveBranchColins · 20/01/2018 16:49

Thanks Bo.
I was thinking probably Rosacea, I was only diagnosed with Cml in August so things are probably still settling down.
I haven't spoken to GP yet as she gets a bit panicked when I go inHmm
Hurrah for spoiler alerts!

Ollivander84 · 20/01/2018 16:56

I've just booked my Botox. First time!

Tantpoke · 20/01/2018 17:04

olli loving your eyeshadow in the last pic you posted.

Why the Botox, you don't seem to have any wrinkles?

mintmagnummm · 20/01/2018 17:21

Bo no pressure but just checking you have remembered owing me that question on skincare for my OH Thanks

Ollivander84 · 20/01/2018 17:30

Tant - for my 11 lines and horizontal forehead ones!

userallusedup · 20/01/2018 17:35

Thanks Bo I’m going to order some cicabio spf, I’ve noticed bioderma do quite a few tinted ones as well as the nude touch so might get one of those as well for ‘less makeup’ days, though they all seem to be out of stock on EPP at the moment.

I’m going to look into brow extensions too, that sounds ideal but I’d also miss my oil cleanse, though I suppose we could just avoid the brow area?

I’ll leave the Nivea balm as I don’t like siliconey things, I’m not allergic/reactive, I just don’t like the texture at all. I might just to have to keep forking out for the Becca one as it’s the only primer I’ve found so far that mattifies but doesn’t have that slippy silicone thing going on.

I’m about to re-introduce differin (parked till I knew my skin was ok with PC BHA, which it is) I was thinking:
Night 1 PC BHA
Night 2 just HA & moisturiser
Night 3 differin
Night 4 HA & moisturiser
And repeat
Presume that would be fine & no PH issues as not using on the same night? If all goes well I’ll ramp up to alternate nights with no break.

Olive I thought rosacea too, I am not an expert at all but an ex colleague had it and her skin looked very like yours. She used products prescribed by her GP IIRC so I think it’s definitely worth a visit.

userallusedup · 20/01/2018 17:39

Olli you don’t look like you need Botox at all, but I’m eager for an update as it’s on my list to investigate. I don’t have 11s, I want it for crows feet. Are you going anywhere near Manchester? As I really want real life recommendations but don’t know anyone local to me who has had Botox.

Ollivander84 · 20/01/2018 18:16

User - Burnley way! I will report back

botemp · 20/01/2018 19:49

mint, I'm working on it but it doesn't just appear, I'm about halfway through. Are you in a hurry, as I can do it quick. He's in construction, right. So a lot of dust probably means it gets extra clogged up so a good cleanser will be key, am I safe to assume he's a in the shower type cleanser?

user the brow extension system is called Ilah brows, I think it's originally Irish (a lot of beauty stuff seems to hail from there). Prices here are 30-45 euros depending on how many you need. They also recommend tinting at the same time but that seems superfluous in my case.

I think the primer from REN Olli, mentioned before was also silicone free but probably even more expensive than the Becca.

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 20/01/2018 19:58

The REN is about £50

userallusedup · 20/01/2018 20:07

Thanks Olli Burnley isn’t super local but not too far either and I’d make the trip for someone highly recommended.

Bo I can’t find anywhere that does Ilah brows near me Sad loads of HD, threading, microblading, tattoos etc but nothing that uses actual hairs. There are some diy kits on amazon and eBay that are not expensive and lots of tutorials on YouTube so I’m pondering on giving it a try myself, or roping in a friend with a steady hand.

I’ll have a look at the REN primer, the Becca isn’t extortionate (round £25) but doesn’t seem to go far. It’s a solid, non squeezy tube with a pump so I suspect there’s a good bit left but it’s just not pumping very well any more and I’ve no other way to get it out.

userallusedup · 20/01/2018 20:15

Just looked at the REN one, it looks like a treatment rather than a primer? Does it help with oiliness and shine Olli? You have lovely skin anyway so not sure that you need the amount of help I do Smile And is it value for money in terms of how much product you get and how long it lasts?

botemp · 20/01/2018 20:38

I actually like the idea of diying it, user. The salon here is a trusted one (the best in the country for eyelash extensions), but I do worry that I end up with the HD look everyone is usually after and features heavily in the Ilah promotions. Do you have some links for those sets?

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 20/01/2018 20:52

I've only got a sample of the REN, it's meant to be a cross between a serum and primer. Few reviews of it on google, it just seems to help my makeup sit well. You only need a few drops but it (to me) is still pricey!
I can't really compare it to anything as it's so different to any other primers
The L'Oréal stay fresh foundation is doing well, no oil or separation yet and I'm doing very physical care work tonight

userallusedup · 20/01/2018 20:53

This is the full kit Bo which is £64 but would probably last for ages, but I don’t think I need all those bits and pieces and certainly not the different coloured eyebrow hairs.

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/REVIVE-Brow-Building-Eyebrow-Extensions-Kit-Semi-Permanent-Eyebrow-Enhancements-/281417604322?var=&hash=item87251d703f

I’m looking at just getting the black set of brow hairs

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281524300302

And this glue

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/152266380418

I’m going to watch the tutorials again and see if there’s anything else I might need, the ones I saw were actually using trimmed eyelash extension hairs and eyelash glue, think the only other things they used were nail scissors, very fine tweezers and a brow spoolie which I already own.

botemp · 20/01/2018 21:06

Thanks for the links, user. I'd be tempted to get two colours, one around my colour and one slightly lighter to ensure it looks natural and not too blocky. I think I may brave it and try it out with the salon first as the shipping costs from the UK would pretty much make it the same money. I'll just keep emphasising I want it NATURAL looking.

OP posts:
mintmagnummm · 20/01/2018 21:07

I'm sorry bo I didn't mean to rush you, feel bad now :-(. Yes he is in construction and is definitely an in the shower guy! He needs a good moisturiser too as he can get dehydrated but hates anything greasy or clogging

userallusedup · 20/01/2018 21:19

I think I’m going to DIY Shock just found another YouTube tutorial where she stuck them on without being too precise and then trimmed them into the desired shape afterwards, sounds easy enough (she says hopefully!)

Also found these, but I think the postage is expensive so I’ll go with the eBay stuff for now.

It's okay mint, it was a bit more to tackle than I expected and Friday was a lot more hectic and demanding than anticipated.

I also assume he's not going to be persuaded out of that shower either Hmm. I think the CosRx Low pH morning cleanser is probably a good one for clogged skin if using in the shower, maybe get a konjac sponge to use with it? Just be mindful that it may be a touch drying as he's combo rather than oily and he insists on cleansing his face in the shower. The new LRP Toleriane hydrating cleanser would be good for him too, but I know you don't like ordering from outside the UK and CosRx should be one that's found easily online in the UK. The Avene cleanser you're using may also work for him? Has he tried your Eucerin cream? Any chance the Neutrogena hydro boost gel cream is available in the UK in the unfragranced edition? It's the one marketed to extra dry skin (which should be ignored, it's very light and gel like). It helps to rub that one in on damp skin. He should really be using SPF too, especially if he's outdoors a lot...
