Coats with lots of pockets to augment carry on luggage (yes, Ryanair)

Thinking of getting one like the Bagket anyone got one? Any recommendations of alternatives?

Honestly, for me that is too fugly to wear and I wouldn't want to take anything on travels/holiday if I'm just using carry on that I wouldn't want to wear when there. I'd pack less and buy eg toiletries locally or pay for hold bag!

herecomesthsun · 04/01/2018 07:29

Thanks! I am going with my 9 year old and 6 year old, I was thinking that a bit of spare capacity might be invaluable, especially on the way back.

There are some more alternatives here, the Stuffa holds less but looks a bit more... normal.

Does any one have any of these?

Oh fgs. Pay for a suitcase

pollyhampton · 04/01/2018 07:36

Wouldn't it be cheaper to pay for extra luggage? £70 is ridiculous!

intuition · 04/01/2018 07:38

This can't be serious!!! That's hilarious. Give the kids rucksacks!!

herecomesthsun · 04/01/2018 07:39

This is Ryanair - we will have 2 bags in the hold but it would be great to have a bit of flexibility, I am thinking for the kids impedimenta here.

We will be Eurocamping, when we went by car last summer we had the boot of the Volvo rammed.

And then I saw the Skyscanner article and thought ingenious, no?

blueskyinmarch · 04/01/2018 07:51

If you have two bags in the hold then you will each have a carry on bag surely? The DC can have their own stuff in their own bags and you can have a bag for your bits. Surely if you are going to Eurocamp you will want a rucksack each anyway for taking stuff to the pool/beach/sightseeing?

Kids bring their own hand luggage

No need for weirdo coats Grin

thecatfromjapan · 04/01/2018 08:07

We travel using Ryanair a lot. Never, ever needed to spend a lot of money buying a dress-like-a-professional-shoplifter outfit.

In fact, I usually pack a small canvas bag at the top of my luggage so that I can decant anything I'll need to hand for the flight and pull that out before putting case into overhead locker.

I'm not judging, OP (we all have different packing needs), but surely you have enough storage with your 6 and 9 year old qualifying for luggage too? Those weird pocket clothes seem a very expensive solution to a non-problem.

Undercoverbanana · 04/01/2018 08:07

I have a theory that as I am a smallish person I should be allowed bigger and heavier hand luggage because I take up less space and weight than a larger person! (I know this is not realistic, so don't shout at me!)

You know, I'll bet there is a direct correlation between people who own that 'coat' and people who are members of (or partners of ) Freemen of the Land and such-like groups.

eurochick · 04/01/2018 08:17

Two hold bags and three handliggage pieces is loads! How long are you going for?

herecomesthsun · 04/01/2018 08:24

Right, good to hear from someone who has used Ryanair.

Word is that if your luggage exceeds the stated amount, you and every person in your party gets fined £50, so that would be £200.

That would make the cost of a shoplifter gilet look more reasonable.

If however, people are finding they can pack for themselves and their families for self catering holidays no problem, maybe I don't need one of these.

What is - or who are- Freemen Of The Land?

AgentProvocateur · 04/01/2018 08:29

Ryanair are much better than they used to be. I didn’t even get charged for being a couple of kilos over the last time I flew.

thecatfromjapan · 04/01/2018 08:33

We self-cater. How does that make a difference? Am I missing something?

Yes, they do charge if you go over. And they have a box that you have to fit your luggage into. It's kind of horribly entertaining watching people trying to stuff over-size things into the box while the staff watch on with utterly polite poker faces. So make absolutely certain your luggage is to size.

Freemen of the Land

thecatfromjapan · 04/01/2018 08:37

To be fair, one of my favourite articles/short pieces by Joan Didion is the one in which she discusses her development of a minimalist travel kit during her years as a journalist in the late sixties. When I pack, I like to think I'm a modern, vacationing Joan Didion. I understand that if your travel-packing icon is not Joan Didion, things might be more tricky.

herecomesthsun · 04/01/2018 08:43

Going out last time we took a load of stuff - bed linen, towels (beach, bath, kitchen tee towels), lots and lots of toys.We took some kitchen things which proved useful. Eurocamp have tennis courts and table tennis tables but didn't supply bats and racquets, so we took those. We took books for the kids. When we came back we put the blow up pool toys in the roof box.

This time we are hiring bed linen and bath towels and we will take my kindle. The bigger pool toys will stay at home. We will have to rationalise what we take but I wonder whether we could squeeze in the bats and racquets in the hold bags as we won't have kids clubs to entertain the kids this time.

I was thinking stuffable pockets might be a bonus?

Very interested in tips.

My Dad has a Rufus Roo... he loves it!

He is a bit of a Freeman of the Land kinda guy in spirit.

herecomesthsun · 04/01/2018 08:44

My kids definitely not minimalist Joan Didions, though DH tends that way. DS would like to take his Star Wars Lego fleet I am sure.

OP posts:
eurochick · 04/01/2018 08:49

You get charged if you are over the baggage limits but there are no "fines" for everyone in your party. That's nonsense. You mentioned 200 pounds so does that mean four of you are going? So two hold bags and four hand luggage bags? That's a lot of luggage.

Aragog · 04/01/2018 09:00

Ryan also gives you an additional small hang luggage allowance, so a handbag.

So you've got 2 x 15kg (81x119x119) cases, 4 x 10kg carry on cases (55x40x20) and 4 x handbag/small bag (5x20x20)

If your had luggage is overweight you have to put it in the hold and there is a charge of £50 to do so, for that bag.

So you've already got 30kgs hold and 40kgs carry on = 70kgs plus 4 small hand bags.

That's a lot of luggage. You just need to utilise it well having bags that are the exact dimensions without wasted weight and strange sizes, etc.

Aragog · 04/01/2018 09:02

It'd be cheaper to buy basic toys for the beach over there and leave them.

Phuquocdreams · 04/01/2018 09:08

Yes, just going to say surely would be cheaper to buy toys other there than one of those ridiculous coats. Or even just pay for another bag in the hold?
