You need a man's coat. They have loads of pockets.

intuition · 04/01/2018 09:18

Still laughing!! Can't imagine the hassle going through security at airport with THAT jacket!!

herecomesthsun · 04/01/2018 09:22

Is 2 weeks. Also, we prob need to buy new cabin bags anyway. We have 4 rucksacks but I am sure they don't meet the exact dimensions of 55x40x20, neither would the cabin bag I bough 20 years ago

I've been fighting the light and the dark side of my nature. I'm hoping that it is the light side that has won ...

That jacket ...

Honestly, people in the queue will look and judge. People who wear jackets like that also have extremely idiosyncratic approaches to food and cooking. Seriously. They see recipes as authoritarian, and look for individualist responses to the issue of food preparation.

You're invited around to a (usually male) acquaintance's house for dinner. It's steak.

Guest: "Oh, this is so tender! Yum!"
Host: "Thank you. I've developed my own technique for tenderising meat ..."
You (thinking): "Oh no. Oh please, no."
Host: "Yes, I wrap it in cling film in the morning and put it in my trouser pockets. Then I wear it all day. You can see the difference it makes."

Later ...

Host: "I want to show you this jacket I've bought that gets round the Ryanair luggage allowance ..."

Honestly, ditch the toys - your children won't need them and plastic racquets and balls can be bought really cheaply and left behind. It'll save on bad feeling about things being lost/broken, too.

Holidays are a great excuse to leave stuff at home: material things and the psychological stress that goes with them. It's amazingly liberating to go on holiday and discover just how little baggage you need. It's a holiday. There is going to be so much stuff to do, in a new place, that they really aren't going to need all the stuff you have at home. And the fewer clothes you pack, the less there is to wash whilst you're away.

herecomesthsun · 04/01/2018 09:35

Ah no. The fewer clothes we pack, the more frantically I will be handwashing stuff. My kids have an affinity for mud and chocolate ice cream.

Are you aware Ryanair baggage allowance changes 15 Jan? From what I gather if you are not priority boarding you only can take a bag that goes under seat in front. (Disclaimer this is from skim read so may be wrong)

Bathbathbath · 04/01/2018 09:40

Every Eurocamp site I’ve been to has washing machines. Once I figured that out packing has become much easier.

intuition · 04/01/2018 09:41

Are you planning all this for the summer?? Seriously take a chill pill!! It's half a year away. Your kids will be a year older than last year so totally different!!

Surely by the time you've bought new bags and THAT jacket, you could have upgraded to EasyJet!!

Haven't planned breakfast today yet!! Life's too short.

KiaOraAura · 04/01/2018 09:46

Here are the new Ryanair rules, you can still bring a a cabin bag, it just goes in the hold instead. Should help speed up boarding with fewer people trying to ram stuff in the lockers.

– Only Priority Priority Boarding customers (including Plus, Flexi Plus & Family Plus) will be allowed to bring two carry-on bags on the aircraft*

– All other (i.e. non-priority) customers will only be allowed to bring one smaller carry-on bag on board, while their second (bigger) wheelie bag will be placed in the hold (free of charge) at the boarding gate

herecomesthsun · 04/01/2018 09:50

going 30th March for Easter, so looking to formulate a game plan Grin. I did a fair bit of solo travelling before kids, this will be our first flight since kids, they are very excited.

I find Ryanair and its changes of regulations very confusing. I got Family Plus with our tickets, I think we get 2 pieces of cabin luggage and priority boarding, but there is no guarantee the cabin luggage goes in the cabin (yes it s confusing)

Holidays with washing machines have helped me pack a lot lighter. Caravan sites, holiday apartments, used them at both places. Just make sure you pack a few liquitabs or similar.
Also never needed to panic re bags as everyone with a suitcase has been allowed a carry-on (whether or not they are the ones carrying it) and I always use a roomy handbag.

herecomesthsun · 04/01/2018 10:59

When we went in the summer, we went swimming daily, so there was a load of stuff to be rinsed through that couldn't really go in the washing machine. Also the Eurocamp machines seemed hugely expensive, as well as being some distance from our chalet.

Even with quite a lot of clothes with us, we always seemed to have a load of washing drying, as did the chalets round us.

If you have family plus then you can take your luggage on board IF you are one of the first so many on. Used to be 70 or 90 (forget which) but the new rules may have altered that. That's been the case for all passengers before with those with priority, etc getting in first so guaranteed keeping their bags and then the rest after. I guess they must have more people paying for priority, etc so it now applies to everyone. Mind, we've had this with easyJet and other budget airlines re carry on and only so many allowed in. Least with Ryan air you get to have the smaller bag so don't have to decant into your hands at the gate.

LadyinCement · 04/01/2018 12:24

Yes, Easyjet only allow one piece so no handbag + carry-on luggage. Even people hiding bags under their coats were identified and told to squash the stuff into their hand luggage when I last flew.

I really hate the "late arrivers" who do the important running thing at the last minute with humungous cases and trust that they will be allowed to bring them on in order to avoid delaying departure. I was Angry as I had a micro-sized case and no handbag and there was this person who breezed on late with a backpack, laptop case and a big pull-along suitcase which of course didn't fit in the overhead lockers and was clonking over everyone's heads.

squoosh · 04/01/2018 12:58

Ryanair are virtually easygoing these days with the luggage. Carry on bag plus handbag.

HildaZelda · 04/01/2018 14:34

Here you go:

corporate.ryanair.com/news/new-cabin-bag-policy-commences-in-one-month/

Basically from the 15th of January only priority passengers will be allowed bring two pieces of luggage on board (ie: a 'handbag' size bag and a small carry on case) All other passengers can bring a cabin size case but it will be checked into the hold free of charge. Your main suitcase (larger checked in one) will go up from 15kg to 20kg.

macnab · 04/01/2018 15:13

To be honest, I love when they take the hand luggage off you at check-in. I'd far rather it goes in the hold than me dragging 10kg around the airport. Anything I really need (kindle, phone, money etc) can still be in my handbag.

OP you'll be fine with the luggage as is, and I agree with others suggesting you just pay for another bag rather than one of those suicide-bomber type jackets!

field10 · 05/01/2018 09:06

Why don't you just pay for another suitcase. Every passengers is entitled to take one plus hand luggage.
My kids hand luggage has the things in toys, books that they want to take. We have always gone self catering accommodation. And be realistic you are going on holiday surely you have chosen somewhere that caters for kids so they will probably spend most of their time in the pool. And inflatable toys are not that expensive you can buy new when you get there same with tennis rackets it's a bit of fun they don't need to be professional. It sounds like you just want take everything and I guarantee your kids won't be bothered with all this stuff if they are out having fun.

Aragog · 05/01/2018 09:36

Macnab - I agree. Most of the time, if we have other hold luggage as well, we ask at check in if they want to take the bags. Ryanair often will. EasyJet usually won't take them from you until at the gate in our experience. If we are going carry on only we prefer to keep them with is so it's quicker at the other end, but at least if they're taken at the gate they are first off.

herecomesthsun · 06/01/2018 00:27

To be honest I am working out the logistics, it is very helpful to hear from people how it has worked out for them, given that we haven't done a holiday like this before. So many thanks!
