Why are all wellies Hunters

babigailwabble · 01/01/2018 11:06

Ok I know they aren't. But the ones I like are. Except I hate hunters, they are heavy and stiff and I'm replacing a pair that died imo prematurely relative to cost Angry

I am considering a pair of short, glossy green ones. But they are hunters. When I google all I find are reams and reams of hunters, joules Envy, le Cham (yawn), muck boots. Am I missing something? There must be more to wellies in 2017!

The ones I really want are rockfish sweet pea short glossy but I think they are old stock as they aren't stocked in a 6 anymore.

I've also seen some devastating fairfax and favour boots (flat, Regina) and my finger is hovering. Are they a bit upper middle class (well yes, but ubiquitously?). I'm not one of those country casual Kate Middleton wannabes like the blog I found when googling for more pictures ..... they've just grabbed me! Although KMW has described them as slippery on her blog which might be a deal breaker as I'm great at falling over...

I've just had the same Hunter issue after my gorgeous lime green pair developed some serious cracks.

Nearly went for a fancy Ariat pair, but instead I've ordered a Hoggs of Fife navy pair from Amazon. They had some good reviews and were reasonably priced. Fingers crossed.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 01/01/2018 11:18

Use to wear Hunters but quality is awful now. I'm a Muck Boot fan.

PartyRat · 01/01/2018 11:26

Don't get a pair of suede boots instead of wellies, are you mad! They will be ruined the first time you were them in any sort of weather that would require wellies.

flocktheclock · 01/01/2018 11:33

I know you said no Le Chameau but they are the comfiest wellies I've ever had and 2 years in are holding up well.
I've got thin feet and sruggle with wellies.

babigailwabble · 01/01/2018 11:51

@PartyRat not instead of Wellies, silly! In addition to wellies, I do NOT need another pair of expensive suede boots 😆

@flocktheclock my feet are somewhat paddle like.. tbh I don't do anything mental with my wellies I might wear them max once per week if the weather is really bad! They are never my favourite thing to put on. I'd rather spend less than 40 and would happily do so if I could find a design I liked that was available!

@Muffinbutton thanks I'm looking up both now!

I'm perfectly happy in my garden-centre green Dunlops, personally......

missyB1 · 01/01/2018 12:56

I have seasalt ones which are great quality (about 8 years old now), also have a pair of navy Dunlop ones for walking the dog.

babigailwabble · 01/01/2018 13:48

@missyB1 i was looking at the seasalt ones and just thought they extremely resembled those used for boat decks/sailing with super flat soles.. aren't they slippy as hell on mud etc??

OP posts:
missyB1 · 01/01/2018 13:53

My seasalt wellies have a deep tread on them, went on a very slippery walk the other day and I was the only person who stayed in my feet!

BuzzKillington · 01/01/2018 13:59

My Hunters were shit and split at the sole after very little wear.

I have DM long boots and Le Chameau and they are both bloody brilliant.

ALLIS0N · 01/01/2018 14:08

If you have a limited budget then I recommend these

www.decathlon.co.uk/glenarm-300-wellies-warm-id_8345669.html

Apparently they are designed for standing at post on long game drives but I use them for gardening and walking the dog. They are very warm and a slim fit on foot and calf.

Pfftkids · 01/01/2018 14:11

I have a pair of green Dunlops and love them, they are soft, lightweight and really comfortable. I ditched the hunters, I wouldn't buy an expensive pair again

CottonSock · 01/01/2018 14:14

I've had my hunters for 25 years... maybe the don't make em like they used too.

BuzzKillington · 01/01/2018 14:18

CottonSock, I think you're right.

My dh wears his dad's Hunters which are at least 25 years old and they're going strong. He got a new pair as a gift and, like mine, they were shit.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 01/01/2018 14:18

I am another Muck Boots devotee. So much comfier than wellies!

thatcoldfeeling · 01/01/2018 14:20

Hunters are bollocks.

The Muck Boots are wayyyyyy better and last longer without getting cracks. Le Cham same. Joules - avoid, avoid, avoid.

SuburbanCrofter · 01/01/2018 18:50

I need to wear wellies almost every day and have road tested many brands. After a recommendation on here, I chose Dunlops and have never looked back.

TheSameCoin · 01/01/2018 18:54

Another vote for Dunlops. I wear mine for walking the dog and they have been going strong for at least 4 years now.

MrsExpo · 01/01/2018 18:56

Just had a great pair of Ariats for christmas. Not the cheapest wellies in the world, but great boots.

Situp · 01/01/2018 18:58

I have quite wide feet and hunters just split so quickly. Really disappointing

DontCallMeCharlotte · 01/01/2018 19:25

Well they're not pretty but if you need them to actually do the job, I recommend Dickies. Slightly shorter so good for the generous of calf and quite wide fitting. I realise I may have missed the point of the thread.
