Talk to me about 'natural' looking makeup

IamScarfaceClaw · 30/12/2017 15:56

It is my New Years resolution to wear more makeup (more than the none I currently wear.)

I would like to wear ‘natural’ looking makeup, as I don’t want to shock myself too much when I see someone else’s face looking back at me from the mirror!

I have looked online for tutorials but they all seem to involve a lot of products and want me to buy things from their website/blog.

If you wear this sort of makeup what products to you use/swear by? -and how long do you spend doing makeup in the morning?

My main issue is dark under eye circles and huge pores on my cheeks and nose, so any tips for dealing with this would be great.

Following with interest as I'm the same!

hugoagogo · 30/12/2017 16:05

My make up is very minimal. Maybelline under eye eraser thingy under my eyes and next to my nose. Then either a little dab of bb cream or Boots organic all bright balm on my cheeks and chin. Brown waterproof mascara, lip balm and that's the lot.

For a night out I might add eyeliner and or lipstick Smile

On line make up tutorials tend to be made by people who love makeup and want to transform themselves, this involves loads more makeup than I would ever wear and never looks 'natural' ime.

Try the Beauty and the Boutique website. She does lots of video tutorials and has a nice natural look. I've ordered a couple of things from there and it's always very quick delivery

Ohyesiam · 30/12/2017 16:11

Primer is great for the pore thing, they are pretty much all the same( no doubt period will be on to dispute this), I think my current one is called nano blur.
The most invisible, yet really flattering foundation I've found is Chanel Vitalumier. The Chanel consultant will give you testers that last weeks. Put it on with a brush, and blend with your fingers.
Make your mascara look natural by brushing through your lashes, curling them and putting on a small amount to the top lashes only. I like Benefit They're Real.

I think the editorial version is definitely a case of more products and technique than you'd think. I used to call my approach to makeup 'natural' these days I call it 'low maintenance'.

I use an under eye concealer (skin is good thanks to skincare regime, on occasion I go nuts and slap on a tinted moisturiser).

A simple brow gel to run through brows.

Tightliner (you colour the inner rim of your eye, top only in my case, easier and quicker than eyeliner and virtually undetectable)

Eyelash curler followed by mascara.

I usually wear a red lip but otherwise a tinted lip balm which would be more natural.

Blusher and/or sculpting powder if I feel like it, usually if it's gloomy out. Either spend a lot on a powder one or get a cream blush for a less obvious blush look.

I spend maybe 5-10 mins but I'm usually getting distracted so could probably do it in less time.

For you, I'd say spend money on under eye concealer, get a peachy toned one. Bobbi Brown has a good setup for dark circles but the Kiko full coverage ones are good too, especially if you take two colours, one slightly darker and peachy to cover and one lighter to highlight a bit. For the pores one of those pore filling primers would be good, and then a light base in the problem areas only to avoid it looking to done. I'd use a beauty blender to apply as that does seem to give the most natural finish.

I use a By Terry Foundation and concealer. Cheap mascara and occasionally some blusher. Takes less than a minute to throw on.

Creasey31 · 30/12/2017 16:16

I’ve started using Tropics it looks really natural on, I use the cream foundation followed by the powder. It also smells nice and covers well. Had lots of compliments. Used to use urban decay and I really liked that but it was not natural looking and was quite thick

Almostthere15 · 30/12/2017 16:25

My everyday look is bb cream (garnier) with their bb undereye roller. (I sometimes use benefit porefessional as a primer if my pores look large). Then a bone coloured eyeshadow all over the lid, some fawn eyeshadow towards the outer corner and a bronze in the socket line. A coat or two of mascara. A little cream blush (applied with fingers) and lip balm.

If I have more time/inclination I sometimes do some subtle contouring or a more extreme eye. For a night out I mix some foundation into the bb cream for extra coverage.

A lot of my make up is high street. If you're not sure where to start bobbi brown always seem best at 'You but better' and I've never had a hard sell from them.

Foodylicious · 30/12/2017 16:28

I would start eith a good tinted moisturiser, so a CC or BB cream.
I have recently discovered loreals highlighter which I love.
I also have a light bluster which I put on before a light dusting of powder.
Then eyeliner and mascara.
Takes me 5 mins max

Foodylicious · 30/12/2017 16:31

If you want to try something out, have a trip to a larger Boots and they will do your make up for you. Just tell them clearly what look you want.
Debenhams is good too (have gone in for make up doing between work and pub before haha) lots of different make up counters

Misty9 · 30/12/2017 16:36

I've never worn makeup regularly but age is against me recently and I've started with a liquid foundation applied with a sponge for ease, and a pink blusher (no.7 I think) applied with a great retractable brush. I can go and look at the brand of foundation if you like Smile I haven't got any but mascara has always been maybelline super lash or whatever it's called. I wear this makeup now maybe 3 times a week.

Soozikinzii · 30/12/2017 16:38

I'm another one who uses garnier B.B. cream ,maybelline mascara and maybelline 24 hour lip colour .Also wunderbrow eyebrow stuff for a night out which is the most expensive item but worth it .

tailspin · 30/12/2017 16:38

I’d say actually keep it minimal. Take good care of your skin, and then use some light products like a good under eye concealer and a light water based foundation (Smashbox bb water is lovely), a little bit of mineral powder and some blush or bronzer and voila. This is what I do (with occasionally eyeliner and mascara) and it takes me 5-10 minutes.

IamScarfaceClaw · 30/12/2017 16:40

Thank you! I’m already creating a wish list. I certainly will try the peach toned under eye concealer and a primer to deal with pores. I’m a bit scared of blusher to be honest! I have quite yellow toned skin and have never ever had rosy cheeks.

So an eye shadow slightly darker/brighter than natural skin tone? And minimal eye liner?

I think I only own black mascara and eye liner....would you recommend dark brown instead? I have blue/gray eyes and non existent lips.

Lisa Eldridge was my starting point... She has a few videos on her webpages for natural looks and also drugstore best buys...

saoirse31 · 30/12/2017 20:18

Go to say Bobbi brown and get a free make up lesson, have found them generally excellent

ILoveDolly · 30/12/2017 20:20

I use Benefit Porefessional on the areas that need it

lolalotta · 30/12/2017 20:20

botemp · 30/12/2017 20:26

For blusher try a browney-rose colour, like Stila Camelia. It won't read like a blush but more like a healthy complexion, especially good if you go a bit sallow at this time of year. I think black mascara is fine, I also only wear it on my top lashes for the day. If you go brown you run the risk of not emphasising the eyes enough which sound to be your best feature.

lyrabellaqua · 30/12/2017 20:27

Apparently yellow toned skin is warm, So i have an apricot blush, not pink. I have nothing to add, the house of colour lady told me this :D

ILoveDolly · 30/12/2017 20:29

Sorry, hadn't finished! As I said, Porefessional with Garnier BB Cream, some brownish nude eyes palette, dark brown mascara. I have some nice tinted lipbalm and nude lipliner which look very natural but pretty. Also a creme blusher in a tube adds a natural bit of pink if that suits your skintone.

Zeldaaa · 30/12/2017 20:33

On an every day basis (unless I know no one is going to see me) I wear the Bobbi Brown corrector and concealer. I use the serum one as opposed to the cream as it’s lighter and less likely to cake.

For my base, at the weekend i use pixi h20 skin tint. For work I wear Armani luminous silk or lasting silk.

Any mascara

Tinted lip balm

JassyBelle · 31/12/2017 12:55

Second taking good care of your skin, if you have dry skin it can look worse with make up on as the make-up clings & emphasises the dry patches.

My everyday look is nyx orange toned corrector under the eyes, nars pure radiant tinted moisturiser (fairly pricey but the only one I've found that fills my requirements ie light coverage, yellow toned & good on dry skin), maybelline brow drama swept through the brows, highlighter on the top of the bone only not halfway down the face, mascara & tinted lip balm. I always put mascara on top & bottom lashes to balance the eyes, I like a voluminous masacra on the top lashes & more defining mascara on the bottom.

If I'm making a bit more effort but still want a natural look for a day out or something I'll do a thin line of eyeliner on my top lid, do my brows properly, subtle contouring & peachy-pink blush.

Hauntedlobster · 31/12/2017 12:57

Go to s bareminerals counter and buy one of their get started kits 😊

FabalaTheGreenGirl · 31/12/2017 13:47

On light days I can some concealer on problem areas, lash on some mascara to frame my eyes and put on a bright lippy.
