Excuse the franglais.

Here it is - the third thread in the series, where we add a little je ne sais quoi to our lives, inspired by the style of our souers across the Channel.

Thanks to our top contributor and style guru Botemp, we are finding ways to lift ourselves out of the style doldrums with a slash of red on the lips, a touch of white where it counts, an insouciant scarf or even an over the knee sock or two for the brave among us.

Take it as far as you dare, Mariannes!

Oh Sock what a bummer Sad I did wonder whether I should have PMd you but if you were offline I guess that wouldn't have helped. But I missed last autumn's launch due to work and everything I had wanted did come back in. I think a lot of people order 2 sizes, especially in the trousers as they normally run large - I usually go one size smaller than usual and have got away with 2. I did get a bit obsessive though and at one point was checking on the hour Blush You can ask them to email you when they come in but I didn't find that helpful as they'd normally sold out again by the time I saw the message. I'm afraid I don't know which stores stock that range.

Edina we stayed in the Hotel Due Torri on Vicolo del Leonetto in the Centro Storico. It's a three star and was listed as mid price range (for that part of the city) in the Lonely Planet guide. It may be in the Rough Guide too (We normally go for hotels listed in at least one of those and preferably both.) The rooms are small but I imagine that's standard for that area. Nice, friendly, independently run hotel with a good buffet breakfast (not just a stale croissant) included in the price. The hotel in Trastevere had closed, which did surprise me a bit, considering how popular that neighbourhood is now.
I think the street with the vintage shops is Via del Governo Vecchio, near Piazza Navona - again it's in the Lonely Planet and/or Rough Guide. I'll try and check/remember the better/more reasonably priced restaurants round there.

Thanks for the pics on how to wear too large Levis.
I bought my first pair in Paris last year and they are much too big.
I have since bought a couple more pairs sizing down 2 sizes!
If anyone is interested there are some bargain Levis jeans on Amazon at
the moment.

EnidButton · 27/01/2018 18:59

I just painted my nails a glossy dark navy blue (Essie midnight cami). The jumper I'm wearing tomorrow is a soft slightly coral-y pink so thought it would be a good pairing. Looks good but it's giving me strong 90's vibes for some reason 🤔 I never painted my nails in the 90's so no idea why.

EnidButton · 27/01/2018 19:00

Liking the Levi pics btw. I'm going to try some men's Levi's. Women's jeans don't seem to be a friend of my big bum.

OverinaFlash · 27/01/2018 21:29

I like the gap curve boot cut jeans Edina. I am also generous of bottom.

Yes the shirt is still on my mind..I might go and try it on. Great tip for the ironing!

Methenyouplus4 · 27/01/2018 22:13

I bought some Gap jeans a few weeks ago and they seemed reasonably loose and straight legged. I went to check what they were called to recommend them on here as they didn't seem to have much elastic... Turns out they are 'true skinny'. They are most certainly not! I bought my usual size and they don't cling at all but hang pretty loose. Will take photos of I remember tomorrow. I can only think that their sizing must just be VERY generous.

Wore my KIKO red lip today with liner under (the whole lip) and didn't need to reapply at all-very impressed. Love the tubes too.

OverinaFlash · 28/01/2018 08:54

Methenyou, I find gap jeans unreliable between the styles. I bought a pair of their normal bootcut, couldn't get then done up, a pair of the curve, they fit perfectly, even thought they are an inch smaller! Like the sound of the relaxed straight fit, sometimes I get board of boot cut.

OverinaFlash · 28/01/2018 08:54

Bored of course, not board!

ProperLavs · 28/01/2018 09:00

GAP sizing is very odd. I was in a shop yesterday looking through the dregs of the sale rails. I never know what size to choose My daughters were asking me too and I told them to grab lots of sizes. For instance I tried a pair of real leather leggings in size zero and they were a tad too loose. I tried on some sculpt leggings in a wonderful burgundy in a size zero and couldn't do the buttons up they were that small. I could barely fit in to the next size up either. I was gutted they didn't have my size.

However my 14 year old told me that i looked ' very French' shopping yesterday. i was well chuffed. I was wearing my dark blue coated toyshop jeans, my vintage pea coat, my fisherman's cap , my office lace up brogue nooks and a silly scar, oh and red lipstick!

I went into space NK to try on a mars blusher I'd read loads about. it didn't really suit so asked the SA to recommend something else. of course he went straight to 'BY Terry'. Sure it was ok, but not for 50 odd quid it wasn't.
I was wondering what blusher I could wear if i was wearing red lippie, then I realised that if the lipstick shade suited my face then surely putting a bit on my cheeks would work too. And it really really does!

That's saved me a few quid!

EdinaMonsoon · 28/01/2018 09:27

Will definitely take a look at Gap jeans but agree the sizing is all over the place in there. I do think straight jeans look better without stretch & they wear to a delicious softness rather than the inevitable sag that comes with elastane denim blends.

ProperLavs your outfit yesterday sounds great. Good idea about the lipstick as blusher. Trinny has a product in her new make up range called Lip2Cheek so it must make sense (I haven’t tried it). I think it also depends on how much the red lippy lights up your face. When I wear Chanel Pirate I can get away with not wearing any blusher at all. It’s so vibrant that it brings out my natural cheek blush & my eyes look bright blue too. I can just wear mascara & still look “made up”. Whereas Nars Charlotte is a dark berry shade that suits me but definitely requires blush as it drains my skin tone a little. Definitely recommend Malice by Chanel as a good “suits all” blusher. It can be hard to find though.

Currently lounging around drinking tea & re-reading “How to be Parisian”. It makes me laugh out loud in places (not sure how one is supposed to be shaggable in the queue at the bakers Grin) but in general I like its irreverance & tonge-in-cheek tone.

ProperLavs · 28/01/2018 12:11

edina i agree re the elastane. I love my levis because the jeans change over the days before they are washed again. It's like wearing a different pair of trousers each day! I love it when they soft and worn in.

I am looking at vintage pairs on eBay. I fancy a different baggy style. perhaps 505?

Floisme · 28/01/2018 12:47

I have to disagree (again Blush) about jeans. I do like my leather old school and worn in but when, it comes to denim, I prefer a bit of lycra. I have far too many memories of badly heated houses where your jeans would set like concrete after washing. And sometimes finding ice in the creases. That's what no-stretch denim means to me.

But we only need a tiny bit of lycra - I would say 2% absolute tops. They're putting way too much in to compensate for using thin, low grade denim.

Floisme · 28/01/2018 12:48

That should be 'They're putting'. Then as you were.

MadameBronte · 28/01/2018 14:56

Gap sizing is bonkers. I have sweaters sizing from S - XL and they all fit the same. At the moment I'm wearing my favourite Gap Girlfriend Fit jeans in a 28" waist. They were really tight when I first put them on, and I nearly sent them back. But they have now softened and fit perfectly. The thing is, if I measure my waist with a tape measure, it's 33"!

ChangoMutney · 28/01/2018 18:55

I hate to lower the tone, but I'm rather fond of Sainsbury's girlfriend jeans. They're much nicer than they look on their site and around £15, I'm waiting to lose weight and then I'll get Huit ones.

quirkychick · 28/01/2018 21:43

I think I may have a couple of pairs of old 501s from 20+ yrs ago Blush. Now, I tried some Levi's 30 on in John Lewis (they were a bargain us £25) but we're really too big, but I'm sure my old 501s are also 30s, what's the betting there's some vanity sizing going on and they're much smaller. flo I'm sure they have no lycra and are quite stiff denim. I did wear my leather blazer today with a black/grey Mongolian lamb fur scarf, taking advantage of the slightly milder weather.

BagelGoesWalking · 29/01/2018 00:13

Chango I really like Sainsbury's straight leg jeans. Got another pair of both blue and black online, but was very disappointed when I tried them on. Bigger, although label size is the same, thinner material and more stretchy, so they sag very quickly.

So bloody annoying as they were perfect before.

CatherineMaitland · 29/01/2018 05:22

I bought two pairs of Sainsburys straight leg jeans when I'd lost some extra weight but not all I wanted to lose (still haven't) - I was quite impressed, although the dark wash did fade a bit quickly.

ProperLavs · 29/01/2018 06:57

I hate vanity sizing because it makes everything so confusing. As a teen my jeans were size 10 . I am pretty much the same size and my jeans are size 6/ 24-25"/ 0-00 in gap. Even with levis I can need 2 different sizes in the same style depending on the rinse. It makes no sense to me. It makes buying online almost impossible.

EdinaMonsoon · 29/01/2018 07:35

Sizing across the high street is generally inconsistent & whilst you could argue that it reflects different price points between stores, it is particularly frustrating when it happens within a single store. The issue with jeans may be due to fibre content: pure cotton denim will be less giving than elastane blends. I had the same issue trying on 501s because some rinses were pure cotton, others blended & like ProperLav it meant going up 2 or 3 sizes.

Tanaqui · 29/01/2018 08:01

It is partly keeping things cheap- if you cut a great big pile of denim all at once, some of the fabric will be pulled tighter than others, and you get different sizes that should be all the same. Different colours and washes may come from other factories (or even countries!) and so be sized differently. In cheap clothes shops, if one size 10 is tight, and a 12 too big, it can be worth trying on a few to see if you can get a small 12 or a big 10.

ToElleWithIt · 29/01/2018 08:12

That one of the frustrations I have with high street shopping, especially because I have to do most of my shopping online. The sizes are all over the place, so I have to return loads of things or order multiple sizes.

One of the advantages of NAP is that they're really clear on how the sizes fit, height of model etc so I can be virtually certain that the clothes will at east be the right size.

I love the inspo pictures Edina

I really want to order these hiutdenim.co.uk/products/coda but I'm unsure about the size. The sizing guide say to measure your own jeans, but clearly there's a difference between measuring the waist on high-waisted skinnies and low hanging boyfriends. Should I just order my actual waist size, which matches my dress size?

TheGrumpySquirrel · 29/01/2018 08:22

GAP is the worst for vanity sizing. I have to buy size 00 or 0 in jeans which is like uk 2-4??!! Abs then sometimes they are still too big. No way. At my slimmest I'm a 6-8 uk.

botemp · 29/01/2018 08:48

Just doing a quick catch-up on the train to Paris. Decided to overhaul my wardrobe at the last minute as temps are definitely a lot warmer. Even wearing the 501s as a result, had a massive fitting session with them over the weekend pulling out some summer clothes and they're great with a lot of things and I love how they look with my new IM trainers (rest of the outfit APC VPC t-shirt and my newest Dries blazer, plus giant silk woven scarf).

Overina, I keep meaning to flag this up before the influencers are all paid to tell you about it, there's a new UK based shopping service called Endource, basically you can order a boatload of clothes from most major retailers and a small fee is charged (though not clear how much, I assume it's a %) and you only get charged what you keep. Don't know if I'd use it for normal shopping but if you're looking to try a lot of things all at once it's an accessible way to do it without fronting everything up front, especially if you need different sizes.

Also WRT to the shirts discussion, in your case I'd be looking for a t-blouse which has princess seaming that makes for a good vertical line across the body and draws the eye up and gives the impression of a bit more roundness in the chest area (which can look off if you've got a decent chest). A rounded hem rather than a straight one is also worth looking out for as those tend to sit more flattering. Anne Fontaine should have them in their basic lineup but they're quite spendy.

Edina, it's been awhile but the last time I was in Rome with a group of friends we stayed at a monastery (there's a few in Rome) and it was mostly a compromise between those who refused to stay in anything less than four stars and those who didn't want to waste money and wanted to stay in a youth hostel, but it was surprisingly lovely (and very affordable, think we paid under €40 a night, prices haven't seen to gone up much but it was in winter). It's slightly off the tourist grid and part of the old city walls but it meant the restaurants were a better choice and it was really quiet, and everything else was easy to get to. It's a tad austere but nothing prison like or unpleasant, just sober, rooms were very spacious. We had a beautiful view over the monastery gardens and breakfast was good too which had jams from their gardens. There were lots of young families staying, I think they had special family rooms. The attached church was lovely to visit too, there's also a more famous church nearby but I forgot which one it is.

www.domussessoriana.it/en/

flo and cactus enthusiasm for Rome are making me reconsider if I should give it a go again though. Maybe I've been too harsh on it and should've explored it further and in better weather (it was either ludicrously hot or bitterly cold).

Elle, we did end up with the same skirt Grin I'm very fond of mine too, it really is one that sounds horrid on paper but it's absolutely lovely. I liked it best with a grey linen t-shirt and tan sandals, I have to do some more experimenting with it. High heels were not that great but lowish ones were good. I found a pic on my phone when I was unboxing it all, the far left are the very abstract leopard trousers from Philip Lim and the one next to it is the Dries.

Madame, if they can't fix it, or not in a way that looks nice you can always get a rectangle of scrap leather and attach it Margiela style (4 simple stitches at an angle on the corners, usually with a contrasting colour to emphasise the detail).

Proper, I'm not a fan of Nars either (had to giggle a bit at the thought of you putting a mars bar on as blush Wink, infant chic, maybe?). I've never tried the BT ones, but it is one of their brands so I always have the idea Space NK pushes those harder. I do like to spend a bit more on blush powders (Surratt are my faves but very expensive) because I like a subtle wash of colour that lasts all day. Some people like the sleek blushes, similar to Nars but I find them a little too intense. Not fussy at all with cream blushers, I have a very nice one from &other stories that's a lip and cheek (though I only ever find these to work well for one or the other on me). I've had good ones from Kiko in the past too, they look like the Nars multiples.

Flo, I prefer a touch of elastane or PE too, but as you say not too much. Only ever do larger % if it's a premium denim brand as it's woven in there in a way that's still stiffish but the high% low price jeans really are a false economy, I think with regular wear they last less than a year. I'm not intending to ever wash my 100% cotton 501s, I'll stick them in the freezer after every few wears and only attempt to wash them if I absolutely have to.

NAP is also really great with delivery and returns and speed of refunding, Elle. I wish their shipping was just a touch lower or at least occasionally free, I'd order more often with them.

I find American non designer sizes off the chart universally, we don't get much of it here but I haven't bought anything from Gap for at least a decade when I used to buy loads there in the late 90s/early 00s, it's all just really big even if it is your size and fitting where it should Confused
