I wash they would do an up to date version of what not to wear

holly W is thin: if you’re thin with big boobs high necks can work.

Leviticus · 14/12/2017 10:29

Do you remember when they pulled that poor woman's knickers down?

SaturndayNight · 14/12/2017 11:21

The first couple of series of what not to wear were great. It was rubbish ice they made it all psychobabbly and all about the husband's - nobody cares what men wear!

SaturndayNight · 14/12/2017 11:22

Susanna always wanted to put them in a nice cardigan. Trinny was all about "a good trouser".

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 14/12/2017 11:27

I loved them. As Floisme says, they demystified the issue of why certain things suit you and others don't. It made me much more confident about buying interesting things but also because mainly I find clothes boring and don't want to think about them, I loved the fact that they boiled it all down to simple rules so you could go straight to what suited you.
The psychobabble was boring as hell though.

Niminy · 14/12/2017 12:32

I loved them too. I liked the way they didn't take themselves too seriously while still being really serious about how much better you feel when you are wearing nice clothes that suit you. I still think about some of their style rules and they were dead right about skinnies.

Salvadore · 14/12/2017 18:01

Skinnies?

Annabelle4 · 14/12/2017 18:08

Trinny has been on 'this morning' a few times recently

Dozer · 14/12/2017 18:28

If she’s still dating the abusive charles saatchi I feel sorry for her.

DrRisotto · 14/12/2017 18:35

Oh, I hope not

arousingcheer · 15/12/2017 02:26

I still remember the thing about wearing neutrals with neutrals (something like you should wear black/grey/white with each other but not black with colour a la Liza Minnelli). It still looks so fresh to wear different colours together and black-goes-with-anything looks very dated imo.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 15/12/2017 07:49

Colour advice is always going to date more than the bodyshape advice because the former is to do with fashion. I mean, the colours that suit your skin tone advice is not going to change but different eras disagree on what goes with what.

I also have a book of theirs about what signals your clothes send out, and obviously this will change according to fashion but the basic principle of looking at an outfit and saying 'what will people read into this?' is still useful.

I think if you are the level of clueless about clothes that I used to be you get more out of them than if you have a normal level of understanding Wink

Kitsharrington · 15/12/2017 15:24

I think big bust and high neckline can be a bit matronly.

All I remember about T&S was that they were obsessed with wrap dresses over trousers.

weebarra · 15/12/2017 15:47

I don't mind a high neckline, I've had a mastectomy and low ones show gaps and scarring. Appreciate that others don't have the same issue.
I think T and S did a great thing for Jo Brand! Ever since they worked with her she wears much more flattering clothes and really seems to be aware of what works for her.

Flappyears · 15/12/2017 15:58

Weebara what I do is wear a different colour vest underneath the scoop neckline. So a dark scoop with a lighter (nearer skin tone or contrasting) top underneath. It creates the same effect of breaking up the line without showing too much boobage. I love mine but bit old to show too much of them off.

I agree fashion is so much aimed at flatter chested women. Boxy shapes are also prevalent and look great on flat chested women.

Also I think general frame size makes a difference. Petite, narrow shouldered women can get away with higher necks and boobs more than larger framed women. I’m quite broad shouldered and look like a bus in something high necked and boxy.

PantPlot · 15/12/2017 16:05

I have big tits and look far better in high or slash necks than I do In scoop or v necks.

I think it's because I have a long neck and my boobs sit high up on my chest. Can't really explain it well but it's true.

PantPlot · 15/12/2017 16:08

I mean my boobs are naturally situated quite high up on my chest- not a stealth boast about having gravity defying melons.

LoniceraJaponica · 15/12/2017 16:21

“Retailers offer too few necklines, almost all high, almost impossible to find low scoop or V neck or even boat neck”

So, where are all these high necklines then? Everywhere I look I see jumpers with boat necks, very low cut necklines or just very large neck openings. Being scrawny with no boobs and a long thin neck, none of the aforementioned necklines suit me.

“I think their advice still holds true. Basically, ignore trends and dress for your body shape”

I agree. Their advice about wearing properly a fitting bra makes such a huge difference to the finished look. I was always afraid to show off my shoulders, but Trinny and Susannah gave me the courage to buy tops like this to balance out my pear shape.

reallyanotherone · 15/12/2017 16:27

Trinny still goes on about a capsule trouser and a statement lip bless her.

This always gives me a lovely visual of someone rocking an asymmetric look, one trouser leg and a red bottom lip. Stalking doen a catwalk with a cardi over one shoulder...

Does the “smoky eye” go on the same side as the trouser leg or the opposite though?

skunkrat · 17/12/2017 22:17

I vividly remember them pulling that woman’s knickers down - wasn’t she a mum of triplets? She was mortified

Rosenspants · 18/12/2017 11:51

I think they just lost their way. I used to love the programmes and books...it was when they started dabbling in commenting on relationships and the peep show stuff with a camera on body parts behind a screen (remember that?) that I started to feel sick. I didn’t see the knicker pulling episode (horrific) but there was plenty of bosom grabbing in some of what I watched.
Basically, I loved their original stuff and learnt so much from it. Shame it all went wrong.

greenhairymonster · 18/12/2017 12:09

“I think their advice still holds true. Basically, ignore trends and dress for your body shape”

I sort of agree - without keeping an eye to trends you can look very dated, unless you are someone who suits very classic clothing and I am not one of those people - it screams dull to me.

I also have big boobs and wear a polo neck - I have a long neck and narrow shoulders. I think their advice was a great place to start but being a slave to their advice, is as bad as being a slave to fashion - enjoy what you wear, it's just clothes.
