Tammy, I'm also struggling to adjust to a post-children shape. My rib cage has widened which means my waist isn't particularly defined anymore. I also have a c-section 'apron' - I can't wear anything clingy in the tummy area as it shows it up so badly. Sad

The green peacoat is stunning! It's a colour that really suits me.

botemp · 17/12/2017 19:29

Tammy and Boldly, I think it's extra tough if you're still in flux somewhat and you're waiting on the body to settle at a natural weight. From my experience you can get bogged down with getting things you feel you need, very practical and pragmatic but I think you need to throw the rulebook out now and then and go for pieces that are maybe not the most practical or sensible but you absolutely love because they're a certain colour, fit, etc., the pieces that bring a bit of joy back into your wardrobe. You usually end up wearing those to death over the practical and sensible stuff.

@ilovecherries, I have to amend my list, I mistakenly mentioned Dolce Vita from Diorific but that's their orange toned red, you'll want the Marylin. I had a bit of time to waste this afternoon and had a good nose at the counters and Burberry Poppy Red could also be a contender with very nice packaging if you like something a bit contemporary and discreet. I also tried, and fell in love, unfortunately, with L25 from Sisley, it's their pinky/blue based red and it's such a lovely colour. I always forget I shouldn't be trying out Sisley lipsticks, they have a nostalgic smell like my mother's lipsticks, faintly waxy, so my resilience gets weakened immensely. It's still on my lips though after dinner which included soup so it's performing quite well, so I may just have to go get it.

All this talk of pea coats has reminded me, I actually own one! Blush From Comptoir even, it's in the 'to sell' pile but it's missing a decorative button so I need to go see if I still saved it somewhere, otherwise, I'll just remove another one and pretend it's a Celine Grin. Can't tell the colour at the moment, I thought it was purple-ish but looks more navy now Confused but it's a 100% woven thick cotton so much more versatile, from memory it stood up really well in the rain.

ProperLavs · 17/12/2017 19:52

Lucky you bo.ooh hadn't thought about heavy duty cotton.

I am rather liking the effect "the ordinary" retin is having on my skin. I'm pleasantly surprised. I have been using ret A for years but I would say this stuff is having a very good effect with no irritation.
I have ordered some stuff from them for my terrible eye issue.

Now you see and I can see myself in a navy peacoat and red lippy definitely.

botemp · 17/12/2017 20:56

I'm a massive skincare nerd and was very excited when TO first launched but I've been nothing but tepid at best about their products and more than a bit annoyed with the constant sciencewashing and terrible availability of their products. The 2% Retinoid complex (renamed into whatever now) was ok but it didn't work as well as what I was using before (and I tested it for an extended period of time, roughly a year) The newest Retinol 5% in Squalane will be used up and then I'm going back to the expensive stuff that actually worked for me consistently and was pleasant to use.

I don't know if I'm lucky with my pea coat, it's too big for me currently and considering I haven't worn it in a few years I think it's best to sell it on but Comptoir doesn't have any stores locally so it's not a popular brand. I think I'll be sitting on it quite a bit and it's too little money to sell on Vestiaire (their commision is extortionate for low priced items, it's hardly worth listing).

Mamia15 · 17/12/2017 20:58

Properlavs - Superdry comes up slightly small but the 10 is fine on me (I wear jumpers underneath) - think you need to try these on instore to be sure.

Mamia15 · 17/12/2017 21:01

A tip for those who like wearing strong coloured lipsticks - invest in a lip primer, worth every penny as even the cheap ones last ages and there's no bleeding/feathering.

ProperLavs · 17/12/2017 21:05

THe 5% in squalene is making a noticeable difference to the texture of my skin. It’s funny how different products work for different people. I have tried products that others have raved about and found them meh, so I was surprised that this worked. My skin is super soft and hydrated when I wake up with this.
Do you think you could dish out the names of a few companies/ brands that you rate as being good?
There’s a super dry military style pea coat on eBay in a medium and i’m Sorely tempted. I need to feed my bad goat buying habitWink

ilovecherries · 17/12/2017 21:17

Oh, rouge geisha, Botemp? I was looking at that today, but the Sisley lady was a bit snooty so I crept away without trying it.

quirkychick · 17/12/2017 21:44

Oh, yes please. Talk to me about retinol. I've just started using La Roche-Posay, as it's been recommended lots, I'm usually quite a low maintenance/natural product girl, but thought I'd give it a go.

botemp · 17/12/2017 22:17

Most of my skincare chat is on the Fantastic Skincare thread and there's a few info sheets of mine that are generally helpful too but I haven't made one about Retinol specifically yet, I think.

My skin is super soft and hydrated

LesserSpottedLurker · 17/12/2017 22:35

I've been reading the body type posts with interest.

Although I've not put my measurements into a calculator yet, I did compare them to a French sewing pattern I'm planning on making next, and it was a bit of a shock Xmas Blush

Unfortunately my natural pearness has been made worse by pregnancy weight gain, and I currently measure across 4(!!) sizes on the pattern size chart (orageuse.com/boutique/blouse-helsinki/ if anyone is interested).

Short of a tonne of lipo, I don't think I will have a Parisian body.

On the plus side, all the talk of leather leggings is making me determined to get back into my pre pregnancy Michael Kors suede trousers. I just need to avoid the Xmas Biscuit

DAY 18 - DAY 18 - DAY 18 - DAY 18

Le Hoodie

A hoodie, yes, seriously, a hoodie. Granted this is a bit of a microtrend that's slowly emerging but it seems to be catching on in Paris with some momentum. The simple plain sweatshirt, sans hoodie, is already an established staple, be it in grey, cropped, slightly fitted, and generally a thinner fabric (but still soft). I highly suspect the hoodie is taking a similar foothold.

It's predominantly worn with very formal tailored pieces to dress down those shaper lines, and probably keep warm too but comfort is not the main motivator. Albeit a nice added bonus. The plainer the better, and it appears initially they're sticking to familiar territory with grey.

There is some experimentation happening beyond the familiar, both in terms of colour, be it in a monochromatic scheme, or in colour contrast to emphasise the difference in unfitted and extremely tailored. They remain, however, decidedly plain when everything else isn't.

Undoubtedly the hoodie is already quite familiar, especially with the athleisure trends that have reigned for so long, but it's definitely worth exploring within the context of more formal pieces to take the edge of the severity of those.

I like the look of that site Lesser, never considered French patterns to be a thing. I like the look of the tuxedo trousers. Haven't sown since my teens though when, as ever, my ambitions were greater than my skills and available machinery. I was useless with patterns, always retrofitting them.

I'd be all over the chart on that one too with my measurement. For online shopping I find for me the waist measurement is key, the rest usually fits unless it's a really sharply cut/mannish fit.

LesserSpottedLurker · 17/12/2017 23:29

@botempt I love the hoodies, and the more fitted sweatshirts. Definitely a very easy style to adopt and play with.

The tuxedo trousers are ace, although I've got my heart set on making the perfect pair of flannel wide legged trousers that would look elegant with a pair of Stan Smith's and slouchy jumper completely ignoring my short ass, pear shaped body type!

There are a growing number of French indy sewing pattern houses now, with more doing patterns in English as well which is great.

The following blogger (who is amazing!) Has a great round up houseofpinheiro.com/2017/03/the-wonderful-world-of-french-sewing.html

I was going to recommend my fav designer, however she seems to have taken the majority of her patterns off line. I'm hoping it's just a blip as she updates the shop!

Bloomed · 18/12/2017 00:41

Thanks for the peacoat recommendation bo. I'll have a look!
I like the idea of hoodies: I will be looking for some supersoft thin ones. I saw someone in a very intricate bomber jacket with one underneath last week and it was very cool. I have an inherited black silk evening jacket with embroidery and sequins which might look interestingly dressed down with a thin hoodie.

ProperLavs · 18/12/2017 06:27

yes squalene is good, I have used it alone for a long time, but something in this formula is different. it's not just the squalene. Who knows. If I look better on it then hooray!

quirkychick · 18/12/2017 07:07

Thanks for the skincare info, bo, I will look up that skincare thread too. I already do the sunscreen, but could probably do with a better one. I'm 47 and have good skin, probably due to genetics, good diet and sunscreen! So I would definitely vouch for that.

I'm reading Day 18, in erm, a grey hoodie. Over pyjamas, so not sure that counts. I like a hoodie under my biker jacket, and I have a Guess leather blazer type jacket that would look similar. It's probably still too cold today for hoodie and jacket Sad, still freezing outside this morning.

botemp · 18/12/2017 10:27

I should probably get myself a hoodie

Lesser Flowers those links are amazing and so helpful. Considering my perpetual shorts issues I'll be keeping an eye on the summer collections. Although I could possibly turn those tuxedo pants into shorts, couldn't I? I know there are some amazing fabric stores in Paris, I'm sure I can find a nice length of chambray somewhere... Quick question is there a subset of petite patterns or something? All the patterns seem to start a UK8 only some have a 6, it seems odd for the French as they usually start at a 6 and sometimes will even have a 4 in stores.

Bloomed, were you the one looking for thin sweatshirts to wear under blazers before? I found some in the American Vintage outlet that look good, had been meaning to post but forgot about them again.

Drool, that American Vintage sweatshirt is gorgeous. I might have a grey jumper problem, second only to a navy jumper problem Grin.

Bloomed · 18/12/2017 13:15

Oh yes Bo that looks great! Thanks.

TossDaily · 18/12/2017 13:17

I love those American Vintage sweatshirts. The high crew neck most sweatshirts have is very unflattering on me.

Those slash necks are way better.

Tammy and boldly forgive me if you've tried this already but Pilates is the greatest thing for the postbaby unwelcome changes. I also had that weird expanded ribcage thing and general wrecked abs/pelvic muscles. You need a decent instructor, someone who does Stott pilates. Sorry to barge in but I'm really evangelical about it! (Also, I believe French women are keen on Pilates, in keeping with the thread Smile )

TossDaily · 18/12/2017 14:50

Well, Parisiennes, I'm getting ready for my big Christmas night out and I'm putting all these tips into practice.

I've got my red dot in the corner of my eyes, my short dark red nails, my fringe, my red ankle boots and a good squirt of niche French scent.

I think I'm all set!
