I'm posting early tonight and slightly different to the usual norm as I've just felt an ovarian cyst rupture when cycling home just now. I know the pain will only progress from this point on so I'm putting this up and then getting in the one bearable position with a hot water bottle before it hits its peak and whilst I'm still somewhat coherent. Don't worry I'll be fine, par for the course and all that.

DAY 15 - DAY 15 - DAY 15 - DAY 15

“la roussitude”

Many have mentioned your envious fair redhead colouring and asked whether your counterparts exist in France. Yes, they most certainly do, though most seem to stem from Britanny. Style wise they're quite envied in Paris as almost exotic beauties, in Northern France they're more stigmatised (I've been told). Anyhow, my most favourite examples, Isabelle Huppert and the sadly deceased Sonia Rykiel both show(ed) an attitude to style that truly takes the level of defiance up a notch. Especially when it comes to dressing to age standards.

Isabelle Huppert is probably helped along by a stylist but regardless her appearance and the attitude with which she poses shows a love of garments and style that makes the best of her tiny stature and she certainly doesn't shy away from bold colour. Her Instagram also has some lovely captured moments of her outfits.

Fantastic actress too, obviously.

The illustrious Sonia Rykiel can be seen as one of the founders of current day Parisian insouciance attitude to style. Her fashion heavily broke the barriers of prim and proper in favour of clothes women wanted to wear, and her legendary hair surely gave others the courage for the low maintenance locks that are so synonymous with Parisian style. Knitwear really was her thing, reinventing the mariner stripes in a wild array of colour, colour was everywhere in her work. Whereas she was often spotted boldly in all black with her hair like a crown atop it. Usually a touch too much fur. She wasn't scared to be rough with fabrics, probably the first to leave denim with raw edges and make luxurious fabrics ordinary as long as it moved with the body. It always spoke of a joie de vivre and youth regardless of age.

One of the loveliest tributes still remains the surprise fashion show that was tacked onto her last collection before she retired after 40 years where 30 highly influential designers paid homage by presenting their take on her legacy. Full coverage of the show here, you'll have to click through to the end for the surprise show starts at around pic 79.

Hope you feel better soon Bo Flowers

quirkychick · 14/12/2017 21:49

Hope you feel better soon,bo.

Lovely pictures, as always. My Parisian friend when I did A level french, was tall and red haired with a kind of edgy cool. I never understand the anti-ginger attitude some people have in the UK, red hair can be so stunning!

ProperLavs · 14/12/2017 21:49

Take care bo what a star you are x

AdelicaArundel · 14/12/2017 22:09

Flowers Botemp
Hope you feel better soon.
I have learned so much from your generous posts on here....it has been fascinating.
I know that people on the last thread mentioned a blog....but I would find it fascinating to listen to a talk (TedX style?) from you.
Your architect's eye for lines and dimensions is fascinating.

Thank you

AdelicaArundel · 14/12/2017 22:10

God! three times fascinating. I actually do know other words Grin such as riveting, tantalising, engrossing, entertaining, educational.....

MidLifeCrisis2017 · 14/12/2017 22:36

...botastic

Cromwell1536 · 14/12/2017 22:46

Gosh, bo, a ruptured cyst sounds awful. I had an ovary, fallopian tube and their accompanying cyst removed a couple of years ago precisely to avoid rupture. Really hope you feel better soon (do you need medical attention?) and thank you for the fascinating posts.

Auldspinster · 15/12/2017 06:12

Hope you feel better soon Bo!

I love Sonia Rykiel designs but sadly I'm too poor for the clothing. I have a lovely cotton Sonia Rykiel bag from her collaboration with H&M and a couple of perfumes which are confusingly similarly named, Sonia Rykiel woman is a chypre in the vein of Mitsouko and Femme.

Auldspinster · 15/12/2017 06:18

Oh and what I meant to add about Paris and redheads- I went on a school trip to Paris and Normandy in 1988 and remember that our party had a particularly high proportion of redheads (Scottish, natch). They attracted a lot of double takes as it was probably unusual to see so many flame haired lasses in one placeSmile.

LazyDailyMailJournos · 15/12/2017 06:24

I love red hair. I also don't understand why it attracts such a lot of criticism - sorry "banter" Hmm I have a friend who has a little girl with the most gorgeous rose-gold coloured hair; it's absolutely stunning. Wee mite is still in nursery and already getting comments from staff and parents about being "ginger". How blinkered and how sad. I suspect there is also some jealousy at play as well as she is lovely with the most perfect skin and complexion. Fortunately her Mum is a tough cookie and I've no doubt she'll grow up with good self-esteem and also being able to defend herself, but how sad that she has to just because of her hair colour.

Loving botastic as our new MN adjective!!

I am on the hunt for a rich chocolate brown jumper - ideally with a draped or cowl neck. I don't know why I have decided I want one, but I do, so the search begins!!

LunaTheCat · 15/12/2017 07:17

Oh Bo hope you feel better soon. Ruptured cysts are terribly painful. I hope you have some decent drugs from la pharmacie.
I too have appreciated your expertise.
I am blonde and blue eyed, fair skin. I am never sure what red lipstick 💄 I should go for - tried Ruby Woo and just too much!

AuldAlliance · 15/12/2017 07:24

Bo I hope you are feeling better. It was good of you to post in those circumstances.

Re red hair, I was driving to work the other day (well, sitting in a traffic jam on the way into town), when I saw a red-haired girl of about 20 on her scooter whizzing down the pavement beside the ring road.

She turned round to look at something, and I was struck by how beautiful she was. She had long, blonde/red hair, pale skin and very fine features, and was wearing a well-cut dark green coat. Something about her hair flying in the wind and the grace of her movements just reminded me of this thread...

LazyDailyMail, I've been looking at this, though it's not exactly chocolate brown.

LazyDailyMailJournos · 15/12/2017 07:27

Ooh I love it Auld. It's not the colour I was looking for, but it would work on me anyway. Do you know if they do sales at all - is it worth hanging on to see if there are Boxing Day reductions?

AuldAlliance · 15/12/2017 07:33

LazyDailyMail I've not bought enough from them to know whether they do reductions or when.

I do have a jumper dress from there, though, and it's gorgeous quality, so their knitwear is worth it compared to some places that sell wool mixed with acrylic/polyester for similar prices.

I don't know anything about this website, but I had a quick google to see if I could find a code and this came up: www.vouchercodes.co.uk/celtic-sheepskin.co.uk?rc=5053313
Might be worth trying...

LazyDailyMailJournos · 15/12/2017 07:42

Brill - thank you.

I have come to the conclusion that I am going to have to learn to knit because nobody is doing the necklines that I want. There is very little out there if you don't want polo or crew necked stuff. The jumpers that I have found which are v or lower round neck, seem to be very thin and oversized and at the same time, boxy. I wonder how many people actually look good in them?

prettybird · 15/12/2017 08:10

LazyDailMail - I'm on Celtic Sheepskin's mailing list and they do seem to do lots of offers/sales. In fact there was one that expired yesterday that was for a £10 gift voucher if you spent more than £50, and they do regular 15% off offers.

Looks like they do a nice fine merino crew neck with a lower neck. I too don't like a crew neck that is too high and so truncates my neck. Even though I knit, I wouldn't knit something that fine - it would take forever Shock

prettybird · 15/12/2017 08:11

(Or Celtic & Co as it is known now)

AdelicaArundel · 15/12/2017 08:36

Auld that's a lovely jumper.....tempted

botemp · 15/12/2017 11:19

I'm ok! I have PCOS so it happens about once a year to me, it wasn't that bad this time, or I'm just able to manage it better now. I'm not quite sure, I was in a massive panic the first time it happened as I thought it was possibly appendicitis and probably worked my self up beyond what it would otherwise have been. Miraculously managed a bit of sleep tonight so it's a big improvement from the last time. Thanks for all the concern and flowers, it really wasn't necessary.

Lazy, I'm Shock that it's the staff and parents of the children who are making the comments (and ultimately cultivating that in the children). It's especially hard on boys I feel, and it doesn't seem to stop when they grow up much either.

Midlife, I've thought of a few more boobed women. The formidable Catherine Deneuve is older (always much older than I think) and she's definitely dressing in defiance of her younger days but she's essentially a short waisted apple with boobs. It's more traditional French chic mixed with the odd leopard print, but for those with a similar figure it is good silhouette inspiration.

Josephine Le Baume (another fab redhead, but I'd mentioned her previously) is like Kate Moss' wacky French cousin, but that may be since she's photographed performing or at festivals mostly. Her weight fluctuates, she was quite thin as a model (but still with a chest) and these days is a bit fuller. She's very much an inverted triangle (like most models are, male designers don't like hips) but always with a proportionally large chest. Still very much French though.

Speaking of knitwear you want, this is one of my biggest bugbears of the fashion industry, their complete lack of investing in technical innovation at the consumer level, it's only ever exploited for their economic gains. It shouldn't be that hard to set up a little knitting printing setup (it's all done by machinery already) so you can choose colours, materials, shape, etc. With fit becoming so standardised (and unflattering to a growing group) it annoys me beyond belief that the 'haute couture' method of creating custom-fitted clothes isn't being democratised.

So glad you are feeling a little better, bo, it sounds miserable. Love your description of Josephine La Baume as Kate Moss' wacky cousin Grin.

I went shopping today in my red scarf and fedora, which felt good. In the interests of buying less but better, I may have bought some Allsaints pleather leggings. I hadn't intended to spend so much but they are super flattering and have a warm, soft lining, I've persuaded dp to get them as my Christmas present too.

ProperLavs · 15/12/2017 14:04

Glad you are feeling better bo, that's good.
I am wondering who I should be looking at celeb-wise for my body shape which is an inverted triangle/high but no waist/ flat chest/ . it's like my legs are attached to my rib cage, so I think I probably have to be careful re the shapes I can wear.
I am truly crap at spotting what shapes other women are, apart from a woman I know who is the most extreme pear shape I have ever seen.

botemp · 15/12/2017 14:32

Inverted triangle examples are a bit hard to find as they're mostly models who are usually exceptionally tall making it different to dress vs. normal/short heights, or they're actresses who are either booby by nature or have gotten them done, which again impacts the way you dress. They always get photoshopped heavily or are extreme posers to emulate the curves they don't really have. It's quite odd really.

Another thing, many, with age and/or through pregnancy, fill out a little over time in the hip area.
