New thread for those of us who would like to let a little je ne sais quoi into our lives...

I love hats. Really suit them too. Where I live, no-one wears hats, ever. Plenty of bobble hats but that's where it stops. So I've redesigned myself to being mainly hatless. In my teens though I gave less shits and wore a bowler hat for a while and a fedora. It was the 90's.

EnidButton · 13/12/2017 14:04

Splat You are properly French now! You've been accepted.

ProperLavs · 13/12/2017 14:22

I've been hunting down a fedora for a while now I love hats!

Onekidnoclue · 13/12/2017 14:24

This thread is a joy! Thank you all for your inspiration. I’m currently sitting on my sofa in bright red lippy, it’s perked me up a treat. Just need to get comfortable enough to wear it out the house.

MidLifeCrisis2017 · 13/12/2017 14:30

Anyone else find that hats don't work with short hair?

quirkychick · 13/12/2017 14:44

I'm in a rediscovered cherry red pashmina scarf. It does look great with a fedora, but not with my parka in the rain! So it's red scarf and grey baker boy today. I need to wear the fedora with a different coat/jacket, I think. I had forgotten how much I like red, it really is a wow colour Smile. Especially on such a grey, rainy day...

Auldspinster · 13/12/2017 14:58

My head has a 63cm circumference so my choice of hats is very limited.

ProperLavs · 13/12/2017 15:03

auld you have a mighty brain!

ProperLavs · 13/12/2017 15:04

I have always adored red, it's been my favourite colour since I can remember. It's not always in fashion though, which causes me great frustration , as it does the summer when it's not a good look!!

botemp · 13/12/2017 15:52

If your hair is very short it can be overwhelming, Midlife, depends on the face though, a highly symmetrical one can carry hats quite well even if no hair is visible where others can be mistaken for a chemo patient.

Proper, I've been lusting after this baby from Maison Kitsune

That is a gorgeous hat, bo. I love that colour.

Proper I always wore a lot of red when I had dark hair, I went blonder (on the way to silver...) and found it hard to wear, although burgundy still looked fine, probably because the blonde wasn't so great on me. Now my hair is really very silver, the red looks great again. Apparently, red is very on trend, too. I have a very lovely raspberry red wool coat, that I don't wear enough as well.

Littlechocola · 13/12/2017 18:51

I love red. Luckily I think it suits me.

botemp · 13/12/2017 19:06

They describe it as burgundy, quirky, but I'd say that it's more a cranberry that leans burgundy IIRC. I do like the resurging promise of cranberry, it's a good red for many unlike the more brick toned burgundy that's been around for a bit now. I've seen some great greens trickling in too (image from Rodebjer, all cashmere, suggested as 'essential' home wear Xmas Hmm, it's on the sales watch list, I may consider the high asking prices it if it ever gets priced down to 70% off), who knows perhaps we'll finally see a bit of brown return too.

Red was more a trend last year that's only really catching on now, currently, it's much more about maroon paired with pink. It's actually a really nice combo. It's being pushed for a rollout S/S 2018 but I suspect the high street will push it for the A/W season.

Since we all have red pigment in our skin, red tends to suit most Littlechocola, it's just a matter of finding a shade of red that suits. I think brunettes do have it easier in general with reds.

I do like the hat bo. I had been playing safe with my searches and looking at blacks and tans.
I do like maroon/burgundy colours too.
How exciting you getting to go to Paris.
I must say my experiences of the city haven't been great as far as friendly locals are concerned.

ProperLavs · 13/12/2017 19:22

quirky that's great that you can wear red again. I still have dark brown hair amazingly with a little bit of grey bits at the front.
I am off to look at red hats now......

prettybird · 13/12/2017 20:36

I love red too - and as long as it is a an orange red or a true red it suits me (dark reddish blonde, periodically coloured with thick red and warm blonde highlights).

I have a fabulous long red coat that dh bought me over 10 years ago that I get compliments about every time I wear it (which in winter is as often as possible as it cheers me up Xmas Smile).

I also have a large burgundy pashmina which I've taken to wearing more often as a result of this thread Xmas Smile

Cromwell1536 · 13/12/2017 21:38

I'm enjoying this thread too. Bit doubtful about the fedora'd beauties though. Will defo try invisible heels, they sound great.

My latest find is Adolfo Hernandez. Spanish rather than French, so perhaps not entirely in the spirit of this thread, but nice classic clothes with an edge. I have a pair of their eco-leather trousers in brown and feel a total bad-ass in them! Somehow they work with heels and flats, really feminine silk blouses or mannish jerseys.
In the meantime, does anyone know where I can find shoes like these from Max Mara for, ooh, around 20% of the price?? Sorry, I can't seem to copy and paste the image.

JaneJeffer · 13/12/2017 22:12

There's a French drama on C4 right now. I'm checking out the style!

botemp · 13/12/2017 22:36

I've never heard of an Adolfo Hernandez, do you mean Dominguez by any chance, Cromwell? We used to have one of those in Antwerp, remember getting some nice things from there, it was quite dressy though, especially their Christmas collections.

I tried on these boots from IRO the other day and they're similar to the MM, the price isn't too far off but they were marked down 40% which wasn't bad at all considering the RRP is already quite low on them, especially for IRO but they were a bit wide around the ankle for me. They're out there in black leather with a wooden heel too which I quite like the look of... probably not what you were looking for, Zara had something similar in but also ankle boots but they sold out really quick. COS will usually have something like that but clunkier.

DAY 14 - DAY 14 - DAY 14 - DAY 14

Tee-shirt

You'd be surprised how much effort Parisians put into finding the perfect t-shirt, slightly slouchy but not boxy, which usually means it's worn slightly oversized but still fittef. However, to wear it successfully a small modification is usually made by folding up the sleeves, which appears simple enough but a lot of thought has gone into it.

Now there's reason to this method that goes beyond showing off a bit more arm. For one it makes the arm appear slimmer by contrasting it with more volume. Secondly, and probably more importantly, it helps create those flattering diagonal lines that draw to the waist.

So here's the crude diagram, when we see a t-shirt laid flat it already has the dynamic lines we want but we only really get those lines if we walk around with our arms out akimbo. As demonstrated in pics 2 and 3 in the post above a very similar t-shirt on similar models, the unfolded version appears less dynamic and the eye travels horizontally, making the chest and shoulders seem broader. Great if you're a man, though even they benefit from a gentler angled fold now and then, for whom the garment was originally designed, however, the trapezoid body shape is a less sought after look in most women.

It's simple enough to try and experiment with which angle is the most flattering, for some a single fold is more flattering than several that taper sharply, in others, a roll-up may be the key. 4 small hand stitches easily keeps it in place if the fabric isn't sturdy enough. So much more flattering, and it need not be restricted to a white palette, plenty of other shades to choose from.

Dominguez is right - a day spent on distinctly non-stylish chores and errands has shredded my brain. Thanks for the boots - think it's the combination of the solid heel and elegant front that I find attractive in the shoe though.

I'm not at all sure about t-shirts, tbh. It's quite hard for anyone to make them look good. Those gentlemen pictured are hilarious! like a rabid Brexiter's nightmare of what a 'European' looks like..Thank you, Bo, you've cheered me up. Am off to show the pic to my husband.

Bloomed · 14/12/2017 01:00

That khaki shirt has such a nice flow.

ProperLavs · 14/12/2017 06:38

I disagree re the t-shirts actually. i think it's pretty hard to look bad in a plain T, especially when paired with a jacket.
I like the idea of rolling up the sleeves a bit.
Thanks for day 14 bo
