Can we talk leather/pleather trousers and leggings please?

I seem to remember ages ago there was a brand that many were raving about but can't for the life of me think what it is.

Who wears leather trousers or variants of? Can you recommend a make?

Is 50 too 'old' for all this malarky anyway?

Baujken were the leather ones that seem to come top of the list. I'm also 50+ and hope to get some for Christmas...although my 20something daughter did give me a 'Really!' when I mentioned them...and then will be borrowing when I'm not looking.

WomblingThree · 29/11/2017 07:45

Aren’t they sweaty? I’m just imagining (one of many) hot flushes in pleather trousers 😥.

FlindersKeepers · 29/11/2017 07:51

For pleather leggings, Next.
They do 4 lengths I think, they wash well and look more expensive than they are. Not sweaty, but also less warm than they look.

AuntieStella · 29/11/2017 07:52

Judge your appearance by your mirror, not your calendar.

I don't wear plastic trousers (whether they are made to look a bit like leather or not) because I find them too sweaty - and that's been true since I was in my teens and couldn't afford leather.

I'm not sure what the current best places to try for leather trousers are (I got my last pair abroad), but as they might need a replacement soon I'm hoping to spot recommendations.

ProperLavs · 29/11/2017 08:54

Luckily I don't suffer from hot flushes!
Thanks for ideas, I'll look them up.

How often do people get leather leggings dry cleaned? I like the look of them, but not the idea of regular dry cleaning!

ibuiltahomeforyou · 29/11/2017 09:24

I love my pleather leggings! I have a seven month old and they make me feel a bit edgy Grin plus they wipe clean.

Mine are the Next ones everyone was raving about on here!

Elledorado · 29/11/2017 09:33

Good point; do you have to dryclean real leather leggings?? Mine are fake and machine washable

expatmigrant · 21/12/2017 10:12

Bought the pleather ones from River Island this week and I love them. They really do look like leather and are very comfy. I actually had to go down a size to get a nice fit. Unlike the ones we use to wear 20 years ago they seem to have improved on the fabric and are not sweaty at all...and I wore them out for Christmas shopping the other day. Really like the way they can be dressed down or up just like a nice pair of black skinny jeans.

chloechloe · 21/12/2017 10:38

Grin builtahome. Top of my Xmas list is for my children to stop wiping their noses and sticky hands on me. Maybe I should ask for a pair of pleather pants instead!

Glitteryfrog · 21/12/2017 10:55

Zara slightly cropped ones with seams and zips at the ankle.

shopafrolic · 21/12/2017 11:12

I have leather skinnies from Joseph and a Helmut Lang pair from TK Maxx. After reading about it online I machine wash my Joseph ones on a hand wash cycle and they have survived well. The leather is a bit more matte now but I prefer that anyway. Pleather versions were either too hot and sweaty or too cold for me so i’m glad I bit the bullet and ordered the real thing. I wear them at least once a week though so the CPW is good.
As for the age thing - I am 45 and will wear them until I don’t feel good in them anymore.

expatmigrant · 21/12/2017 15:17

Well I'm 53 and have no worries about wearing them. I'm having a HL pair for Christmas but will probably keep wearing my pleathers for mooching round the shops in. Find them neither too hot or too cold.

hareagain · 21/12/2017 21:22

Are you ladies all very slim though? I'm 44 and in one of my 'heavy' phases where I'm a good 12 and would possibly feel a bit mutton like. I do appreciate a size 12 is not a biggie in itself but it's the size for me where my bum sags and need to be careful.

expatmigrant · 21/12/2017 23:33

I'm usually a size 10 but went down to a size 8. I find that they actually smooth out all the bumps and because they are quite dull, nothing is accentuated by light. I think you will look good in a size 12 too. They really just fit like a nice pair of jeans. I wear mine with ankle boots or knee lengths and a jumper but will wear them with a nice blouse on Christmas day. I always use my DC for the mutton test. Got the thumbs up and my two never hold back in giving me their opinion.

Bloomed · 22/12/2017 02:00

Am looking for the recommended next ones but perhaps they've sold out. I may try river island. I want some quite thin ones.

hareagain · 22/12/2017 07:26

I think the thing to do then is to try a few pairs on. I'll be brave and stop walking past them!

expatmigrant · 22/12/2017 08:27

The Next ones are sold out online and I could only get they only had the blue ones left in shop in my size. I think the RI ones are much nicer anyway. RI have 2 different pairs. I tried a few sizes in both. Try them on, you might be surprised how good you look in them.

Kitsharrington · 22/12/2017 08:32

I wear cropped paper-bag waist ones from Topshop last year. The cut is super flattering and they go with everything.

silkpyjamasallday · 22/12/2017 09:29

I have several pairs of leather leggings and trousers, my favourites are from M&S believe it or not, just a leather panel on the front the rest is just thick stretchy material. I'm 23 but plan to wear them forever, they are so versatile and can be dressed up or down. I only wear them in winter so have them dry cleaned before I put them away on summer then they are ready when autumn comes again.

AnaViaSalamanca · 22/12/2017 09:41

Is there a major difference between legging type ones (like with elastic waistband) and the ones that are like normal trousers? I have never worn leggings in my life. Are they going to stretch more?

DameDoom · 22/12/2017 12:17

Leather leggings have a lining so they are not in the least sweaty. I always wear a panty-liner to keep them fresh.
I also got belt loops put on mine which have been a godsend.
They are more versatile than jeans and only look mutton if they are styled a la Jane McDonald, otherwise they are a wardrobe basic.
50 is definitely not too old.

Tipsntoes · 22/12/2017 12:31

I have coated leggings from Next - designed to look like jeans with stitching, belt loops, pockets etc.

They're just coated cotton and so comfy, but other people refer to them as my leather trousers. I'm 48.

neveradullmoment99 · 22/12/2017 12:46

I also have Nexts coated leggings. They look like leather and are an amazing fit and wash really well. They are unfortunately sold out now. You may get them in store though. I have them in black and they are so comfy.

neveradullmoment99 · 22/12/2017 12:48

They are not sweaty at all. I remember having faux leather years ago and OMG i was drenched with sweat. Binned them after one wear. The next ones are breathable imo and are good in cold weather as they are like thick jeans.
