Are GHDs really worth the extra money??

Dd has very long thick wavy hair that she straightens every morning. Currently has some treseme straighteners. Was wondering about GHDs for Christmas as a couple of friends have said how fabulous they are.

The ones I've seen on Amazon specifically for thick hair are £100 and I'm just wondering if they really are worth the extra money? Are they quicker? Straighter? Please enlighten me!!

he told me that the guy who created GHDs has the patent for the technology inside them. That's why all hairdressers virtually have used them because they (used) to last for years. The brand was sold (so the name went over to the new brand name owner) but NOT the technology (which made them the good, highly robust, fastest ever to heat up straighteners going). The guy who owns that technology still has gone on to make his own product called Cloud Nine

Wow, is that true?!

My hairdresser told me she bought new ghds recently which were crap and told me to buy second hand original ones from eBay if mine ever died. Mine have been going since 2004-fingers crossed they last a bit longer!

MintChocAddict · 05/12/2017 22:11

I second the earlier poster who suggested SHE straighteners. I've had GHDs for years and when they gave up recently I couldn't justify the money for a new set.

After much googling and reading of reviews I ordered a set of wide plate SHE straighteners. They're just as good as, if not better than my old GHDs!

Also read online that the SHE owner is the ex partner of GHD fella. Not sure if this is an urban myth or not but they're almost identical in look and performance so maybe something in it.

I brought my GHDs in 2009, and thought they were recently not working well, so brought a pair of Cloud Nines - they're in the box to go back as they switch themselves off with every pass through my hair.
I brought the Cloud Nines as I had also heard that the original GHD creator had taken his patent with him to the new company, but in comparison to the GHDs, I thought the Cloud Nines felt really flimsy and cheap, and that was before I had the power problems.
My hunt for a replacement straightener continues. The cheaper models aren't much use on my thick wavy hair.

My hair is very thick and wavy, I use the Remington wide plate straighteners. For me they're the best around. I've had Ghd's and just didn't find them very good at all. The new 'floating plate' by Remington are also really good.

I will try slower moves and report back, thanks!

Sidge · 06/12/2017 17:43

I've never used any other straighteners but I love my GHDs.

They have good customer service too - mine developed a fault 2 weeks after the 2 year warranty ran out and they honoured it and sent me a brand new pair, no quibbles.

Sorry, can't possibly be true. No-one would buy a company without the 'technology' that made the brand. It would not happen. This is just marketing spiel from a rival company.

Up until a year ago I had a £30 pair of hair strainers and they were fine for my thick with a wave hair. My partner spoilt me to a pair of GHD'S and they've changed my hair routine massively! Couldn't live without them now.

Myreputation · 07/12/2017 07:10

I replaced my ghds with a Remington pair for about £25 and they are brilliant. Would never get ghds again.

Canadianviews · 07/12/2017 09:31

Im sure the people saying that the cheap Remington ones or such the like are better can’t possibly have really curly/ frizzy hair or must have some of the newer GHDs that apparently aren’t as good. I’ve been using GHDs for 16 years, my current pair are about 4 years old, there is no way the old l, cheaper ones back in the day that I used before GHDs were better. They didn’t get my hair nearly as sleek or straight and if they did it only lasted 5 mins!

IceBearRocks · 07/12/2017 09:42

Had Ghd's for about 8 years... Recently moved to Cloud 9 ..much better straightener..hopefully will last longer than the previous GHDs u had which was less than 2years !

hendricksyousay · 07/12/2017 15:36

I've got the wide ones for very thick curly hair . They work well and I can do my whole head in about 15 mins . I've had years of practice though . They must be 25 years old and still going strong although admittedly only used 2 x a month or so .

Megsmcgoo · 07/12/2017 15:39

A friend has cloud 9 and wouldn’t go back to Ghds, she thinks they’re far superior. I currently have ghds that are 10 years old, still in great working condition but I think i’ll Go for cloud 9 when they bite the dust

pinyata · 07/12/2017 15:48

I have had my GHD's for coming up 12 years at Xmas.

You may get ones that do just as good a job however they are unlikely to last the length of time GHD's do.

ProperLavs · 07/12/2017 16:01

I trod on my old pair of ghd's years ago- and broke them. Gutted. have been wondering whether to replace them with new ones, but now I won't bother

fantasmasgoria1 · 07/12/2017 18:41

I tried them and they were no better than others I have tried! So long as they heat up to 230 they do the job! I would not spend money on ghds but would not spend as little as a tenner on them either! £30 or above and I got good ones!

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 07/12/2017 19:40

I love my GHDs but they are old ones. I have super thick disobedient hair and it's the only thing that works.

runningoutofjuice · 07/12/2017 19:51

Wouldn't have anything else. Mine refused to switch on a couple of weeks ago so I sent them off to a company called GHD Repairs and they repaired them for a fixed fee of £24.99. Glad I didn't go out and spend £130 on a new pair. So if your old ones fail and you're not sure about the new ones, get them repaired for a fraction of the cost.

Mercedes519 · 07/12/2017 19:55

Cloud 9’s here after a recommendation from my hairdresser. I heard the same story as a PP so we may have the same hairdresser!

Great straighteners and....THEY TURN THEMSELVES OFF. No more burning down the house for me Blush

DaenerysismyQueen · 07/12/2017 20:03

I used to have them but replaced them with Remingtons. The Remingron ones are honestly better.
