Are GHDs really worth the extra money??

Dd has very long thick wavy hair that she straightens every morning. Currently has some treseme straighteners. Was wondering about GHDs for Christmas as a couple of friends have said how fabulous they are.

The ones I've seen on Amazon specifically for thick hair are £100 and I'm just wondering if they really are worth the extra money? Are they quicker? Straighter? Please enlighten me!!

I don't actually know because I've nothing to compare them to but I've been using my GHDs daily for 10 years, hair is in great condition too.

SellFridges · 21/11/2017 18:10

I have Cloud 9’s now after two pairs of ghD’s. They’re better than the newer ghd’s imo. My previous ghd’s did last though - first pair bought in 2003 I think and lasted to 2010. Second pair lasted to this year. Used at least once a day. Sometimes more.

Northernmum100 · 21/11/2017 18:11

Dd has really thick hair and her GHD's are way better than any other straighteners she had before so yes, worth the money

schoolgaterebel · 21/11/2017 18:19

Yes they really are worth the money.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 21/11/2017 18:21

@Worldsworstcook is that the L’Oréal steam pod thing?

ginandnappies · 21/11/2017 18:25

I have the wide GHDs and I really notice a difference if I use someone else’s that aren’t GHDs. My hair stays straighter longer and it’s so much quicker.

Norugratsatall · 21/11/2017 18:26

Nope. Not worth the price. Bought some non GHD straighteners last Xmas for DD2 for£30. They do the business just as well as GHDs.

Paintbox · 21/11/2017 18:53

I hear people say a lot that new ghds are nowhere near as good as old. I’ve had both and my new ones are just as good, I can’t tell any difference at all

Littlepumpkinpie · 21/11/2017 19:25

Cloud 9 all the way

DaisyRaine90 · 21/11/2017 19:26

Nope! My GHD's died in months but I have a crappy pair that have lasted about 5 years.

I am glad I didn't buy a cheap hairdryer though, bought a good one nearly 12 years ago and it's still going strong

AlmostChristmas · 21/11/2017 19:27

Yes. I've got 13 year old GHDs which I wrongly thought were on their way out so bought Cloud 9s. Both very good. For long thick hair definitely go for wide plates!

WaitrosePigeon · 21/11/2017 19:53

The newer GHD’s of the last 5 years or so really are not as good as the ones of 2005ish.

Strokethefurrywall · 21/11/2017 23:29

Yes I've got 3b curls and they have been the best thing ever for me.
I've owned a pair for at least 15 years, my most recent pair have last me 11 years and still going strong.

I couldn't recommend them more highly!

Orangebird69 · 21/11/2017 23:36

They're bloody useless. I have long curly hair that makes me resemble Crystal Tips on a very bad humid day. These are far superior, and cheaper.

lottieandmia22 · 21/11/2017 23:37

Yes they are. They are amazing.

Sailorjerrycherry · 21/11/2017 23:37

My first set lasted about 11 years. My second set lasted exactly a month longer than their warranty Angry. Really not as good as they used to be for the price!

sycamore54321 · 22/11/2017 01:25

As well as views on whether they are technically better or not, there is something wonderful about getting the exact luxury present you want for Christmas. So if she likes GHDs, and it is a surprise present, I would get her GHDs even if maybe some other brand is as good or better.

For what it's worth, I have thick frizz-prone hair and I love my ghds

Canadianviews · 22/11/2017 09:23

No other straighteners have ever straightened my hair as well as GHD’s. My hair is VERY curly/ frizzy! I used cheaper ones before that but they just didn’t keep my hair straight, 30 mins later it would start kinking/ curling again Angry

I’ve had 3 pairs in 15 years so not too bad and the first two only broke really because I was constantly traveling about and had to keep packing them up a few times a week and the cords would get tangled etc. My current pair is about 5 years old and don’t ever get moved about and are still going strong.

I don’t really use them much anymore though, my hair just can’t handle straighteners- instant breakage Sad

Worldsworstcook · 05/12/2017 19:27

Grumpy squirrel

Sorry I didn't see your question! Yes that's them and they are fab!

keeponworking · 05/12/2017 19:39

I have a VERY relevant and important update about GHDs!!!

This is hot off the presses from my hairdresser where they have just replaced all their GHDs. As you know. GHDs USED to be absolutely bloody fantastic.

She told me that the guy who created GHDs has the patent for the technology inside them. That's why all hairdressers virtually have used them because they (used) to last for years. The brand was sold (so the name went over to the new brand name owner) but NOT the technology (which made them the good, highly robust, fastest ever to heat up straighteners going). The guy who owns that technology still has gone on to make his own product called Cloud Nine. So they are 'the old style high quality 'GHDs' but under a different name'.

Hope this all makes sense. I can't vouch for these Cloud Nine ones (although the hairdresser was very happy indeed with them!)

I have an 'old' set of original GHDs. I've left them on before (oops) for an entire day, they're fab. I've had them for over 8 years and they still work as good as ever. So, if I could have that same style of straightener but just under a different name that was as good as the original GHDs, I'd probably go for them if I had to finally replace mine. And unlike the originals, the temperature is also adjustable.

PersianCatLady · 05/12/2017 19:44

A little steam pod is filled with water and the steam pumped through the straighteners
I remember having steam straighteners back in the 1990s before ceramic straighteners were available.

carolhere · 05/12/2017 20:10

They are absolutely fabulous. GHDs are the best!

rowtheboats · 05/12/2017 20:12

I have thick hair and ghd’s are the only straighteners that work!

specialsubject · 05/12/2017 20:41

I have just bought some and I'm not convinced. They don't seem to get as hot as the cheapies and certainly don't straighten on one pass.

What am I doing wrong?

lottieandmia22 · 05/12/2017 21:53

Maybe you're not using them slowly enough? Slowly is key I think. They should get hot though - mine do.
