I'm feeling a bit sorry for myself. Mid thirties, I've put on weight. The past 6 years since becoming a mum has really taken it's toll with interrupted sleep, spots and generally feeling shitty. Any tips please? I would be most grateful. Thanks

Awh OP what sort of tips do you need? Make up? Hair? Clothes? All of it? :)

falange · 19/11/2017 19:05

I’m prone to spotty. Something that helps is cleansing morning and night even if I haven’t had make up on. If I don’t I always get a few big red pimples on my cheeks.

BusterGonad · 19/11/2017 19:05

My biggest tip to make you feel happier about your appearance is to get a good skincare routine, for me it makes me feel more confident and taking that little bit of time to pamper myself makes me happy. In regards to the weight gain you can either try to lose the pounds or learn acceptance and realise that you can still be happy and feel good about yourself a little larger. Always try to dress well (what you feel good in) and a slick of lipstick really makes me feel confident!

TidyLike · 19/11/2017 19:07

I had this phase too, but was back to being hot (ish) by 40 😀 Leaving my abusive ex was a great beautifier. I also tackled my awful, straw-like, once-curly hair by giving up synthetic dyes (after a period au naturel I switched to henna) and doing curly girl method. Also started dressing how I like and not how my ex liked.

Ijustlovefood · 19/11/2017 19:07

Thanks all. I'll be happy with any tips honestly. I'm just starting to look old and I don't feel very fit these days either. Everything is just so hard work. I'm going to give Slimming World a go.

Oh and take a multi vitamin that contains oils, I like primrose and star oils and I only buy the cheap Lidis ones but I love them. My skin care of choice at the moment is Decleor, I got a wonderful set on the QVC website for £45. It had a cleanser, day cream and night balm. I don't usually spend so much but like you I was feeling a bit shit and needed a boost!

TidyLike · 19/11/2017 19:09

Re weight gain, I find that being more healthy/active in general makes me feel better about the way I look even if I don't actually lost weight. So you could focus on getting fit rather than getting thin - the results are faster because you only need one nice brisk walk to feel uplifted!

BusterGonad · 19/11/2017 19:10

Op beware of slimming world because if you don't lose weight you will feel even shitter! The diet industry survives of our insecurities and only exists because diets don't work!!!

Loulou0 · 19/11/2017 19:11

OP I always find having eyebrows, manicure, pedicure and roots done makes me feel polished. Also a light fake tan on my legs.
In winter, a good coat, boots, stylish hat and gloves and a nice bag.

Ijustlovefood · 19/11/2017 19:12

Thanks. I'd like to lose a stone but most importantly for me is I want to be fitter and healthier then hopefully I will look more myself again?

Slimming world is great. Concentrate on eating loads of veg and that will have a great effect on your skin too.

You could add an acid toner to your skin regime a few times a week. I like Ren clarimatte. That really helped with spots for me.

Babababababybel23 · 19/11/2017 19:15

At the end of your shower for as long as you can hack it put your shower as cold as you possibly can. It helps to tighten your skin and pores. I always keep moving and sing something to keep my mind off the cold but it makes your skin feel great Grin

64BooLane · 19/11/2017 19:15

Take a walk every day, definitely. Helps with all the feelings as well as physical well-being. Flowers

Notsooriginalwerther · 19/11/2017 19:22

Well then for make up I always advise a lilac or peach concealer under the eye before foundation and normal concealer as it completely covers dark circles. And definately agree with the other posts, great skin care routine is key, little tan always nice, get out and about and focus on health over weight and then acceptance and love for yourself :)

ProseccoMamam · 19/11/2017 19:26

Okay so with the weight gain the obvious answer will be to eat more healthy and try to exercise more. Joining a group like PP have suggested would be a great start. There are lots of videos and blogs online that could help with beginners work outs and meal preps ect.

A good skincare routine is key, cleanse, tone, moisturise morning and night. Exfoliate and then a face mask 2 times a week. All products need to be for your skin type (plenty of videos and links online to determine what skin type you have)

A new hair cut? Your hair dress will help you find a style if you feel like a change.

Maybe even get some new bits for your wardrobe to boost confidence and give yourself an extra push to look after yourself more.

A simple make up bag, BB cream, powder, mascara and a lippy. It’s amazing what a few bottle of product can do to your self esteem.

I personally like my nails done, so you could try that. If you don’t like long nails then Shellac could be good for you.

That’s all I can think of really, but feel free to ask for any more advice in different things x

chevrechevre · 19/11/2017 19:39

Daily SPF for your face and neck and décolletage if going outdoors. I use La Roche Posay Hydraphase UV Intense Légère SPF 20 all year round, and their Anthelios XL SPF50 ultra-light fluid in the summer/on holiday. And hide from the sun with hats, shade etc.

Nice baths with nice bath things. Candles, nice aromatherapy bubbles or oils etc. Feels very luxe and decadent.

Second the daily walk. Clear your head, get some fresh air, increase your stamina and fitness. It cheers me up no end, even when I’m convinced it won’t.

A good, smart, winter coat that you love and goes with everything. Mine came second hand from a charity shop 20 years ago and I still love it to death and feel great in it.

Get yourself something stupidly soft to snuggle in. Cashmere/soft merino/silk scarf, cardigan, jumper, pyjamas, gloves, whatever. Super soft always feels expensive and delicious and like being spoiled to me. And I find cheaper cashmere (uniqlo, H&M) wears better/bobbles less.

Ijustlovefood · 19/11/2017 19:45

Thank you everyone. I've bought the Ren toner purpledaises. I'm going to continue with walking more, try to eat better and I may try shellac. I never ever get my nails done. Only ever do it myself maybe if I'm going out. I do get my eyebrows done though, they need doing now so I'm going to book an appointment.

Good thread.

I find a squirt of perfume perks me up and makes me feel much more attractive.

MeIAm · 19/11/2017 21:36

Watching for tips. Great thread!

BusterGonad · 19/11/2017 22:12

I also try to coordinate, I bought some grey over the knee suede boots and then got some skinny jeans in more or less the same colour, I feel great in that combo, I also have a shirt with flamingos on and then I realized I had a little cardy in the same colours as the flamingos. I know it sounds obvious but wearing clothes then look pulled together really helps me to feel good. I may be a bit larger than I was 5 years ago but I feel a lot more stylish!

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 19/11/2017 22:19

After you apply blusher dab the brush with serum and tap that over for a nice glow

Nettletheelf · 19/11/2017 22:28

Get a good, light, facial self tanner and stick that on three nights a week. You’ll look better during the cold grey months.

BowlingShoes · 19/11/2017 22:33

Lush Ultrabland cleanser has sorted the spotty skin I started getting in my 30s. I also recommend a moisturiser with hyaluronic acid. I use a cheap one from Lidl.

buckeejit · 19/11/2017 22:47

Double cleansing & spf. Also neat eyebrows-if you have sparse eyebrows then go for micro blading if you can find someone reputable. It makes a world of difference.

I'm a big fan of wearing what suits you - get your colours done & then style & you'll feel more confident picking stuff that suits you. Also finding the shade of red lipstick that suits you is life changing!
