Running gear that looks reasonably stylish on round and plumptious women

Ok - used to run quite a lot. Am planning to restart (have found a running friend) with inaugural run this Friday!!!

But don't want to be an embarrassing eyesore on the roads and feel conspicuous in front of passing pedestrians and cars. Want to feel reasonably self confident despite being size 18, and be able to concentrate on my running and not what I look like!

Where can I find running gear that will look okay on 'generous proportions' - and also what's hot and what's not in sportswear these days (Okay - basically tell me exactly what to wear and where to get it!!)

Highstreet would be good - so I can go into town on Thursday and get some, but also internet sites ....

marks and spencer? no point in spending a bomb if you are going to shrink.

FuglyFatBigRump · 17/04/2007 14:12

Come on - I need help here.

Don't want to cause cars to collide with my current keep fit ensemble

Thanks fishie, but I couldn't find anything flattering in M&S. Seemed all quite close fitting and slinky

I've always worn any old tat for running. The rule is - if it's too scuffy for wearing to do decorating or gardening, then it is ok to wear for running!

margoandjerry · 17/04/2007 14:17

I fit your description - and I run in M&S stuff. I find the slinky material is good. Although it's quite tight-fitting, I follow the Trinny and Susannah gospel of wearing very fitted things rather than baggy things for fear of looking like a big running tent.

The only non-M&S stuff I have is from TK Maxx and I quite like it except that I now discover that it is atrociously naff - it's from Lonsdale. Looks nice but makes me a bit "wrong side of the tracks" apparently

sfxmum · 17/04/2007 14:21

i have some m&s stuff but mainly tops from uniqlo cheap and don't get soaked with sweat. get a good bra there are some fantastic ones these days

Was searching for recommendations for fitness gear for fuller figured women and came across this - not many suggestions on it though, so I am resurrecting this thread to see if anybody has find any good running / gym clobber for the chubbily inclined

Dilettante · 13/01/2009 11:30

3/4 length capri running trousers look good on the fuller figured. Also, if you get stretchy stuff it will see you through a couple sizes down as you lose weight.

3/4 length capri trousers and a comfy running top/T shirt with a lightweight running jacket on top - hides all the bulges but still looks trim and fitted.

Will search for pics.

StepfordKnife · 13/01/2009 11:37

Thanks Dilettante - I tend to find I have to take off my running jacket (which conceals most of my tum) after a mile of running since I get very warm, even on freezing days...so it's the tops I am struggling with most

SandyChick · 13/01/2009 11:41

Sweaty Betty {if you go through this website you get 10% discount)

Its quite expensive i think but i bought a fab pair of 3/4 pants with wicked (sp) fabric for £50 and they are fab and work bit like spanx on the tummy and bottom .

Shame i've only worn them twice Note to self..get to the gym!!!

Dilettante · 13/01/2009 11:41

capri pants

jacket

jacket in XL

I have this one it is ace

these good too

It can be pricey but once you know what you are looking for you can search online for the best deals.

Dilettante · 13/01/2009 11:45

Stepford I have some great running Ts from Sugoi which are loose but still fitted IYKWIM? So they hang nicely but not tents. They are Sugoi ones from sheruns.com I think they do up to size 16.

Have you tried just wearing a vest top and the jacket on top? My running jacket is really very thin, literally a thin nylony thing, I thought I would get hot but its fine in this weather.

Dilettante · 13/01/2009 11:46

sorry sheactive.com not sheruns

Dilettante · 13/01/2009 11:48

Oo oo I know - Helly Hansen running tops or Ron Hill ones, they are longer length (why is so much stuff so short these days?)

Dilettante · 13/01/2009 11:49

helly hansen top

stinkymonkey · 13/01/2009 11:54

No no no not Sweaty Betty. Their 'large' size is only about a 14 at the most, which is quite clearly wrong.

I think with workout gear you need to try it on, esp for running stuff. Sometimes it seems OK, then as soon as you start moving, it starts working its way down your bum (OK maybe that's just me).

Definitely try TK Maxx and and bog standard sports store like JD Sports. Classic stuff like Adidas/Nike looks better than fashiony stuff.

mooseloose · 13/01/2009 11:55

Hi I wear 3/4 length adidas leggings which make me look slim - 14/16 . I got some tops from JJb , adidas, nike 'Run' tops - got that on the front- always stuff on offer, and a high vis green jacket from JJb (tenner) which just covers my bum. i feel nice in it.

StepfordKnife · 13/01/2009 12:01

Thanks - all very useful

OrmIrian · 13/01/2009 12:03

I would recommend running tights. I know they sound terrifying but you can wear a long top if need be and they are really comfy. I'm not exactly sylph like and wear them quite happily.

Mine were adidas I think. Best thing for running I've ever had.

AussieLou · 13/01/2009 12:15

I was a size 22 and am now an 18/20 and have alwys worn the M&S stuff. I wear the 3/4 length slinky yoga pants with layered vests/t shirts and I feel nicly contained and nothing is bouncing around too much but dont feel that I look like a rolled roast.
As for sports bra, I found it really really hard to find one in the Uk for bigger boobs. They were not reinforced enough to prevent facial injuries when running. Got one from Rigy & Peller. FABULOUS!!!! Nothing moves in it.

mooseloose · 13/01/2009 20:51

I tried bravissimo for a bra but none felt that supportive. I now have a shock absorber, but it has left two holes in my back where the strap rubs (although I can't work out wheich bit is rubbing!)

FatLegsHancock · 13/01/2009 20:55

Any suggestions for those of us that really need to cover our arse? Just don't get the cropped jacket thing...

dexter73 · 13/01/2009 21:04

Don't tie a top round your waist to hide your bum - it just makes your bum look bigger!!

Dilettante · 13/01/2009 21:43

I always wear a normal plain bra underneath a crop top squish em flat and hold em close type sports bra (Sportjock for eg) and there is NO movement. Anything else just doesn't feel right.
