Are Mason Pearson hair brushes worth the money?

Just that, really! I have shoulder length, fairly thick hair. Is it worth spending £30+ on a hair brush? Also, my DD(10) has long fine hair which tangles very easily - will it make any difference to her hair?

Pirates as stated above they last decades of taken care of.** On a cost to use ratio it’s worked out cheaper than any of my cheap brushes and my hair is in better condition

bananafish81 · 11/11/2017 20:52

@Piratesandpants do cheaper hairbrushes last 20-30 years?

MsVestibule · 11/11/2017 20:53

Well, thanks for the advice, everybody! housewife thank you, I'll have a look at that website - if I'm going to buy such an expensive brush, a discount would be very welcome...

Damn, now I want one. I'm concerned about the static though, my hair is bad for that anyway. I have thin, fine hair and it gets static from acrylic or wool jumpers or cold weather. My body shop paddle brush is at the end of its life (though it was probably under a tenner and has lasted at least 8-10 years, can't remember exactly when I got it).

gamerpigeon · 11/11/2017 21:02

I have lots of thin fine hair and it’s not been worth the money for me. Just lives in the bedside drawer now 🙁

NameChangeFamousFolk · 11/11/2017 21:03

Worth every penny. My hair is very tangle prone, thick and so is DD1 - I can't abide cheap/rubbish hairbrushes. It detangles beautifully.

verystressedmum · 11/11/2017 21:08

Dds have thick hair and I have lots of finer hair which tangles terribly so I need this brush!
Off I went to have a google and bloody hell £90 for a hair brush ShockConfused
So I still want one which one is best for thick hair curly hair and fine tangly hair (need one that does the lot as not spending near 300 quid on effing hairbrushes)

sourpatchkid · 11/11/2017 21:14

I don’t understand why everyone has hairbrushes that are breaking? All of my cheap brushes last for years. Mum has one she used on me as a child, must be 35 years old and it’s just a basic cheapy.

Ticketybooboo · 11/11/2017 21:14

Mine is 30 years old and still used daily.

BikeRunSki · 11/11/2017 21:17

My mum has long, fine hair and has had the same bristle MP hairbrush for about 40 years,. When it gave up the ghost about 10 years ago, I replaced like with like for her.

madmomma · 11/11/2017 21:20

I bought one years ago, a large one, and I never use it to be honest. I prefer my cheaper brushes. I find it only grips the very top layer of my hair, so it takes ages to brush through all of it.

PaintingByNumbers · 11/11/2017 21:22

Sounds good, but my cheapy hairbrush must be twenty years or so old and still looks fine, so i'm not sure longevity is a good argument for mp

Piratesandpants · 11/11/2017 21:34

Sour - exactly, I’ve never had s problem with hairbrushes not lasting. Mine last years with my thick hair - and I don’t buy expensive ones Confused

Housewife2010 · 11/11/2017 21:45

Verystressedmum I'd recommend the mixed bristle - it works very well for my medium length thick.hair and my daughter's waist length fine and easily tangled hair.

HollyandBrambles · 11/11/2017 21:46

Something else that has gone onto the list in my phone of things to buy one day!

botemp · 11/11/2017 21:48

They're worth it if you get the right one for your hair (their website has a detailed explanation). In your case DD and you won't be able to share it. I bought mine (the full boar one) when I still had full textured hair and wasn't overly impressed, I should have gotten the mixed hairbrush instead. Now that I've lost quite a bit of hair due to a hormonal episode thanks PCOS and would classify it as fine, it's the magical promised brush. It smoothes my frizz prone hair to perfection, it even somehow adds a magical 50s style outwards swoop at the ends that no other brush ever does (it disappears overnight but nonetheless). I can put off going to the hairdresser for really long as I just don't get any split ends and it has really helped improve the health of my hair and scalp.

dantdmistedious · 11/11/2017 21:56

Mine is brilliant for my fine fly away hair. Can’t use anything else now.

northlondonlassie · 12/11/2017 00:15

Fabulous brushes and last for decades. I am using one that my mum bought me in about 1990 and it’s just about ripe for for replacement - feeling very excited to get a new one of my own choice next birthday.

FairfaxAikman · 12/11/2017 09:23

Anyone that scoffs at MP cost for “just a hairbrush” has never used one, and anyone who has ever used one wouldn’t go back.

TealStar · 13/11/2017 09:59

Botemp, I agree the bristle brush is brilliant for fine hair! And I wondered where my fifties-style swish had come from... Smile

TealStar · 13/11/2017 10:00

Piratesandpants, re the cost I’ve found the cheaper smaller ones are just fine for me. And I can fit them in my handbag.

TherealDeeBliss · 13/11/2017 10:19

I’ve tried a couple and never got on with them but the full bristle one is perfect for my long haired cat. I know not the intended use but her fur always looks beautiful!

Piratesandpants · 13/11/2017 10:58

Ok, i understand now that people are raving about them because they do amazing things to their hair AND they last for years. It seemed that people loved them because they didn’t break, i was incredulous because i’ve Never had a problem with hairbrushes not lasting, and I’m tough on mine.

Auburn2001 · 13/11/2017 11:17

I have fine hair and use a Kent natural bristle paddle brush. I used to have very static-y hair but have found that it disappears when I brush my hair then run my other hand down my hair afterwards.
Would love an MP brush as well Smile

Housewife2010 · 16/11/2017 05:33

There's 10-15% off at www.escentual.com at the moment. They stick a good range of MP brushes.
