Is shaving your arms a thing now?

In the last week I've noticed two women I know with perfectly hair free arms. Do people shave their arms now? I've never noticed this before and although I'm now trying to look at everybody's arms to see if this is common place I'm thwarted by the fact that everybody else has been wearing long sleeves. How long has this been going on? Am I committing a huge social faux pas with my hairy arms?
Where else do people shave now? I just whiz the razor over my lower legs (perhaps a full leg if I'm going on holiday), arm pits and a tidy up of the bikini line (tried the all off thing and it was itchy as hell!!!). I'll also do my big toes if they sprout a couple of hairs.
I have my tash waxed occasionally, when I'm getting my brows done but should I be getting the rest of my face done too?
I'm now really paranoid that I look like a yeti.

I have a jewellery blog and got mean comments about arm and knuckle hair - I now have ipl .

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 10/11/2017 16:02

my closest friends at high school 20 years ago were all of Asian descent, and all waxed their arms. I am lucky enough to have only very fine blonde arm hair - if only my chin and 'tache hair were the same!.

PumpkinPicking841 · 10/11/2017 16:07

When I was in school, some girls would shave their arms so I tried it then. I don't bother doing it now though. I never got stubble on my armsGrin

CountFosco · 10/11/2017 16:44

Do women get hairy arms? Having just inspected my own arms I can see a few tiny thin blond hairs if I look at them closely from the right angle. Nothing worth waxing. I might be particularly hair free Confused but I've also never noticed another woman's arm hair never mind be made to feel sick by it. Think the problem there is ChickenVindaloo's, not the person with coompletely normal and natural bodyhair (wonders if ChickenVindaloo makes her significant other shave all their body hair). Certainly wouldn't bother wasting time shaving arms when the vast majority of people won't notice, let alone care.

OP, to answer your question, I shave my legs about once a fortnight in the summer if it's warm enough for skirts. Despite swimming several times a week so exposing my hairy legs and armpits to my fellow swimmers all through the winter I have never had any negative comments. Most people don't care, or are polite enough not to make comments.

TwinklyGiraffe · 10/11/2017 16:49

I use my Lumea on my arms. They aren’t totally hair free!

Hairy arms aren’t something that I want to display on myself!

I've got pretty hairy arms (fair skin/dark hair) and have become conscious in the past few years that it's becoming a 'thing' to be expected to deal with them. I really can't be bothered and am trying to kid myself that no-one notices, but judging by a few of the nasty comments on this thread, they obviously do! Oh well, will just have to put up with people judging me Grin.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 10/11/2017 16:54

Epilator it’s a thing. Must do mine tonight!

blondiebonce · 10/11/2017 16:59

I know I shave my legs but wouldn't getting rid of so much body hair potentially effect our body's way of cooling down etc?

blondiebonce · 10/11/2017 17:00

PurpleBurtle · 10/11/2017 17:03

I don't think its 'a thing' just depends on how noticeable the hair is. I shave mine because I had very hairy arms and had a few horrible comments in high school. It doesn't grow back prickly a such though and not as fast as leg hair. It doesn't take very long either.

If I had very unnoticeable blond hairs like a lot of people I know I definitely wouldn't bother

Think Vindaloo has Chaetophobia

mummyhaschangedhername · 10/11/2017 17:59

Don’t think it’s an excepted social norm or anything close to it. I so shave mine, always have really, I am just fairly freaked out by hair. I haven’t really noticed anyone else doing it.

Margomyhero · 10/11/2017 18:10

I don't know anyone who shaves their arms. Or if they do I haven't noticed.

Mine are quite hairy but it's blonde so I don't care. I have never shaved my thighs either - just the lower leg.

However I accept that some have darker body hair than others and if they want to remove that hair then it's their personal choice. I wouldn't comment or judge either way.

chipsandpeas · 10/11/2017 18:11

i do my arms, have done since i was about 15 i didnt like the dark hair on my pale scottish skin

formerbabe · 10/11/2017 18:14

I shave my arms. It doesn't seem to grow back stubbly the way leg hair does.

I epilate my legs and tried to epilate my arms but it was way too painful!

OccasionalNachos · 10/11/2017 18:18

I am hugely paranoid now. I shaved my upper arms occasionally when I was a teenager but never my forearms. The hair is fair & soft but I am definitely paranoid that this is a thing everyone does & i’ve Missed the memo...

neveradullmoment99 · 10/11/2017 18:36

I have never. I never will. Its meant to be there.

SingingSeuss · 10/11/2017 18:45

I don't think it's a recent thing, a friend of mine did In High school...we did think she was a bit odd for doing it but her body her choice. I don't know anyone that does it now, but then all my mates have young kids so i suspect they have better things to do than be shaving arms. I certainly couldn't be arsed.

TheOtherGirl · 10/11/2017 20:31

I have my forearms waxed, despite being fair haired and not especially hairy. A friend got me into it a few years back, and I like how smooth and soft they feel.

I also have a regular full leg wax + Brazilian. I just like my skin feeling sleek and smooth [shrugs]

EnidButton · 11/11/2017 01:09

I never used to but I was always conscious of it so a year ago I started running a bikini trimmer over my arms once a week or so. Essentially shaving them I guess but not with a razor like my legs, more like a very very close trim.

I am very pale with dark hair (that Irish Celtic type colouring).
Aware it’s very silly but it’s easy enough and it makes me feel more comfortable in myself so no harm.

The exceptionally beautiful Liz Taylor had dark arm hair. (pics) As do many beautiful women in the public eye but I bet it’s airbrushed out now.

EnidButton · 11/11/2017 01:15

Occasional don’t worry, it’s not a thing. I bet the vast majority of women won’t have ever given it a thought. On threads like these, those of us daft enough to bother about it or those who just personally prefer their own arms to be smooth, are more likely to reply that’s all.

Ttbb · 11/11/2017 01:17

@ChickenVindaloo that's a bit mad. I really like hairy people. TBH obvious signs of hair removal (like those super short moustache hairs that women get between waxing) are more off putting to me than hair that's just been left to do it's thing. Once knew a man who shaved his chest-face stubble may be fashionable but sheer stubble is the opposite of sexy.
