So there.

EVERYBODY looked fantastic. EVERYBODY. DP and I just sat open-mouthed in fascination. Whatever their age, they looked amazing.

So I'm sitting here on a diet, wearing an Isabel Marant jumper and frantically googling 'How to turn French.'

As far as I can tell, the rules are:

  1. Be thin, despite the fact you are walking down the street at 11am gnawing a cheese and ham baguette the length of your forearm.
  1. Have your hair the colour and texture of natural hair.
  1. Have the most amazing skin, despite the fact you have a permanent Gauloise on the go.
  1. Never get pissed and lairy, despite the fact you are having a glass of red wine with your lunch and it's Tuesday.
  1. Wear shoes you can walk in.
  1. Have an amazing coat.
  1. Know how to tie a scarf so it looks like you have slung it on and it's just choosing to snuggle up to you because you are SO FRICKING GORGEOUS.
  1. Have a pharmacy on every corner that is just an Aladdin's Cave of miraculous skincare delights for less than a tenner each.

Anyone else have any tips? Joking aside, I loved the style - the shops, ohmigod the shops! It was like I'd walked into my internet shopping history.

I could actually walk around in my biker jacket without feeling like a twat.

I want to be French. Aidez-moi.

This thread inspired me to visit our local national trust property today wearing bright red lippy AND a black hat worn at a jaunty angle. Pretty sure most people there will have assumed I was a passing Parisienne. Effect slightly spoilt by my dcs insisting on calling me mummy, rather than maman! But DH met us there, and first thing he said was that I looked nice so was tres chuffed.

quirkychick · 19/11/2017 17:28

Proper that's a great video. I do really subscribe to the tint/highlight bits of your skin rather than cover it but I'm quite lucky in that my skin is quite good (despite getting on a bit). I'm quite pink-toned so would need to be careful of anything golden, but would avoid very pinky colours and use browny pink cream blush etc. I do prefer that attitude of making the most of what you look like rather than trying to change your look completely. Going for good glowing skin and shiny, healthy hair are always going to look good.

quirkychick · 19/11/2017 17:31

Proper Boots photograph your skin and give you a free colour match, which should tell you your skin tone.

botemp · 19/11/2017 17:34

What kind of coat are you looking for, Enid? I know you mentioned leopard print but I too struggle with that, it really suits some and really doesn't on others. I'm fine with it in alternative colours but not the traditional furry stuff. I don't know how much it's a Parisian thing, I've seen it there like anywhere else but it's something I really associate more with London and British style.

Just start giving them some Bonne Maman treats, Bella, and those enfants will be whining Maman soon enough Grin

I love all these MNers finding their mojos!

Vive la red lippy! 💋

quirky I am interested in finding out for clothes colour choosing rather than make up. I don't need to be matched with a foundation , if that makes sense?

EnidButton · 19/11/2017 17:55

bo I’ve gone off a leopard print one now. Might get a faux fur jacket but for a proper coat I was wanting a mainly wool one that has some shape to it, mid thigh length. Preferably something with a waist. I’ll know it when I see it.

quirkychick · 19/11/2017 17:57

Proper that makes complete sense. You could have your colours done, not cheap, but very helpful in guiding you towards choosing clothes that make you look great.

littleredlipstick · 19/11/2017 18:01

I had my colours done a few years ago best thing I have ever done!

Spudlet · 19/11/2017 18:02

I wore my red(ish) lipstick today and was called glam by my SiL Smile I must try and find a redder one that suits me when I have some money!

I do feel more put together with it on, I must say.

botemp · 19/11/2017 18:26

I’ll know it when I see it.

quirkychick · 19/11/2017 20:44

littleredlipstick I agree, it's super helpful, I had mine done about 5yrs ago. I am very cool-toned (once very dark now silvery hair, pale skin and blue eyes ie. celtic colouring) so anything yellowish is a no from me. So blue red lipsticks look great.

Auldspinster · 19/11/2017 21:36

I've looked out the infamous mumsnet scarf, not sure how Parisian it is!

quirkychick · 19/11/2017 21:41

Auld I still wear mine, but I think I do have a scarf problem: 2 drawers full, a shelf downstairs, scarves for every season. In fact, I had 2 mn scarves, a grey one which got too tatty and had to go, but I still have my purple one. It might depend what you wear it with whether it looks Parisian, it was a copy of a Louis Vuitton scarf, so certainly french.

EnidButton · 19/11/2017 22:33

Was The MN scarf a leopard print one? It was just before I joined I think. Zara have a leopard print one in at the moment that seems to be very popular on Instagram. Think I’m swaying more towards block colour ones right now. Although they tend to be huge. Took a big wine coloured wool one out today but it was just too flappy and got in the way so it stayed in the car. It’s really nice though, from &Other Stories. They have a few colours.

EnidButton · 19/11/2017 22:35

bo True. I keep seeing some that are almost right but not quite. Determined to get one this year so I better hurry up.

botemp · 19/11/2017 22:54

I was the same, in the end I found something I wasn't really looking for (a real shearling parka-esque coat from Maje, I normally look like some animal is trying to swallow me whole in your average parka) and it was black, the one colour I really didn't want. However, it fitted all my criteria of being warm, somewhat casual, having a hidden hood for emergency drizzles, would work well on a bike, and it had a really good fit. I only look slightly Jon Snow-esque meets ritch bitch with all the shearling going on but a relaxed knitted cable beanie I already owned from COS solved most of that. The coat was dirt cheap as it was from last year's collection, so I refused to dither and just bought it thinking I'd have plenty of money left over from the intended coat budget so I could easily buy one or two others but I'm actually really pleased with it, far more than expected.

It's allowing me to dither at leisure over a cookie monster fur coat from Weekday (looks a lot better than it sounds) and a furry sheep coat from &Other Stories instead. Both would never have met the original criteria and I'd probably have ended up with a really dull expensive coat I only sort of liked. I can take or leave the fun coats, will see what BF brings but may just hold out for the sales as I've still lost my heart to a camel Acne Studios coat but the price on that was insane.

MyNewHobbyIsGin · 20/11/2017 00:00

ProperLavs OMG her jumper! It is exactly what I'm looking for. Bet it costs ££££

MyNewHobbyIsGin · 20/11/2017 00:01

Also would love to know what my skin undertone is. I have no idea....

ProperLavs · 20/11/2017 06:35

in one of her vids she shows you what to do and then she gives an app to help. I will try those first. She has some great info and I love the way she talk. I also love the way she's not simply a pretty thing, she really seems to know what she's talk about.

quirkychick · 20/11/2017 07:09

Proper that first video is great, I do really like that idea of looking after your hair, skin, body so that you have good material to work with I'm just not interested in complicated routines Grin. I will check out some of her other stuff too. She explains it all so simply, who doesn't want shiny hair.

botemp you made me smile with your description of your coat. Quite a few years ago I bought a black, zara down-filled coat in the sale for similar reasons and had a light bulb moment, they are so warm! It was also very slim cut, so flattering not bulky. Sadly, the coat was not great quality, but I have since replaced it with a longer, charcoal grey version for cold days.

Enid the original mn scarf is leopard print, it was a cheap copy of the Louis Vuitton scarf. Mine is acrylic, so not super warm. Fine for mild days but not going to cut it in properly cold weather. I have some Becksondergaard ones in wool/silk that are fine woven that are much warmer, they have stars on so more scandi than french, though.

littleredlipstick · 20/11/2017 07:58

Quirky you sound just like me, I was placed under the summer palette and I love it. I feel more comfortable going to buy and wearing clothes now

Auldspinster · 20/11/2017 08:30

I have been mostly wearing my maroon lands end stadium squall parka which is the opposite of chic but great for freezing Edinburgh winters.

I do have a lovely dark green marks and spencer parka with a fake fur trim but it doesn't have a hood.

I think i'm a deep autumn with a hint of winter but can't be sure. Jewel colours suit me best and i look washed out and jaundiced in pastels.

TossDaily · 20/11/2017 08:45

I bought a longline Barbour quilted parka last week and I love it. Most quilted coats make me look like the Staypuft ghost, but this is slimline and is cut with a waistline.

It's beautifully warm and I love it.

My colour palette is a mix - my colour analysis was with an independent consultant and she never gave me a season as such. From what I have seen, it's mostly Autumn and Summer colours. What I found interesting was that I should be 'cool' with my blonde hair and pink cheeks but she found that gold actually looked much better on me than silver. In certain light, my hair has a slight red tint.

I've also cracked out the red lipstick thanks to this thread. My make up philosophy has been to keep it quite simple. I don't wear foundation but I'm lucky that my skin is quite good.
