Christmas Day outfits

I hope this isn't too early!

Has anyone started planning their Christmas Day outfit yet?

I'll be going to my very glamorous/trendy in laws (the whole extended family will be there and they are beautiful and always impeccably dressed!).

I'm hoping to have finally shifted my baby weight and the extra half a stone I already had. Would love to look fabulous! On a practical note, will be chasing around after my one year old, helping out in the kitchen, and MIL's house is always boiling.

Please inspire me!

That's ace, FridgeCut!

I want to find a dress like this Attico one, but that isn't £££. Sadly it seems that cheaper similar versions are just never quite right.

The concept of a planned Christmas Day outfit is new to me!

Christmas for me is just my parents, my brother and me. We eat in the dining room which opens up onto an uninsulated conservatory.

We dress up warm. Grin

I get so hot on Christmas day, what with menopause, the oven on for hours, lots of people and candles everywhere so I'm looking for some kind of long sleeveless tunic with a bit of sparkle, black slim fit trousers and shiny boots for (just for our stroll) I'll end up in socks at home.

I mean I'm only looking for the tunic, I have everything else. My make-up always slides off every time I open the oven too.

glovesonstrings · 31/10/2017 09:37

Depends whether you’re the one ‘doing’ Christmas doesn’t it?! My guests tend to come beautifully attired, but I’m Cinderella, and tend to have two minutes to brush my hair before getting back in the kitchen (sob) Grin

I'm going to be 38 weeks pregnant on Christmas Day, so still looking for the perfect tress that is both cute, festive and flattering. I usually love sequins at Christmas but don't want to run the risk of looking like a giant bauble.

Arealhumanbeing · 31/10/2017 12:50

Every year I buy myself a sequin mini skirt for christmas day.

Love this! I bet they look amazing all hanging in the wardrobe together. Or are they in a pile? 😊

christmasunicorn, as you're looking for seasonal t-shirt inspiration, the Boden Christmas Breton (£35) is nice.

SummerRoberts · 31/10/2017 13:36

@silkpyjamasallday Primark our this on their Instagram the other day... similar-ish to what you’re looking for and I can’t imagine it’ll be expensive.

For the last three years I have worn a fine knit dark grey sweater dress, black plaques and a massive sparkly necklace.

Flattering but forgiving post-lunch, not too hot and ok for chasing kids about.

Ballet flats at home, and wellies and giant coat for a walk.

But this year we’ll be in Oz so swimsuit and a white broderie anglaise sundress!

InvisibleKittenAttack · 31/10/2017 13:52

I was having this dilema earlier! I bought this dress earlier in the year when I still had a tan. In reality, it's a lot more pinky-red. I tried it on earlier today as I have a thing to go to on Friday, but I think I look a bit too pale for it now, and it's washing me out.

Real pity as it's perfect, has sleeves, thick material so will be warm enough without a cardie, but not as heavy as wearing a christmas jumper/knitted dress. Full skirt will hide any over indulgence belly.

GrumpyOldFucker · 31/10/2017 14:06

This gold dress - not sure about the shoes & tights though.

Wolves the year that I was PG, I had a pair of black maternity trousers (smart pair that I had used for work up until I left), a black ribbed poloneck from M&S (not actually maternity wear but I had about 4 so was prepared to sacrifice 1 to a mat wardrobe - but it stretched all the way up and yet kept it's shape, somehow!), a big chunky colourful necklace, and a long black swing cardigan (from a maternity brand, same as the trousers and a few other bits for work - but I don't think its still in existence) - open at the front but had a string to tie it sort of closed under the bust. I also had a black pashmina, as extra padding for outdoors (and had my maternity vest under it all). It meant I could take off some layers if I warmed up too much, but had enough layers (I hadn't bought a mat winter coat) for the outdoor parts of the day.

I did go home later in the evening to change into my (XXXL) Rugby jersey and yoga pants combo, as DD had decided it was time she wanted OUT. But I had made it from morning Church through the day to pleading exhaustion in my DGPs house at 11.30pm in that outfit - comfortable but neat and classical and nice. You could also brighten it up with a scarf or a coloured pashmina rather than all black (I tend to live in a lot of black though and I know it suits me).

A jumpsuit- not bought yet. But will be dark with a pattern (to disguise little hand prints!)

With heels for the pub so I feel 'dressed up' but then looks ok with slippers when we all get back to ours

SardinesAreSwimming · 31/10/2017 16:24

Grumpy that's stunning.

GrumpyOldFucker · 31/10/2017 18:10

Thanks @SardinesAreSwimming - we were ditched for Christmas at ours so quickly booked a hotel so it felt a bit more fun, so needed to dress up a bit more.

OpheIiaBaIIs · 31/10/2017 19:53

Don't ask me for advice. On Christmas Day I always go full Medieval Baebes complete with hair foliage and silly sleeves. I'm usually more 50s/vintage style so it's an excuse to indulge my inner wench.

And no, I'm not joking Grin

JMAngel1 · 31/10/2017 21:43

Silkpyjamas that dress is stunning - I always have a hankering for velvet at Xmas time - actually all year round if I think about it. Check out Asos - I got a navy velvet dress in a similar short style but instead of a wrap, it has a gorgeous low drape cowl neck. May wear it for the day itself now I'm thinking about it. I got it in Feb though but I remember there were loads of gorgeous drapery velvet pieces so worth checking it out.

Aureservoir · 31/10/2017 21:47

Please tell me this isn't serious. Do people really think about what to wear on Christmas Day? It's just another day. Surely.

Brighteyes27 · 31/10/2017 21:47

Yes we don’t go anywhere so it’s PJ’s and a dressing gown. It’s bliss.

mousemoose · 31/10/2017 21:55

aureseevoir depends where you are, with my in laws it’s a very casual day like any other but with more food, booze and presents, with my family it’s much more formal, church, drinks and nibblies, more formal lunch and so everyone gets dressed up. I never have time to plan it but I totally get why people do. Why is it weird to want to look nice and well turned out? It doesn’t make anyone superior not to give a fuck about their appearance.

hashtagelfie · 31/10/2017 22:12

* Do people really think about what to wear on Christmas Day?*

Same as you would thinking about a wedding guest outfit, party outfit, new job outfit, holiday outfit, Halloween outfit....... plenty of people plan outfits for occasions in advance all the time. Why should Christmas be any different?

princessbear80 · 31/10/2017 22:22

Thanks for all the outfit ideas. Not sure I'm ready to go medieval Grin but I love the sparkly mini idea!

Ha I love aureservoir coming on the s&b boards asking if people put that much thought into their clothes.

I'm going to head over the the cookery boards to ask why they give a shit about baking.
