NYC any recommendations to pack or things to do in general?

For Thanksgiving I don’t want to take too much or spend loads of money before I get there. I’m guessing most nights we will go out for dinner straight from the day walking about. I’m not sure how dressy up Thanksgiving dinner is? We are going to a place in Greenwich Village then plan to find a bar in the area.

It’s very exciting even though I’ve been before. I’m guessing there really is nothing worth bringing home the way the rate is?

Thanksgiving dinner is medium dressy, but it also depends on the restaurant. There was a thread recently on things to do in NYC. I'll see if I can find the link.

MissConductUS · 29/10/2017 01:10

Sorry, that thread seems to be gone. I'm a New Yorker if you have any questions I can help with.

Reppin · 29/10/2017 01:12

People in NY are not as into fashion as the UK, so anything goes for Thanksgiving. I think the only things worth buying here now are crest white strips and melatonin. Anyway, who wants to waste time shopping when there are bars, restaurants, rooftops, galleries etc.

MissConductUS · 29/10/2017 01:19

I would agree that anything goes it you're having Thanksgiving dinner at Shack Shack. If you're dining at Union Square Cafe you'll want to look a little nicer.

EachandEveryone · 29/10/2017 03:44

corneliastreetcafe.com we’ve booked there for no particular reason other than the area we thought we could go for a walk before hand and drink after. However if you recommend somewhere else I would change it. We are staying off Canal Street.

No shopping on Black Friday? What about Kate Spade?

ZaraW · 29/10/2017 07:01

Cornelia Street Cafe is pretty cool and laid back it will be fun. Cafe Wah is fun and has a great house band which is close by. Artichoke pizza on McDougal Street is cheap and amazing for a quick lunch.

EachandEveryone · 29/10/2017 08:13

Yes I’ve tried their pizza and the one on the corner. After that we went to Maria’s Crisis. You are so lucky to live there.

I wish I could predict the weather.

MissConductUS · 29/10/2017 10:10

The shops will all be open on Black Friday, Kate Spade included I'm sure.

MissConductUS · 29/10/2017 10:47

I've never been to the Cornelia Street Care, but the menu looks great. I'd give it a go.

As to the weather, you can check it here once you get within 10 days of your departure:

NYC 10 Day Forecast

I hope you have a great trip! Just bring up the thread again if you have more questions as you get closer.

EachandEveryone · 29/10/2017 18:01

Are the sales only on Black Friday or that week? If its going to be chaos ill avoid.

No, Black Friday is really just the start. I would certainly check out one of the Kate Spade shops that morning.

I need my Spanx tights! I usually go to century 21 for them does anyone actually pay full price for them?

Expect it to be significantly colder than you think! We went in November and it was minus 10 not counting the wind chill. Everyone was wearing balaclavas!

OlennasWimple · 29/10/2017 19:23

Some places will start their sales early online, as well - you can probably get things delivered to your hotel if you want to avoid shopping in person

MissConductUS · 29/10/2017 19:29

The other MN visiting NYC thread just showed up again. The OP is back and gave us a trip report:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3063646-To-think-Im-going-to-have-a-crap-time-by-myself-in-New-York

November and it was minus 10 not counting the wind chill

I think this is probably a bit of an exaggeration. -10 C would be 14 F. That was the NYC record low for the month of November set in 1955:

www.intellicast.com/Local/History.aspx?month=11

As you'll see at the link above, the average high temperature for NYC in November is 52 F (11.1 C). Nights will be chilly, but not arctic by any means.

Black Friday is just the start to the whole cycle of discounting for Xmas. The department stores can be a bit busy but the nicer shops should be fine.

Please let me know how else I can help. As you'll see on the other thread, I seem to be becoming the NYC ambassador to MN. Smile

Nakedavenger74 · 30/10/2017 05:36

Okay it was probably a massive exaggeration! It was stonkingly cold though. It was before the days of t'internet and we had pitched up in clothes suitable for a mild London November; a hoody with a raincoat over the top. We had to panic buy fleeces, gloves and hats at a street stall on Wall Street. The Staten Island Ferry was a lesson in resilience! The only photos we have are me and my friend with scarves wrapped round our heads!

We were in our early twenties and we were vaguely on the pull in NY that time. I remember saying its was pointless because you could barely make eye contact with people in the street due to the balaclavas and people hunched over against the wind and sleet!

EachandEveryone · 30/10/2017 10:05

We were wearing tshirts at Halloween two years ago. I think its really variable.

Any ideas on shoes to take?

Comfortable flats for eating out, joggers for walking around and sightseeing. They'll go fine with a nice pair of blue jeans.

lynmilne65 · 30/10/2017 12:53

I want to come ☹️

Well come on then, start planning your holiday in NYC! If you can't come for Xmas, come in the spring. NY is gorgeous in May and June.

KungFuEric · 30/10/2017 13:35

Can I jump on the thread to ask what to expect from NY at the very end of January/early February?

Cold, windy, with a good probability of snow. But lovely!

Floisme · 30/10/2017 14:18

I've been mid January. Never known cold like it - if you left an inch of skin exposed, it froze. That was daytime, most evenings we couldn't face going out (and I was still young at the time). But beautiful too: clear, sunny days, great views, didn't queue for anything. The snow was magical too and, unlike the UK, everything kept going - until we got to the airport!

EachandEveryone · 30/10/2017 17:45

They never showed you that in Sex and the City did they? Smile

OP posts:
MissConductUS · 30/10/2017 17:52

There's a lot they didn't show in Sex and the City! The blood flat those women had was HUGE by NYC standards.

Because we're used to hard winters and equipped to deal with heavy snowfalls NYC doesn't slow down much in the winter. Most people get around on the underground anyway.
