How to sort my dry lips out? Lip balm doesn't work (pics)

I use lip balm everyday without fail, I’ve tried burts bees, Nivea, Vaseline - among others. I put it on before bed and during the day yet I still have dry patches on my lips. My bottom lip is the worst and actually looks bitty when I apply lipstick. Plus lipstick clings to the dry bits and slides off the other parts of my lips within 30 minutes.
I’ve even tried lip balm under lipstick but still no joy.

What can I do? Is there a magic cream I can use? Fed up with trying to look nice and ending up like a patchy mess within 30 minutes!

Photos aren’t very good but hopefully gives you the idea.

I've just got some paw paw balm which has helped mine, I got this one www.purepawpaw.uk.com

Blistex overnight is the only thing that works for me when my lips are really flaky. The cream that smells of camphor ( is it camphor?) Rather than the stupid ineffective lipbalm stuff. And yes, check your toothpaste. The foamy types can be a bastard.

SlipperyLizard · 25/10/2017 20:28

Like Tatty, hydrocortisone is occasionally needed to sort my lips out.

Just don't tell the pharmacist that's what it is for if they ask!

vaz119 · 25/10/2017 20:38

Another vote for lansinoh! Miracle Worker. Certain toothpaste does this to me too. A close second favourite for really scabby lips is Bepanthan baby cream!

64BooLane · 25/10/2017 20:39

It looks to me from your photos like you might be reacting to something dietary. I had a period of bad dairy sensitivity long ago, and that’s the way my lips always looked during that time before I worked out the cause - they’d even crack when I smiled, it was horrendous. Lip balm did nothing and some types seemed to make it worse. Lots are fragranced (Nuxe is) and that doesn’t necessarily suit your needs right now.

Whatever the cause, I’m in the Lansinoh camp as a remedy. Simple, no weird additives.

I get dry lips when I am anaemic
Have some iron ?

Elend · 25/10/2017 20:46

Blistex makes my lips worse and really sore but I think I'm just odd. I gently rub my lips with a warm facecloth when I'm washing my face every morning and night. Clarins lip oil is also really lovely and helps my lips lots. You can get a wee set with it, 2 tinted glosses, and a mini lippie for like £20 atm in boots afaik. Be warned you will get addicted though!

ViSovari · 25/10/2017 21:02

Yellow soft paraffin is my go to! You can buy it online at medical stores.
I was given a tube after a stay in hospital about 8 years ago and have only ever used that since. Rub it in as needed and it should shift stubborn sore lips.
It's like Vaseline but actually helps moisturise and isn't just a barrier.
Also cheap and unfrangranced with no added colour.

Teaformeplease · 25/10/2017 21:05

Leave the lip salves, they dry your lips out. Lansinoh worked a treat for me.

FluffyFerrets · 25/10/2017 21:07

OP do you work/spend a lot of time in air conditioned places?
I do and it has an awful effect on my lips.
I use a face brush on my lips a couple of times a week.
Another yes for blistex. I also find coconut oil works great too.

mintmagnummm · 25/10/2017 21:48

Blistex makes my lips sore and and even worse! At the moment I'm using lanolips original

bluebells1 · 25/10/2017 21:55

Coconut Oil when you go to bed. Slightly fatty diet for a week- Avocadoes, fatty fish, olive oil. That should sort this out.

bluebells1 · 25/10/2017 21:56

Oh and my DH gets this when his VItamin B levels drop. Could be some deficiency as well.

Jojobythesea · 25/10/2017 22:00

Carmex in a pot like this from Superdrug/Boots is the BEST. Not the tube version though as it’s just not as good. Grin

Aquaphor is worth a try.

Dontletthewitchesgrindyoudown · 25/10/2017 22:07

Op I used to have really chapped lips. I always assumed I was de-hydrated. I lived abroad and they've been perfect ever since. So it was the cold. Not de-hydration.

Can you move abroad? Wink

Dontletthewitchesgrindyoudown · 25/10/2017 22:08

*moved abroad

itusedtobeverydifferent · 25/10/2017 22:10

I get awful chapped and cracked lips, I find carmex works a treat.

cinnamonwoman · 25/10/2017 23:22

Are you anaemic?
This happens when I am anaemic. No beauty product can help it except iron tablets (proper prescription ones)

CatastropheKate · 25/10/2017 23:28

Clinique superbalm fixed mine (green tube, about £15 but worth it). And their chubby sticks are very kind to lips if you have to wear something.

I apply Bodyshop cocoa butter lipsalve at bedtime every couple of days for prevention, but the buggers appear to have discontinued it.

Vaseline 'burns' me, horrible stuff.

CatastropheKate · 25/10/2017 23:31

Actually, looking at your photo's again, is the redness all caused by dryness, or is some of it lipstick stain? Do you always wear lip colour?

wiltingfast · 25/10/2017 23:33

Get a lip scrub to get dry bits off

Moisturize with something

Repeat weekly

Job done

(Ps you can make a lip scrub with sugar and olive oil and flavor of your choice. )

BertyFlanter · 26/10/2017 00:04

Another one for lanisoh here. Or any other 100% medical grade lanolin, will work so quickly and what’s left over does wonders too for dry feet, knees elbows. Goes a bloody long way too

ContessaBonessa · 26/10/2017 01:41

Try an SLS free toothpaste like Senosdyne.

Pyjamasdontfit · 26/10/2017 04:34

I do actually only use sensodyne due to sensitive teeth so I’m ok on that front.
No I don’t always wear lipstick, esp at weekends I just lip balm. Although last 2 weeks I’ve hardly worn lipstick or gloss at all as I’ve been off work yet the one day I put it on that was what happened (on the pics)

I’ve ordered blistex & lanoslin (sorry can’t remember the name!) the nipple cream so I’m hoping they do the trick. Don’t want to be a flaky mess anymore!
